A UNC-Chapel Hill faculty member was killed and a suspect was taken into custody after a shooting prompted a three-hour lockdown Monday and rattled a campus one week into the new school year.
The faculty member's name was not being released pending notification of family, university leaders said during a news conference Monday evening.
Tailei Qi, 34, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and possessing a firearm on educational property. Police said it was too early to know a possible motive.
Many of us have kids in college, or family and friends with college kids. It's a little unsettling to be reminded how vulnerable they are on large campuses that can't possibly be protected.

This is life in general though. How do you know that the intersection your driving through won't have a drunk driver t-bone you after blowing through a red light.
You could be walking down the street and a guy who just had a mental meltdown stabs you.
Our basic way of life only works because we follow society's rules. It comes crashing down when we cross paths with someone who has decided in that moment to not follow society.
