I will be attending my first game at the Kohl Hole tomorrow, decked out in gold. Given that they don't sell beer at the stadium, I'll need some spots before and after to load up on suds. What are the spots? Preferably somewhere I'm unlikely to get into a bar fight with Badger fans...
Wandos pregame if there is still room. Go to Nitty Gritty after and fight
We will be Nitty Gritty. I do believe they sell beer at the KC, beginning this year.

Will Wando's serve walk-ins and strays that aren't in the package deal? I'm going to just have time for 1 or 2 before the game...

They've secured 5 bars in Greater Chicago for every game...that ain't nothing.
Love seeing Goolsby's on the list.

Commonwealth didn't even put up their Marquette flag until we beat Kansas (the "main" fanbase they cater to IS Kansas, along with ND and the Dallas Cowboys). Levitt Inn is owned by Marquette alums and will have the game on as well--plus their food is actually good. I called them and they'll be open at 11a and have the game and sound.
Except for the proximity to the Kohl Center.....Wandos sucks.

This year, they finally do! Beer is available at specially designated stands.
Beer is not available at general concession stands.
I just looked it up...beer, wine, and hard seltzer. $9.48 for a pint of domestic light beer

Madison is an incredible city. We love doing a weekend in Madison, Capitol Square dining scence is great. Really the only thing I hate about UW are the Walmart Wisconsin fans. The rest is a huge asset to our state. And right now they have finally found the perfect basketball coach who should be extended to 2050.

Vadgers aside...and crazy rush hour traffic on the beltline, Madison is solid. (will not admit this in public, however)
MECCA?

A lot of the bars on Regent closer to Camp Randall have shuttles (red zone, Jordan's or Sconnie). You can go there before and get a free ride, it's not a super far walk after too, if you don't want the shuttle.

Those are all the hicks that grew up in Wisconsin and either went to UW-Platteville, UW-Oshkosh, etc., went to a tech or trade school, or skipped college altogether and walk around with their Walmart Bagders sweatshirts acting like they attended the Harvard of the Midwest.

go to any Menards and you'll easily spot a two-fisted slobber in a '92 Rose Bowl salsa stained sweatshirt, aka Walmart Badger
Many times my "UW-" friends have said they went to the "University of Wisconsin" leaving out the hyphen and any city name that follows...

If they are the greeter, beware the Wisconsin Handshake or if they direct you to the Nut Department.

Respectfully, you need to get around more.
Spent about a week's worth of time there this year and I think the other poster's characterization of 'solid' is right on.
We have two kids attending UW-Madison, so visit regularly. Fun city. Terrace off the Union is very chill... that is, when a pier isn't otherwise falling into the water.
My boys changed our plans and we will now be at Wando's. Should be there nice and early.

To be fair, when you have only one FBS public university in the state, it's going to draw a wide number of fans outside the alumni base.

I don't mind that but to have a UW Oshkosh grad so passionately hate us is just weird. MU (like UW) does a lot of good for this state.
Also, this is way too big of a state for only one D1 football team (Barry has used that and the walk on program to his advantage).

Barry hasn't been the head coach for a long time. And who else should have a D1 football team?
Nice early crowd at Wando's.

Great question. When you look at the situation from 50,000 ft. up, it seems like Wisconsin should have more. States like Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Nevada, Iowa etc. all support multiple D1 teams. Two items that stick out to me is 1) while the mid-west likes football, they don't hold a candle to the south and 2) Wisconsin residents have such a deep love and derive some self worth from UW-Madison that even the thought of diverting any resources from Madison would be rejected. Reminds me exactly of Nebraska.

Every school has good, bad, indifferent fans. Every school has fans that didn't attend the school. This is in no way unique to the University of Wisconsin. This is all across the country.

The answer is obvious
I would rebrand UW LaCrosse as Wisconsin State University and move them to D1.

It's actually just because there was never a flagship institution in the Wisconsin State System, and when that System merged with UW in the early 1970s, there was no chance.
