Title: [Cracked Sidewalks] Radford Preview
Post by: brewcity77 on October 15, 2022, 09:09:26 AM
Marquette opens their season against a program they've never faced before, but a coach was an old Big East foe and a star player who was in the Big East last year. The Highlanders got better as last year went on, but how will a load of roster changes impact their 2022-23 prospects? Cracked Sidewalks breaks it down.

Thanks Brew.  Honestly, reading that makes me think they have a decent amount of talent and that it will be a better win possibly than a Q4.

This is the type of game I think this team could lose.

Young group going up against a veteran group of players looking for a fresh start.

I don't expect a loss, but wouldn't be surprised by one. This is the type of game like New Hampshire last year where the game will be up for grabs in the last 4 minutes.

Agree.  I wasn’t getting a warm and fuzzy feeling reading Brew’s preview.

We will be even worse than I expect if we’re worried about Radford.

Don't think this one will be close at all.

I wonder what an objective preview from another fan base of MU would be?

I think it would be, “if this player gets better and that player develops and that player can learn to play defense and if they collectively figure out how to rebound, then MU will be a really tough matchup” “If not, we should probably beat them”.

I don’t know if I’m scared of anyone on our team if I’m another team's fan. MU fans know more about their team than anyone and we all know about 5-6 players need to take big jumps to have a legitimate NCAA team.  For those who wanted the Wisconsin basketball concept of team basketball in a system, we’ve got it (albeit a vastly different system).  Will be fun to see if Shaka’s plan will work this year.

I hope those who are more optimistic than me are %100 correct.

Thanks Brew.  Honestly, reading that makes me think they have a decent amount of talent and that it will be a better win possibly than a Q4.

I think they could get to an upper-level Q4 win, but in 3 years of the NET rankings, only 4 Big South teams have managed to not be Quad 4 games. Even if they are a top-half Big South team (would be a huge jump from expectation) they'll still probably land in Q4.

This is the type of game I think this team could lose.

While anything is possible, this is one of those takes that nudges up to the edge of credulity. While I would give Darris Nichols credit for putting together a roster that looks like it could be more competitive than expected in the Big South, it's still a bottom half Big South team playing its first game together with 13 new players in a hostile environment. Other than Josiah Jeffers, no other player there has more experience in their system than Kolek, Oso, O-Max, and Kam have in Shaka's system in terms of minutes played. And while a number of their players (Antoine, Smith, Ezeakudo) transferred from bigger programs, they transferred down because they weren't featured at a higher level. If all breaks right, Radford could be competitive in the Big South. Playing a road game against a Big East foe? I'd give them a less than 1% chance of winning.

Thinking they could lose to Radford is some gigantic Costco-sized container of COLE.

We never should have fired Wojo.

Woj elected to get fired to take an extended vacation on MU (donor(s)) coin.

If we’re at the point as a program that we need to worry about beating Radford at home? Or anywhere? Yeah. Maybe.

Is the rebounding your primary source of anxiety?  I think we'll be fine vs Radford.

Well, hopefully Shaka can usher us to a better finish than 97 as we got in Year 2 of Wojo.  Especially considering the empty cupboard Shaka inherited.  Personally, I'm not worried about Radford.  Or MU finishing 97th in KenPom this year.

Seems you should take some of your old advice you used to peddle here:  R-E-L-A-X

I’m not the one saying Radford is the type of team we could lose to. Maybe discuss with those people.

We’ll see if we finish above 97. Starting in the low 70s.

Good idea - run a poll for the Mopes.

I'm not really concerned about anything. I don't think they will lose or should lose, just that it wouldn't surprise me.

Just a group of young players playing a group of veterans.

New Hampshire was up for grabs last year with 1 minute left on the clock.

The opener last year against (checks notes) SIUE Edwardsville was 39-38 at half.

Radford just has some quality veterans that could give a scare because the clock seems to move really fast for young teams early in the year when you fall behind.

If we can jump out to an early lead it may release some jitters. Time will tell.

Smart move.  No one likes working under a microscope.

I would prefer not to be jittery vs Radford and CMU.  Let's try to relax for now and put both of these teams to sleep early in both games.

Interesting that we've never played them.
How many D1 schools have we never played?  I assume a fair amount but I could be wrong.

There's a handful. This isn't completely updated, but it's not a bad resource.

Some of the most prominent are Oklahoma, Cal, and St Joe's. Maryland was on the list but we played them in Orlando in 2019.

St. Joes is a bit of a surprise as a Jesuit school.

GAME DAY BUMP!!!

If you already read the article, I'd encourage you to check it out again. I've added a "What We've Learned" section after looking at Radford's preseason results. It might give a better look of what to expect from the Highlanders tonight.
