Title: Sleepy Shaka
Post by: DoctorV on January 06, 2024, 01:13:07 PM
You can be a future hall of fame coach, but today you were asleep at the wheel.

Everyone gets a mulligan.

Let's continue that home win streak, please.

Nah, you start.

Sean came in about 2 minutes too late at the end. Not a coincidence that he came in and SHU guards immediately got rattled and we ripped off a 7-0.

He was our best player today. I know he had four fouls but they needed him out there to have a shot.

Love Shaka. Wouldn't trade him for anyone. But he didn't have a great day today.

Neither did Kam or Tyler. It happens.

Calling the TO at the end. Didnt like it. Should have let them play. A set play with that much time is tough. I think they'd get a better look coming from a trailer

Kam was alone trailing right behind Kolek. He's been shooting awful but I would still take that look all day.

Kolek was dribbling toward the corner with his head down and no help.   Call the TO.

Kam would have at least got off a Caitlin Clark type final shot, which is a heck of a lot better than struggling to even inbound the ball.

Any suggestion that Shaka's MU teams are not good on inbounds plays is pretty strong evidence of not knowing the game.

re: Sean: Shaka was very aggressive with his PT after the fourth foul. Not really sure how you could complain about that.

To be clear, I didn't assert they aren't good at inbounds. I said that I thought playing free was a better option than an out of bounds play in my opinion

Not necessarily complaining. I understand why he wasn't out there. But they played him around the ten minute mark. Immediately want on a run. Sat for about 5 mins and came back in down. Immediately went on a run.

I think the play there was to keep him in and if he fouls out he fouls out. Because it was clear watching that they'd lose without him.

Shaka basically fouled him out himself by benching him.

Reserve guard picks up 4th foul.  Sits.  Clearly Shaka's fault going with starters.

He already had the 4th foul. He was a difference maker late in the game and sat at a terrible time.

If you go offense/defense on subs I'm fine with it, but to sit him for 3/4 mins at that time is brutal.

He came back in and was an instant spark again when Marquette was about to lose by double digits.

Anyway, I don't want to comment on the shortcomings today because I'm heated in the moment and don't want to over-react, but the mistakes were there and I'll comment on them tomorrow.

Down three with 6.5 seconds left.
I can understand Shaka wanting his starters on the floor.  But now you only have 3 of 5 players with decent three pt shooting ability.  Having Oso and Stevie on the floor cut down options.  I would have had Sean and Ben.  Now you have 5 options.  Would rather have those odds.

Yea having Sean and Ben sitting in that moment was absurd on its own.

I moreso meant taking him out for a large stretch before that but that alone was pretty bad

Eh. Shaka did fine. Lots of Monday morning quarterbacking here. They missed a lot of open shots.

And?  Does every last minute play work?  Every bespoke in bounds play?    They got the in-bounds to the third option, the best passing big man in the country.   He and Joplin weren't on the same page.
Because the execution was off does not mean it wasn't a sound concept.   It could have been run perfectly and the shot missed.

Think it's a bad decision to call timeout down 3 with the ball with that little time. Good chance the defense won't have the IQ to foul on the fly. The inbounds play was a long shot. Oso rushed the pass because he would have been fouled immediately anyway. Joplin likely doesn't even get a shot off if the pass succeeded. Doomed from the start.

It's definitely a coaching preference but I personally don't like calling a TO in that situation.

The helter skelter nature heavily favors the offense and it's a situation where you can practice a ton and perfect. Call a timeout and the advantage swings back towards even, rather than favoring the team with the ball.

100% why it frustrated me that they did.

If the timeout is awarded in front of the bench which is where ball handlers are instructed to bring it before a TO, that inbound spot is really, really difficult to get anything going in a short amount of time. You can really only safely inbound the ball to the top of the key or backcourt (not enough time to go back that far).
