Anyone have any recommendations? I am just looking for a couple one off sitdowns to go through documentation, set goals, planning for some big upcoming expenses, and create a plan that I can execute. I am not looking for an ongoing relationship where someone else handles my accounts. Has anyone done something like this with someone they would recommend?

I'm not in the Northern Chicago Suburbs, but just to give you a general idea of what a financial plan should cost.
For a basic plan the range is between $300 - $1000.
For a moderately complex plan it is between $1000 - $2500
For an advanced complexity plan you're looking at $2500 - $10000
This is just a general guideline for how my firm prices fee based plans, most plans fall into the 1st or 2nd category. The actual cost depends on the level of complexity of your personal situation and what you want to have the planner look at for you. Retirement, asset allocation, insurance coverage, college savings planning, etc.

I am trying to figure out how to fund some big projects over the next 5-10 years (home updates and renovations mostly) and just wanted a sanity check for timelines, how much I can actually afford to spend on updates, and best methods to fund the projects (save up cash first? home equity loan? sell stock?). Nothing super complex.

I also prefer a face-to-face meeting, especially if it's the first initial meeting or what we call our "connect" meeting. While we are doing more through zoom, most of our zoom calls tend to be with existing clients, I would say about 90% are with existing relationships. We offer it to our clients and most still opt for in person meetings or phone calls. When we do a zoom call with a new relationship, those tend to be referral clients so it's someone who is coming to us because one of our existing clients sent them our way. Nothing can really replace being able to shake someone's hand, looking them in the eye, reading their body language, etc. and it's also good to know that they are wearing pants.
