Title: Next year
Post by: BCHoopster on March 02, 2022, 11:26:05 PM
I figure Lewis, Kurtz, Morsell and hopefully Elliott are gone next year. This leaves 10 under class players coming back, maybe 9 if Ellis leaves. There is only 2 starters back, an average player at best, and Prosper.  So I can see Mitchell fighting for starting time as I am not sure Jones is quick enough or strong enough to defend the 2. Joplin has potential but I can see 3 new transfers like this year.  At Center, Oso probably will be better, but he is weak.  Lots of work for Shaka to do in April.

Kolek is an average player at best? Oooookk.
Leading the BE in assists his first year playing the point is pretty average, totally.

Yes, there is always next year. Then we all can speculate on a fade down the stretch....again.

Having a great time supporting a team and coach that took a program from the dumps to the NCAA tourney.

Me too.

Shaka will have more time this offseason to correct the structural weaknesses on this roster that was built over a few short months last spring.   The present is bright; the future brighter.

I like your confidence, next years team will be the youngest team in America, with one junior, and a bunch of freshman and sophomores.  Transfer market needs to bring in some starters. Might be a step back next year.

??

Oso, Tyler and O-max (and probably not Lewis) will all be 3rd year players (i.e. juniors).  Who was your "one junior"?

Over the next two years Shaka will have time to build with a plan.  This year was just a rush necessarily.    I think we will have competitive teams going forward. Go Marquette!

Due to Covid, Tyler and Oso are Sophia next year and maybe I was wrong, 0max might be a soph as well, only freshman and Sophia then, no juniors then

Ok, sure, eligibility wise.  But those 3 (or 4) will be taking classes with Juniors, and be in their 3rd year of college hoops.  Are we also calling current (true) Freshman "still Freshman" next year?

This is why I hate that MU called them all Freshman this year. Next year MU is likely to have at least:

3x 3rd year college players (juniors)
3x 2nd year college players (sophomores)
4x 1st year college players  (freshman, one being Keeyan, RS Frosh)

side note:  Love the Sophia autocorrect.  A team full of Sophias!

Need to add talent via the transfer portal.  Combined with internal improvement, that should keep Marquette at tourney quality.

Assuming the players we expect to leave actually leave, and no one else does, were looking at a starting lineup of...

1. Kolek
2. Jones
3. ?
4. OMax
5. Oso

I could see Stevie or Joplin sliding into that 3-hole.  But I really like what they both bring as bench guys (Stevie defense, Joplin shooting).

So what we really need in the transfer portal is a wing or forward that can score. Our guard depth (Kolek, Stevie, Kam, Ellis, and the freshmen) is solid.  Oso, Keeyan, and Gold should have the front court looking solid.  I like Jop and OMax, but I'm not convinced starting both is a winning formula

That looks like an awful rebounding lineup.  Unless Keeyan or Gold are the much better than advertised.  We will need someone who can really rebound next year otherwise we will have a poor defense.

.

Not sold on Oso or Keeyan, both to me are backups, both are to skinny.  Need a physical presence in the middle, as well as a wing to replace Lewis.  Like two grad transfers if possible as Shaka working hard on 2023 recruits.

I like to hope that Sean Jones can come in and prove he deserves 20 minutes per game at the point.

I hope all the freshman can average 20 minutes a game.  Ross will give them some size at the 2 guard, and Gold some height.

Based on who we currently expect to have

1. Kolek
2. Jones
3. OMax
4. Oso/Gold
5. Gold/Oso

Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

I'd written off the Big East tournament as unnecessary. Now it's important. Frickin Demons.

I probably agree with you but feel about them the way I did about the Wojo team that played Murray State.

We'll have to see who they matchup with in the Big Dance

The Kiwi  is tall, but not a bruiser. OMax & Oso we've seen. If JL leaves, I'm wishing for an aircraft carrier who'd push his mother into section 27 for a rebound.

what are the chances someone could convince JL he needs one more year...bring vander in for the pep talk ;).  this year he showed flashes of being "the man" but next year he could be "THE MAN"

I think it all comes down to where he is projected to be drafted.  If he ends up as a 1st rounder he is gone... 2nd rounder, and... he still might be gone.   2nd round is so unpredictable though.
