The first is CBS'S Sportsline,
Marquette drops from 10 down to 19
Wisconsin goes from 12 up to 8.
Good. I didn't want to be so high up anyway. Still being ranked is good, and being lower so that the target on our back isn't quite as big is good in my opinion too.
ESPN goes from 9 to 20???? Wow!
Now we'll actually have to earn a top 10 ranking!
I totally agree with the target on the back theory. That game NDSU played against us is probably the biggest game of the year for them, they were probably incredibly pumped up for the game and ready to go out and get us. There's definitely a different way other teams look at you when you're ranked in the top 10.
This could be a good loss(if there is such a thing) in that it brings us back down to earth. Watching this team play, and play pretty poorly in certain games against weak opponents, I never really thought they were the 8th best team in the country. It will be interesting to see how this team takes this loss. I think they'll take care of business against Delware St. and they'll be ready for Wisconsin with a chip on their shoulder. Who cares about their ranking...they're still in the top 25 and they're getting good national attention. With a win against Wisc on Sat. all will be well.
i agree that we were not the 8th best team in the country, however there are some flaws with the ranking system. I mean teams like Maryland and Gonzaga are ranked too low and teams like Witchita State and Kansas are ranked too high. Gonzaga is playing like a top ten and they get bonged down low for a loss to UNC. Kansas loses to two unranked teams and they stay 12/13.
these rankings shouldn't even come out till december. They create too much hype out of games that nobody can predict the outcome. No one knows how these teams will perform early in the year. i hate that we dropped so much, but i like the spot we are at right now. Plus it lets us be the underdog next saturday which is nice.
look at Florida... they lose to an unranked team and move down two spots, its all about the name of the school right now
exactly, the polls will take their real shape once we go into conference play. thats where we'll see who really stacks up where.
Yup, the polls are just fun for fans at this point.
Even so, here's a link to all of them :) 17 in AP, 20 in ESPN/Coaches, 19 in "Parrish's" CBS Sportsline

TWO LOSSES for Florida!
FOUR LOSSES for Georgetown and they still get votes!
Maryland loses to ND and drops 4?
No love. O well, I'll get over it when we crush Delaware St and Madison
17/20 feel a lot more right for this team than 8/9. The big thing is to stay in ESPN's top 25 so you get a little national attention. Hopefully DJ stays because this team is one year away from reaching it's full potential and should be very good in two years even if DJ leaves, assuming Wes and McNeal hang around.
I think we should be around 13-15 and I think that's a fair ranking for us. When we beat Wisconsin this weekend, I think we'll move back up there and then bounce between 10 & 20 for the rest of the year. Obviously I hope at the end of the season we're closer to 10 than 20. ;D
Ditto.
#14/15 is about where we rank.
It's better for us to play the hunters than the hunted.
While we're at it, worth mentioning that Marquette Women's hoops cracked the top 25 at #24 in the AP poll today.

go women!!!
Does anyone on here go to any of the women's games? If so, any comments on the team?
I haven't made it to any games yet this year (damn law school) but (being in the band) over the past 4 years I made it to most home games. The team is fun to watch. Lots of good competition. I'm not sure if it was last year or the year before that we almost knocked off #2 ND at the Al. One of my favorite MU band memories was going to Duke for the NCAA's my Soph year. We beat a very good Old Dominion team in the first round and then lost to Duke by a couple. I don't think it's exactly fair that the NCAA has the top seed as the home team in the first and second rounds... We could have had them.

Maryland loses to ND and drops 4?
I was at that game. ND couldn't miss from 3-pt land. We've really got to get out on them or they'll do the same to us. Maryland was one of the most athletic teams, but seemed to be offended that smaller, slower white guys from ND were beating them. If MD gets mentally tough, they could be final four team.
