My favorite line "At Marquette, the Glue Guy is the star."
I know you aren't supposed to do this, but could someone post just the part about Stevie for those of us who don't have a subscription?

That's a little hard to do when you don't currently have access to a computer.
Stevie has done some amazing things this year. Well deserved recognition.
Stevie Mitchell (https://theathletic.com/college-basketball/player/stevie-mitchell-TIimtESHaFFzjhME/), 6-2 sophomore guard, Marquette (https://theathletic.com/college-basketball/team/marquette-golden-eagles-college-basketball/)
At most places, the Glue Guy is appreciated. At Marquette, he's celebrated. Aside from praising the qualitative contributions that Glue Guys make, Golden Eagles coach Shaka Smart tries to quantify them as well. He counts deflections (as well as deflection intervals, which is the average time between deflections) and awards a "deflection belt" to the player who has tallied the most. He also gives out an offensive rebounding chain and has his managers chart EGB's, which is Smart's acronym for "Energy Giving Behaviors" like slapping the floor, patting a teammate on the back, chest bumps, and vocal encouragement. Before the season started, Smart took the team on a retreat and held small group meetings so the team could discuss what everyone's role should be offensively, defensively and culturally.
Thus, it hasn't been difficult for Mitchell to play the role of Glue Guy while other players get to be stars. At Marquette, the Glue Guy is the star. "Our coaches do an awesome job showing appreciation for everything a Glue Guy does," Mitchell says. "They make you feel like the man."
Little wonder why the Golden Eagles have been one of the season's biggest surprises, going from being picked to finish ninth in the Big East in the preseason to winning the regular season outright. That was what both Mitchell and Smart envisioned when they spoke on the day that Smart took the job in March 2021. Mitchell had given his commitment to Steve Wojciechowski, the previous coach, and though he still wanted to come to Marquette, he didn't solidfy that decision until he had a chance to talk to the new hire. "He just seemed like someone I wanted to play for," Mitchell says. "He cares about you as a basketball player, but his emphasis is on helping you be a better person on or off the court."
Mitchell played 10.8 minutes per game as a freshman, but he has started all 31 games this season and has contributed every which way possible: scoring (7.2 points per game), rebounding (2.7), passing (1.1 assists) and defense (1.7 steals). Offensively, Mitchell has had his share of standout games, most notably on New Year's Eve when he returned home to spark a win at Villanova (https://theathletic.com/college-basketball/team/villanova-wildcats-college-basketball/) by going for 19 points, four steals, two assists and no turnovers. During a pivotal home win over Xavier (https://theathletic.com/college-basketball/team/xavier-musketeers-college-basketball/) on Feb. 15, Mitchell had 17 points, four rebounds and a career-high six steals while chasing Musketeers point guard Souley Boum (https://theathletic.com/college-basketball/player/souley-boum-OPQh11c9nhUobm7o/) all night.
"He's a Glue Guy, but he's really a do whatever the team needs guy," Smart says. "Even more important than the basketball stuff, he's just an unbelievable teammate. He pours everything he has into his guys."
Smart also appreciates that Mitchell is an excellent student who carries a 3.9 grade point average. Michell may be playing a much different role than the one he played at Wilson High School in Reading, Pa., where he set the school's all-time scoring record en route to being named the state's Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year, but he is smart enough to understand his value to the team, and feel confident that his teammates and coaches see that value as well. "He's really hard on himself, so my message to him is, trust yourself and shoot the ball when you're open," Smart says. "The most important message is that we really value you and we really appreciate you. This team would be nowhere near where it is if it wasn't for Stevie."
At Marquette, he is celebrated....
On scoop, however.....
stevie always comes dialed in. he's always ready to play defense and he knows his role offensively. what's cool about stevie from my observation is that he gets off on playing defense first. like dennis rodman and rebounding, stevie seems like he'd rather get the steals than points

In fairness, I think almost all Scoopers have come around on Stevie. But yes, some struggled to get there earlier this season.
Stevie has played very good basketball in BE play. His added scoring has helped a great deal and he sets the tone on defense. He has been a very big part of this year's success.
Stevie's lockdown on Boum
at home was the best defensive game by a player in the Big East this year. Moreso, that essentially won MU the Big East and likely won the POY award for Tyler.
I don't think there has been a negative statement about Stevie on scoop... The only other guy in that category might be Al.

I liked him stifling three Butler players in a row before contesting the shot from a fourth.

Stevie is made of literal glue, and that's a big concern to me

So far, "I'm not leaving!" might be my favorite thing about this season. It's right up there with "F*ck 'Em" as the most memorable things of the season...so far. I'm still hoping for something even more memorable to come.
"We're not leaving!" would be a great motto for next year's team.

I love seeing all these awards heading MU's way. They are all well deserved.

Awesome to see Stevie get his flowers. He deserves them. One of the most consistent players on the roster
Stevie is a whirling dervish. So glad he's on this team.
Early in the season, he got the Lockett treatment. To be fair, nearly everyone has come around.

Mine too. He has been all year, but his performance against Boum absolutely cemented it...made him an "all-timer" for me.

Marquette's interior defense lacks the true shot blocker and why bully-ball can work against them. The perimeter defenders have been so good (OMax falls in here), that it has hampered teams ability to initiate offense. It doesn't always work and Stevie on offense can be maddening but it's a pleasure to see a Marquette player guard like that
And he's only a sophomore...

Accurate. Two glue guys that people eventually came around on and they won BE titles.
That defensive possession late in the home game vs Butler where Stevie covered every guy who touched the ball was absolutely amazing and indicative of who he is as a player. Just so tough and relentless. Love him. Well deserved honor!
I have said a few times this season, but I think I have had nine different favorite players this season. Pretty cool to be a fan of a team that you would have to try not to like a guy as player or a person. This might not happen again for a long, long time.
Goose, like you I have several faves. My wife has decided Stevie's her fave, though.
"The guy just never quits, never lets the guy he's guarding breathe. He energizes the whole team, and he does it even if he never scores a point."
I have learned not to argue with Mrs. 82 very often ... and I certainly won't argue with her about that!

The affection that Mrs. Legs feels toward Stevie has become an issue for us.
A couple of weeks ago Seth Davis went on Twitter asking for nominations, and I responded with a few videos of Stevie.
So I am taking full credit for his making the team. ;D

82, Mrs. Miles is in the same boat re: Stevie.

You never know. You may have helped a great deal. Davis does follow the Big East closely though. You and the first place finish probably pushed him over the edge. Nice work!

I don't read the board as closely as others so I missed the lack of appreciation fans had for him. I do remember reading he was going to lose minutes to Jop which made me chuckle

Crazy. I'm not sure there's a more Shaka player in all of college basketball than SM
I don't post much anymore, but this thread got me to join in. What cemented it for me with Stevie was the X game. It's what I saw. MU was struggling offensively. The fans were restless. MU down double digits. At a TO, Shaka and staff discussing, Stevie takes Shaka's seat. He is getting in everyone's face with passion. MU came out of that TO and turned the game around with their defense. The D led to offense and the crowd came alive and the game changed.
At the TO, I commented to the those with me about Stevie taking control of that huddle. I have seen Oso do that, but that was the only time I saw Stevie do it. And do it with passion. To me, that brought the team together that game and changed the direction of the team - both in that game and going forward.

I think there is a long line of Scoop spouses who "admire" Stevie. One of them regularly hugs Stevie after home games, while her Scooper husband is forced to take their picture.

Hopefully this isn't along the lines of what is discussed in this thread
Love how Stevie gives it his all on every possession , He is a force to be reckoned with as a result of that effort . Stevie is a great teammate and outstanding in the classroom. Has incredible on court IQ .
Kids like this don't come around often . Glad he is being celebrated both internally and externally .
