Soriano getting a O board and then immediately fouling him is literally the one thing we cant do.

Oh that and turn it over so they get a break away alley oop.

Aside from a couple of forced TOs the D looks horrendous early. And we are not even making Soriano work for thos O boards.

Our 1st half defense looks horrible again.  Thankfully our offense has kept us close. I thought OMax and Ross got hammered on drives with no calls. Idk.
Title: Re: MU/St. J Game Thread
Post by: Daniel on January 03, 2023, 05:43:27 PM
Need to stop them inside.   Maybe a quick zone.  SJ scoring way too easily.   Our inside defense has been poor.

We need an immediate time out.

Stop flailing and falling on the ground we dont get the calls.

Make some damn free throws

Play some damn D

Rebound the ball

Really really poor start. And of course Posh remembers how to shoot against us. Just like Bynum.

We are gonna get boat raced if things dont shift fast.

Defend. Win.

As simple as that. St. John's on pace for 110 ain't gonna cut it.  Gotta dig in on that end.

People always say scoring toward your bench in the 2nd half is an advantage for the offenses.  You'd think Marquette would be able to dig in defensively near their bench.

That's about what it takes for Jop not to shoot.

Posh Alexander hilariously hits 2-2 on 3's after going 2 for his last 15.  Sean Jones has picked his pocket twice though.  Stevie picking up where he left off against Nova.  Oso getting some valuable rest.  We should be fine.

Love Oso's skillset.

But that TO was obvious for about 15 seconds.

Luckily it was just a travel instead of either a live ball fast break or a charge. But a TO was coming on that.
Title: Re: MU/St. J Game Thread
Post by: Vander Blue Man Group on January 03, 2023, 06:01:00 PM
They're shooting 68% and we're down 1. I don't expect that to continue.
Title: Re: MU/St. J Game Thread
Post by: GoldenEagles03 on January 03, 2023, 06:01:05 PM
Oso is getting dominated by Soriano and everytime we have a chance to tie or take a lead we turn it over.

They look to be the tougher team right now, but I'd like to think Marquette has the pride to finish the tougher team.

It's completely unnecessary/superfluous dribbling. Oso needs to wale up a bit.

This is the worst defense I have ever seen us play.

I think we have one stop(that wasnt a TO) in like 20 possessions.

Omax is way out of control tonight too. Panics everytime.

I LOVE Oso, but he can't shoot at all to play the stretch 4 in the nba. And he sure as hell can't rebound and defend against NBA 5's. He's having a bad game but even in spite of that, everyone pump the breaks on the pro talk.

They very easily could have been down 15-20 at half and fortunately they are not. If SJ continues to shoot at this rate there is not much they can do. I think SJ is going to regret not having a bigger lead at half when it is all said and done tonight.

They have 4 threes........not a lot

MU defense putrid. Shaka better start protecting pick and rolls, killed them.

Sean Jones not good. Did another of his drives, swatted again and then terrible turnover pass.

Oso had zero rebounds until last minute. Omax needs to play or MU done.  Omax had four points, one rebound, three turnovers and two fouls.

Free throws, two front ends missed, plus others. A lot of time left in

SJU without starting guard and a key reserve and yet......

It's not difficult to shoot well when you are getting almost nothing but layups and dunks.

If you want them to regress you better keep them away from the rim'

They very easily could have been down 15-20 at half and fortunately they are not. If SJ continues to shoot at this rate there is not much they can do. I think SJ is going to regret not having a bigger lead at half when it is all said and done tonight.

Yes, Goose.  But don't you feel that our intensity wasn't there defensively in the 1st H?

Muggsy

The defense was not good and they could not miss and only down 7. They might lose by 20, but I think SJ is going to be sorry they did not play better D in the first half.

On top of their hot shooting, we had sloppy turnovers and sucked on the line. I am shocked down only 7.

As soon as Kolek and OMax went out after our big run the momentum instantly changed and the O went stagnant and the D started giving up easy buckets. This has become a trend.

Somehow we have to figure out a couple combos that can at least tread water when Kolek, Oso and OMax have to go out.

Oso needed to stay in front of that guy on the sweeping drive to the rim. What are you saving your fouls for? They do you no good on the score sheet. But I'm glad Soriano has 4 now. Obviously that's important.  It's getting tight. O-Max rips down the reb

We badly need a game where we execute down the stretch in the half court.

That quick run out to Omax was massive.

Gotta keep running the offense and not take the air out of the ball.

Lol Omax gifted a foul on that - looked like he just mis-timed his jump

Those three ball shots misses in last minutes were not good, especially with Soriano on bench.

SJU's scouting report said the best way to beat MU is to give them an 8 point lead with 7 minutes to play and watch them go silent.

Anyone predict 29 pts for Omax at halftime when he had 4 pts (I love that my iPad knows to capitalize Omax when I type it without a capital O)

I knew he had to be the difference, but 29 is unpredictable.

Such a good half.

Pretty pathetic that SJU can only draw 3,770 people to a Big East game in a city of 8 million people.  They should be playing at MSG and drawing like we do in Milwaukee.  They should fire everyone involved because they are clearly doing things wrong.
