You were guaranteed this when MU hired Shaka Smart.  He's a crapty game coach and chokes in the NCAA's.

Their defense is making it tough to drive. We are going to have to hit some shots.

On the flip side, they are getting into the lane too easily. I’m confident we will turn it around.

That's just not even close to true.

Flagler, Cryer, George on Baylor are hands down the best in the country.

Kudos to MSU’s defense. Has our guys pressing a bit. They are cutting off our lanes and causing the fluidity of the offense to get bogged down.

MU is very lucky.  MSU has missed the last 4 three pointers and they were wide open.  Bad defense

MU not going to win jacking threes, but may be their only recourse .

Shaka the Maestro needs to get the team back together here, the offense is stagnant and he may have to put Kolek back in before too late.

With Kolek out MU can't play the triangle with Oso. Not good. It will come later, still Kam needs to keep them in this game. And they need to play better defense and get more possessions and more shots. Were in good shape. Do not fret my friends. The Spartans shot so well and they're playing some bully ball. We've seen this movie before.  Close game at the half and then the determination and the return of Kolek will reign in the the second half and all of us will dance around like we're crazy fools.  If I was Smart I would say "Don't let them in the lane. Foul them. We want them to shoot threes."

We will be ok. Keep it around 10 or under at half and its good

Both of Koleks fouls were fouls. He needs to stop regressing like he's playing at George Mason

You are right. The refs will be the main reason again, followed by Kolek's sprain thumb.  Just wait....

MU lucky down 10, could be 20 easily.

Title: Re: MU/MSU Game Thread
Post by: MUCam on March 19, 2023, 04:54:38 PM
Shaka and MU looking like they have no idea what just hit them. Keep it to 10 or less at half and we got a chance. MSU looks like want it more though

MSU is playing great defense. It’s got us rattled. And Kolek just isn’t the same. Like someone said, the thumb is likely way worse than we were lead to believe.

Need to breathe a little. If we keep pressing, we play right into their hands.

Missed bunch of layups and free throws.  To be in this position is a miracle with no Oso, no Kolek, no Joplin.

Ben Gold had two big plays, the pass for a bucket (Omax missed the and one) and that three pointer. Just huge.

Don't look for much playing time for S. Jones in second half.

MSU lost Hoggard and we lost Kolek and Oso.  Evened out for awhile.

Make some of these layups, box out on rebounds and lets go....

Muggsy

Need to get a run going and let things get looser on offensive. MSU will make things difficult in a half court slugfest, time to change the tempo of the game.

We didn't have any offensive flow in the 1H.  It's going to take 2 of our top 3 players playing at the level we have seen all year.

Joey is playing off of Omax because he knows he can’t defend him off the bounce. That’s why the 3’s are there.

Yes, but if Omax attacks his shoulder hard off the bounce, Joey will foul, even with a bit of space he can't keep up. Gets fouls on MSU so we can get to the line, and can get Joey in foul trouble.

Last 9 minutes, MU has 3 points and 9 turnovers.

That along with those three wide open three point misses with lead, really, really hurt. Might be the demise.

Need a Kam Jones nuclear ballistic run.

Perhaps the injury had something to do with it.

Injured brain.  Most of those turnovers were with his good hand.

Shame, guy played great all year up to last two

Terrible person though. Larry Nassar apologist

Exactly. That short little b*tch Izzo is crying over basketball basketball basketball!!! What about all those Larry Nassar victims, you phony? That's what makes me ill. Izzo sided with the monster.

This is just a game. Enjoy it will or lose. I learned a long time ago to have fun and not take it too serious.. It's not life.

Now, it's time for "60 Minutes" of government propaganda.

Each player has room for improvement,
All have flaws in there game, if they all improve 3-5 percent next year they will be better.

Jesus, I had to turn it off, but MSU has a right to celebrate. MU would’ve been going nuts if they pulled that one out, and they were the favorites.

I didn’t have much of an issue with coaching today, though I would’ve liked to see a timeout when MSU started to pull away late. But bigger picture, this season was one of the best coaching performances in program history.

Outstanding, unexpected season. If off season improvements continue like last summer with Kolek and Oso in particular we will be awesome next season. Bet we lose no one to the transfer portal because we have such a huge upside but will also have targets on our backs. Enjoyed this team and enjoyed this year... Looking ahead to a great season next year ...

Injuring your off hand has more of an impact than you think. It can affect your "defense" of the ball while your dribbling with your strong hand, your confidence, and your equilibrium.

Tyler was not himself.

All the comments about Izzo being a bad person are pathetic. Who gives a flying fudge what kind of person he is. He obviously knows how to get his kids to play basketball. Own the loss, we played poorly and represented the Big East poorly.

TKO has clearly not played well the last two games.  IF the injury is of any significance, it may have impacted his play even though it is his off hand that was injured.  I imaging it's difficult to play/focus when you are in pain.  I'm willing to cut some slack.  A few of his teammates weren't there today either.

I don’t get this. I really don’t. A lot of people read an ESPN article (and boy are they known for journalistic integrity….) and now want to throw Izzo under the bus?

Why? Do you even know what he said?

This is silly and sounds like sour grapes and ignorance.

We lost. The ignorant cheap shots are unnecessary.

I honestly think you should all actually read the first comments he made with a fair and impartial eye.

He repeatedly commented on the courageousness of the victims. He showed empathy and respect for them, while he acknowledged the permanent damage done by Nassar.

He took exception to people generalizing and throwing out the baby with the bath water by imputing Nassar’s disgusting behavior on everyone associated with MSU - which is what it seems I see to be happening here.

Was he perfect in what he said? No. But, living in Michigan, I read the comments and I thought people were looking then as you all are now for a reason to trash him. Again, throwing the baby out with the bath water.

But, we likely won’t see eye to eye on this ever. I just never read his comments and thought he was anything but respectful and empathetic of the victims.

I’ll sign off.

We should look at this season as a real step forward for our program. There are many reasons why we lost but I think the main one is simply inexperience playing on the big stage. We were not ourselves. This was not our normal game. We gained a lot of experience which will help us next year.

A great run for a very young team and it was done in 2 years by Shaka. Better years are in front of us. This team deserves a great welcome home at Billy Mitchell. They gave it their all but nerves did them in. Next year they will go further. MU is back on the map.

I’m surprised at your position, given your normal level-headed posts. Maybe you know things I don’t know. Maybe you’re personally aware of things he has done wrong to you or yours. I’m always open to being wrong.

I do know for a fact that there is so much good he has done for the community.

I was talking with someone recently about this as it relates to Boeheim and Pitino. We put these guys on pedestals. They sit up there in charge of 18-22 year old kids. They take on fatherly roles. Then they defend their kids. All the while, they are under incredible pressure to win. Are they perfect? No. Not any single one of them. Look at Beilein who was as closed to perfect as you would’ve wanted. Eventually controversy found him too.

Eventually you’re in the spotlight long enough and it shines on you. And in America the only thing we like more than putting people on pedestals is tearing them down.

There’s a massive difference between paying a couple of kids under the table and being a shill for an administration that knowingly swept these accusations under the rug for god knows how long.

Maybe take a look at some Title IX infractions under his watch and yeah, I know plenty about Michigan State’s handling of their student athletes off the court and it’s a disgrace

Usually I don’t see this type of vitriol unless there is a U of Michigan connection.

But if you’re like me, we have both probably said more than we need to on the topic.

More importantly, my heart and soul lie with Marquette. And I hope Shaka can be one of those few exceptions — like Jay Wright — for which these discussions never come up. I think we are in good hands here. He certainly seems genuinely a great character man.
