Title: Weird stat
Post by: CTWarrior on January 07, 2024, 03:40:36 AM
I was at the game, among some MU fans, and we were discussing at the under 4 minute TV timeout that it seemed like if we didn't turn them over, they scored every time.  So I just looked at the game log, and that is exactly what happened.  Until the last missed free throw (with no SHU players contesting the rebound and the rebound for some reason is not listed in the game log), our last defensive rebound was a Kolek rebound off of a Joplin block with 12:15 left in the game.  Basically, if SHU managed to get a shot up on the rim, they scored every time for the last 12 minutes of the game.

Dr. B nailed it. We just weren't tough enough. And the last time we forced a miss and got the rebound (no block involved) was at the 15:14 mark. Defense wasn't good enough, rebounding wasn't good enough, and we basically ceded the glass to their entire team, not just Bediako (who came in as one of the best offensive rebounders in the country but was just okay yesterday). Goes to show our short-lived #1 ranking in defensive rebounding in Big East play did indeed seem to be just small sample size.

How about the fact that Oso had zero fouls?  The bottom line is a mediocre at best offensive team pretty much shredded us when they didn't kick the ball away.  Now one guy had a career high and hit a few uncharacteristic shots.  That said Richmond just put his head down and scored when they needed buckets.  He out muscled our perimeter defenders and the help was late.

Offensively, we scored 30+ off turns in transition and took 10  more FGA's.  You shouldn't lose games with that stat line.  So, how did we do it?  Our half-court offense was pretty much anemic when it mattered.  We had bad possessions, a lot of iso ball, missed chippers, and our heralded tandem in the backcourt went 6-21 with a grand total of one field goal in the 2H.  That's not gonna get it done against anyone in our league minus DePaul or Georgetown.  We really didn't dictate anything in our h-c sets and had no flow whatsoever.

I thought the offense generated a lot of good looks. There is just a lack of consistency with regards to outside shooting.

This seems to happen to Marquette quite often.

Sean Jones did that the game before last. I guarantee you that Creighton wasn't thinking it would lose because Sean Jones got hot from 3 and scored 15.
