Yuuuuuuuuuuupppppppp
How much of the unrestricted corporate consolidation caused this? Less price competition/competitors allowing for stickier price increases
From the article:
Edwards added that he fears the "super-normal profit margins" of corporations in the U.S. and abroad could eventually "inflame social unrest" if consumers continue to struggle with inflation.
Edwards, a global bank strategist, later suggests that price controls might be necessary. Talk about something that would "inflame social unrest." Half of America already thinks the other half is "socialist."
But yes, corporations (and their officers, boards, etc) are greedily raking it in, and the rest of us just have to keep ponying up whatever it takes to live.

When you buy a stock do you expect the management to do their best to increase earnings ?

Yes, ethically.

How do you see gross margin percentage relating to ethics ?
Is a branded consumer product ,such as cosmetics , with a historical 60 percent gross margin unethical .

Naah, I want them to go out and kiss the backside of everyone who doesn't have a stake in the company's profitability. Make unnecessary jobs. Waste capital. Invest in peripheral green projects that have nothing to do with the product or service the company makes. Let the government regulate profitability, executive compensation and corporate compensation policy.
Most of all, my retirement be damned.
Seriously, I hope the companies that are the foundation of my investment follow the law. Their emissions into the air, ground and water meet EPA standards. Their dealings with foreign countries and foreign corporations meet U.S. anti-corruption standards. That they make a risk-based, market participant rate of return while reinvesting in their business to make world-class products and services.
For example, I have flown United Airlines all of my adult business life. Why? United gets me to where I want to go on-time and, believe it or not, in comfort. Their planes are generally well maintained and relatively new. Their emissions meet EPA standards. They seem to be making a market-based rate of return given the volatility in the airline business.
Do I give a crap that they're using soy based jet fuel? Hell no! If it works in a CFM6, I'm happy with it!
You've made it known that you've built whole bunch of personal wealth playing the market. More power to you. Sincerely happy for your success.
How do you keep a straight face when talking poorly about the industries that built your personal wealth. My guess is that if you divested all of your "dirty" money, you'd be wee bit poorer.
Again, congrats on the success. Your point of view is disingenuous.

I invest in companies from a lot of industries I don't love. And yes, it does feel hypocritical at times.
I do think there are ways for CEOs and boards to make profits while running companies ethically, but I'm sure it's not easy. And one person's definition of "ethical" is often different from another person's definition.
For the record, I don't really "play the market." I'm a long-term, conservative investor who mostly holds boring, dividend-growing companies.

then, the ends justify the means, eyn'a?
so tell me how do you police these companies and who's reporting do you believe when say, a story of "unethical" behavior should arise? do you immediately run to your computer and sell sell sell. there, that'll show them i'm a man of my word

For those without a Wall Street Journal subscription, here's the gist:
Corporate profits could be the reason for stubborn inflation. Yes, pandemic- and Ukraine war-related supply chain disruptions increased companies' costs, but some businesses aren't just covering their higher expenses, they're boosting profit margins, European Central Bank economists say. This was a bigger contributor to inflation during the second half of last year than rising wages.

Our Company has had record earnings the last two years.
We have a reputation for reliability and service. In times of supply chain disruption , and labor shortage that matters to our customers.
As a result our business gained market share the last few years. We did not have to discount pricing to get this new business . We do pass through price increases . We push back against price increases when we see end user demand destruction and a few smart suppliers are starting to recognize the limits of price increases.
We have been giving all workers special year end bonuses . That program has been well received and works as a retention tool.

So what you're saying is you're contributing to inflation.
Just kidding, 9-9-9. It's great that you share the wealth with your employees. That's the way it should be. Wishing you and yours good fortune and health.
