Title: Friar SOTG

I think Kam due to clutch scoring to keep a bit of cushion. Kolek great too and clutch free throws.

Kam Jones. When it was 70-65 and Providence had the ball. Jones got a key steal, followed my a huge 3 on the next possession.

That cemented MU's position.

I was thinking Kam with his 3's and drives past bigs, but I've got to go with Kolek.

Don't want to deny Kam passing Joey, but I thought TK deserved it.

Really great team effort.

I'm going with Kam as he hit a couple of huge shots to return the momentum to us.

But Kolek was huge down the stretch making those free throws.
Title: Re: Friar SOTG
Post by: Dr. Blackheart on January 18, 2023, 11:17:49 PM
Kolek. 8 rebounds, 8 free throws to ice it. Plus, smarts to call a time out when trapped and falling.

Kam wasn't really a factor in the 1st half I thought. Only three points.

Tyler brought it all game, adjusted nicely with the right hand from the Xavier game.  KPom agrees.

Hard not to give it to Kolek with 19, 8, and 6...but Kam did seem to hit the big shots when we needed him to. I also appreciated Shaka's postgame where he said that Kam called an OOB play for himself and Shaka went with it and it led to a 3. Still, I think TKO had the better game.

Of course we can't give it to him because he wasn't the lead scorer  ;D

But without Kam, MU isn't in position for a free throw parade.

Kam, although O-Max's D in the second half on Hopkins was commendable.  At half he had 13 points on 6-7 shooting, and only finished with 19 on 9-16 shooting, and at least one or two of his second half buckets was when O-Max got switched off of him.

Well sure ... but without Kolek being so good at so many things in the first half (and also in the second half), Kam isn't in position to hit his late 3s.

Absolutely no problem with Kam being the choice, but it's not as if Kolek won't have earned the nation's most important sports award if selected.

I mean, in addition to the points and assists ... a 6-3 guard with 8 rebounds for a team that has trouble on the glass.

Well it's 19, 8 and 6 vs 21, 4, and 3, with 3 steals as well, plus 50% from three on high volume as well as the timely buckets.  It's not exactly like Kam was only out there scoring, he had a pretty complete game too.

He also had three steals to TKO's 0 (and that last TO I would blame on Oso for for making a poor pass or not calling a T.O. after he picked up his dribble).  Both would be fitting, wouldn't complain about either, but I don't think you can say that it's definitely TKO just by looking at his line.

On the play-by-play sheet, that turnover was, indeed, given to Oso. Kam had 2 TOs in the first half, when he really didn't play that well, and one midway through the 2nd half.

Again, no problem giving it to Kam, but Kolek was pretty darn good the entire game while Kam was meh just about the entire first half (3 points on 1-for-3 shooting, 2 TO, 1 reb, 1 asst, 1 stl).

Gotcha, didn't go through the play-by-play to see who they credited with that one, I just remember thinking that it was a bad pass by Oso after he picked up his dribble in a bad spot.

It sounds like me mostly agree that you can't just look at players line because there's more that goes into it.  Kam got the timely buckets when PC was making a run, Kolek hit the fts down the stretch, all points count the same in the end, but Kam's were more important IMO because of the momentum involved.

Kolek also only had 2 TOs and the ball is in his hands a lot, but I was not impressed with some of his decision making down the stretch.  When we ran out football out of bounds play, TKO got the ball, took two dribbles, stopped in a corner and had to burn a TO.  Later, he picked up his dribble right after he crossed mid court when PC was coming with a double, almost turned it over and luckily got another time out called.  Neither effected his box score line, but both were uncharacteristic mistakes from our starting PG that cost us two time outs.

I will admit to holding TKO to a higher standard in those situations, just because we have seen how good he can be in them.  Again, would have no complaints if the mods gave it to him, I just think Kam had a better game with more impactful moments.

He was nearly in the corner when he  received the pass. When he was trapped, I give him credit for a) knowing he had a time out left and b) using it rather than being forced into a risky play.

This is why Kam should be SOTG.  Kolek had a very good game, but Kam's made shots down the stretch were absolutely critical.

Sidenote:  Kolek being so vastly improved in scoring at the basket is a real bonus for the team and making them that much more challenging to defend.

Disagree about where he received the ball, he could have turned any direction.  He also had his dribble, chose to take two dribbles towards the corner and then pick up his dribble. At that point it was always going to be either a turnover or a timeout.  Should have either immediately started up court, or immediately look to make a pass with the double coming.  I think he was expecting to get fouled right away and when that didn't happen he didn't know how to react.  Hopefully he learns from it.

So Kam gets his maiden and it's up on the board, but is he giving Scoop a message because it took so long?

Ha! You made me take a good look at the entire slide show. Great stuff.

As Dandy Don once told Cosell, "He's just saying, We're Number 1."

When do we rename this High Scorer of the Game???  ;D (Note this would be in teal if I weren't lazy)

Congrats, Kam! Nice game.

The slideshow really highlights Kam's "unconventional" shooting mechanics.

I'm glad none of the coaching staff tried to fix them (or glad they failed if they did try) because as weird as it looks coming off his hand, it works.

Or they decided don't fix what ain't broken, just don't take mid court shots like you're Curry
