Sobelman's at Marquette will close its doors permanently at the end of the semester, the university has confirmed.
I've heard the Bro Yo may be closing as well (owner is near retirement age).
MU has to have the worst bar & restaurant situation of any major University. We need a lot but one thing I have always thought we needed was a Dotty Dumpling's Dowry type spot. A place where visiting parent would go, etc. The Annex has the atmosphere, it's well appointed but the food / service is atrocious.

Hey, mister. The purpose of Marquette is to educate our young people. In spelling, for example. (miscalcution) All of those off campus shenanigans are not contributing to their edutcation. Perhaps now, MU can build a proper wall and isolate itself from the rest of the dystopian cesspool that is Milwaukee. Nobody here ever did a single productive thing off campus.

Sorry I misspelled miscalculation. I'm a COMM major, that's barely a degree. Cut me some slack.
We need more bars on campus. That's a fact. It has nothing to do with building a wall around MU (I'm pretty pro downtown / city of Milwaukee). I just think that encouraging kids to travel to drink when they are 18-22 is a bad idea.
Also MU Sobelmann's was terrible. Dave has not had the best luck expanding, his Mequon location (franchise?) went under as well.
Exactly. Let the kids walk home after drinking.

I have too. It would be a real shame if we lost those two establishments.
I know the downtown crime bit is a thing we have fun with on here, but kids are largely safer drinking at campus bars than Water on weekends.
I've never understood the thought process behind MU having kids go off campus to bars. It seems they could do a better job protecting the students closer to campus. At least when I was there, the LIMOs didn't go past 6th, so people would take them as far as the could and just walk. Maybe Uber makes it a little easier now.

I think the thought process is simple - Marquette likely doesn't want to be in a situation where it leases land or buildings to bars or to restaurants where students drink excessively. And I think a lot of people would argue that having such establishments closer to campus does not "do a better job protecting students."
Not a very big loss, IMO.

Whatever happened to the rumor that the vacant lot where Marquette Gyros used to be was going to be turned into a beer garden for Sobelman's?
The number of non-chain places on campus where you can sit down and have a meal is dwindling. Renovate or replace the building, add the beer garden and put an Oscar's there. It's better anyway.

Agree, Goose, Sobleman's is no bueno. Admittedly there is a soft spot in my heart (blood vessels) for Angelo's. It would be nice to have a place like https://www.shopsatpenn.com/franklins-table but I'm not sure there is enough action near MU when school is out. Maybe MU could do like a Jazz in the Park sitch on the Union green, or maybe the new soccer stadium and live music venue will lead to more bars/restaurants around MU.
On campus type restaurants are a seasonal business. Couple that with Marquette being a terrible land lord and you have the situation campus is at now with minimal. traditional college haunts.
Places likes Dotties in Madison do a fair amount of business from non University people and/or people who are going to Kohl Center events. Marquette area places really don't benefit from that kind of traffic.

I think this happens to a lot of "branch" locations of iconic bars/restaurants. It's really tough to live up to the original. It also happens when a restaurant moves from its original location - maybe the staff and food is exactly the same, but changing the ambiance can totally tank an institution.
I also don't think MU's campus area is a particularly great place to run a successful business. I worked for a coffee company during college that opened an MU location, and they left within 2 years. Other locations were doing great, but students don't spend like we think they might. It's probably amplified by MU's 2-year dorm rule, too, particularly now as dorms are getting nicer. It's a comfortable bubble. From a bars/nightlife perspective, I'm sure the existence of Uber has changed the game. The walkable bar isn't so important anymore.

Walking through Marquette's campus feels dead. I know it is apples and oranges, but walking through UW's campus feels much more alive. There are a ton of businesses up and down several streets around campus. Now, of course, there are four times as many students at UW, but a large part of me thinks that Marquette has intentionally not encouraged businesses to move into the area.

My guess is that Marquette serves food at much different hours then when most of us were in school. If we wanted a late night bite, we had to go out to get a pizza or to Wales on Wells or something similar, but now Marquette probably offers all of that in-house.
I also think you are right that students don't spend like you think they do. If you walk around UW to those places around there, it's not just students, but faculty, staff, community members, etc. I think we are blaming Marquette for something that is likely not much their fault.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. If Madison had to rely solely on students and faculty to support the surrounding businesses, it wouldn't be nearly as hopping. It would be more like State College or Champaign. In Madison, there are a ton of nearby non-student residents with disposable income who live and work in the general area of campus, so the businesses see a good mix of customers year round. That's not the case at MU, nor will it likely ever be. The hospital and courthouse
kind of being in the neighborhood aren't enough - you need 22-30 year olds who actually live nearby for more bars and restaurants to open up. I don't think MU is necessarily discouraging businesses, it's just that the economics don't make sense for most.
Anybody remember Rick's? Tiny joint next to the old Gym Bar on Wells...across from Amigo's. Had several late night meals there after over-imbibing.
And to whoever is going to make a dumb Ricky's on State reference I'm not talking about the jiggle joint.
Besides Real Chili I remember Giuliano's (favorite late night visit for 2 slices and a drink for $2 50), Angelo's, Amigos (first beer on campus before my first night in McCormick), Wales on Wells, Marquette Gyros. I don't recall anything else foodwise in the immediate neighborhood?

I remember a greasy spoon on the corner of 13th and West Wisconsin, but that was almost 60 years ago so I could be wrong.
Today the MU campus is beautiful, but has now become an area in the City. When I was there you would be hard pressed to know where the MU campus began and ended as there were so many mom and pop stores right on West Wisconsin: Real Chill was just down from the Varsity and on either side there was a barber shop and a music store. I'm convinced MU peaked in the mid to late 80's.
- You could see 77 pretty clearly in the rearview mirror
- All the north / south streets were closed through academic parts of campus
- Most if not all of the classic haunts were there and thriving
- The Block Party was still a thing
- Mugrack > The Pub
FTR, I graduated in 1997 so this is not a "things were better in my day". I know my place in history; the Lanche closed and the Warrior died. It was a sad time.
I went in the mid to late 80s. Definitely not the peak.
Honestly it's a pretty great place now. No idea why people are so down in it.
Like most of us, I loved Marquette when I was there.
Arrived just 1+ year after the natty and we were still considered an "independent power," Sam Worthen was our guy and hopes were strong for the future; drinking age was 18; students actually were encouraged by the university to hold floor parties at the dorm (especially McCormick my freshman year); the rec center was still relatively new; Varsity usually had good stuff going on; bands at the Mug Rack; had a bazillion bars on campus or damn close to it, and all of them had amazing weeknight specials; Wales on Wells and Angelo's and Real Chili and a few others were joints worth noshing at.
Food at the dorms blew, there was no such thing as craft beer, and far too many kids smoked cigs, but we didn't know any better!
Having said all that ... every time I've returned the last few years, I've been amazed and proud at how appealing Marquette's campus has become.

MU has done an outstanding job with academic campus...but the lack of classic spots around the area makes me nostagic for a Wells Street packed with options. I loved being able to walk into a MU bar and chat up a neighborhood character.
84-88 Ups: Bars. So many bars. Girls. So many that I chatted up. Block party. Jiggles-fest. Wells St and State St atmosphere. WMUR. MUTV. Friday afternoon concerts. Professors that inspired.
Downs: Milwaukee PD stalking jay walkers. Girl murdered in front of the florist across from Mashuda. Sexual assault of a girl who lived in an apartment on the first floor of the apartment I stayed in my senior year. 2 weeks before I moved in. Majerus to Dukiet. Dahmer. Kid dying out in front of the Avalanche. Avalanche being held up. The poor girl who fell and hit her head while holding onto the back bumper of a car in the snow. Breaking up an armed mugging in the entry to the Mashuda parking lot. Young and dumb and charged the gun.
When I go back now, it seems cleaner, more sanitized than I remember. More chains, less character.
Grebe's Delicatessan, open 24/7. Never closed. Northwest corner 12th & Wisconsin. No seating. Shared a common entry with the University Store. Reeked of salami and cheese. Grab a homemade sandwich and a Cream soda to go, anytime of the day or night. Buy a Sunday Journal from an old guy in the front doorway at 4:30 am after a night of carousing.
We didn't know how good we had it.

I remember all those places in the late 60's. The music store had guitar in the window for $29.99. I went to the laundromat weekly when I had an efficiency apartment in an early 1900's building on N.15th St. The building had a huge compressor in the basement that cooled the tiny built-in fridges, and pass-through little doors for compartments in the hallway for milk and bread deliveries. Boston and one other department store (cannot remember the name) were downtown.
Had Real Chili often. Dickthedribbler mentioned Grebe's with their take-out sandwiches. They also had donuts and other bakery items.
Grandmora was a former circa 1890's-1900 apartment building that was used for faculty offices. I remember the "rolling" floors that had buckled noticeably.
Grebe's was great for a quick, ok-priced lunch located not far from Straz Hall.
Marquette Gyros was amazing. Something about the cherry coke after 19 beers hit just right.
Drunk Window at Louie D's was a great idea. Quick cheeseburger & fries.
I puked in a cup while standing at a table at Pizza Joe's. I was 18. Sorry.
Living at Campus Town, went to DQ for the chicken strip basket an insane amount of times.

- The Block Party was still a thing

FTR, I graduated in 1997 so this is not a "things were better in my day". I know my place in history; the Lanche closed and the Warrior died. It was a sad time.
This is the first time I've heard someone argue that Marquette peaked during the reign of Dukiet

I remember a greasy spoon on the corner of 13th and West Wisconsin, but that was almost 60 years ago so I could be wrong.
You're not wrong. It was called "Milt's" until 1968, "Dal's" thereafter. Hamburgers were 25c, you got 5 for $1 "to go".Food was awful at Schroeder, so it wasn't hard to find 4 guys every night who would want a late night snack - so mine would be free. It also had a good bacon and eggs alternative to Real Chili for dining after closing time at the bars.
Any y'all lose your virginity in the walkways under Wisconsin Ave., hey?

I'm convinced MU peaked in the mid to late 80's.

It just as cool today, just different.
The Biltmore Hotel on the south side of Wisconsin Avenue at 13th Street. Was taken down in 1980-81 or thereabouts I believe. Don't recall if it was all student rentals by then or a mix of students and elderly neighborhood residents. Place had to be almost 100 years old at the time and would have soon fallen down had they not taken it down. All wood construction-----was a total fire trap.
While Shroeder may not have been a fire trap, The "Great Shroeder Hall Fire" occurred in my freshman year during winter late at night. Many of us thought it was another fire drill until we smelled the smoke in the stairways. I saw the flames on the third floor and firemen fighting the blaze. It took out three rooms before it was put out.
I knew a guy whose room it was where the fire started. He was upset as he watched from the street as his burning stuff was being thrown out the window. He came up with a BS cover story that his stereo shorted out and started the fire. The truth was that he and some friends were drunk and playing a game/contest of bouncing wooden matches off the tile floor to get them to light. At the time, there was a fabric drape over the closet opening, and one of the matches set it and the contents of the closet ablaze,

The Biltmore lasted much longer than that. I lived there in the mid 90s and I believe it lasted a few more years until it was demolished to make room for Raynor library. It still had a few long time (non-student) residents, but was mostly student occupied when I was there. I am sure plans were already underway to close it down and replace it with a new structure. Absolutely no repairs of any significance were done to the units during those last few years. It was an interesting place to live to be sure.

Thanks for the correction on the tear down time frame. Forgot that it survived that long.

I was an early riser and on the weekends they only had brunch and dinner, so on Saturdays I would grab breakfast there: Bacon and eggs, toast, orange juice and coffee was 40c. I wasn't sure if it was on the corner of 13th or 12th, but yeah it was Milts. Was the building white?

I am very envious of all the current students as they have a beautiful campus, but as you say "less character". Marquette was not just in the city it was of the city as our neighbors worked and lived among the students who lived on "campus". Much of that is missing today.
never realized how MU got rid of pretty much everything that shaped our lives next to the education. what good is real chilli when there ain't no bars to close down to make the ritual walk or stumble? maybe the powers that been didn't like the challenge for schools to be the number fill-in-the-blank party school.
i remember tending bar at hegs watching many a debate about sports, current affairs, networking lawyers and judges and political figures. just a place which was a short walk from everywhere to meet for beers, pool, darts, pac-man, cribbage, bar dice, video golf games, saturday afternoon college football or basketball, pregame beers, and last but not least-everyone's irish on st paddy's day.
never forget "felz houston ate his hands"
funny story-when paul remodeled the place which included the bathrooms, the first thing that went into the mens room before the urinals could be anointed was that iconic piece of graffiti.

There was a Gimbels downtown as well. They were once headquartered in Milwaukee.

Yes, the building was white - northeast corner of 13th and Wisconsin, basically kitty corner from Schroeder.
I think the idea that you need bars to have a quality college experience is...questionable.

Really? My RAs were always at the bars. As was I. But I just think there are a lot of ways to get a great MU experience.
And as I have said, the University isn't leasing to bars.

"...pretty much...' not everything, but a good part of it. and note that i said "shaped our lives" now i believe, with the exception of the annex or whatever it's referred to, is about the only place on campus to have a drink. well, with the exception of ones dorm rooms. the mug rack was a fantastic meeting place. seems like getting rid of that was the beginning of the end of that aspect of the campus experience.
yes, there are other venues for students to shape their college experience as well

Mecca Man!
I have a feeling Marquette would rather see a development of significant stature in between those blocks that the crappy Angelo's build and the decrepit Gilman building. Those apartments were bad 16 years ago.
If Marquette kicks out Real Chili, we revolt. However, I'm fine rebuilding that side of the block.

In the late 1970s, Marquette had an add running on the Milwaukee television stations, promoting itself to potential students as an excellent destination point. The tag line was " a Jesuit education in the urban classroom". I remember at the time thinking how cool and how accurate that line really was.
