Finally! All of that Marquette Gold swag will come in handy!
Great news. Welcome, young man.
Excellent news! He seemed to be enjoying himself during the game when he visited. Adds some much needed size to future classes
Welcome Ben!
Hope he is not as skinny as Oso? Somebody said he is like Chet Holmgren, That is skinny?

I'd be pretty happy if he's like Chet Holmgren.
Fantastic. I watched a few videos of him and I'm really impressed with his speed and coordination. It looks like he can shoot from the outside. Hope he can rebound and defend.

Looks like he could take Justin's spot, more of a wing, good coordination, can go left and right. Needs Todd Smith to give him 20 lbs. to fight Big East bigs.

Ha! I swear I was typing my Novak comp at the same time you were.
He lists himself at 6-10, 212. https://www.prospectiveinsight.com/post/ben-gold
The level of competition is not great in his own words, but that's what bringing him over for summer 1 is for. Intriguing prospect.
PI: How would you describe the basketball culture in New Zealand?
BG: They all get around you type of thing so they're all congratulatory, but the competition isn't the greatest. (Laughs) I'm probably the tallest person in the basketball community back home, so it's got good competition, but once you get older you want to go somewhere else to play so that you know you're going to get better and improve.
So, a project. A 6'10, sweet shooting prospect. Cool

Seems like a good get. Awesome. Might have some trademark issues with Ben Folds Five though, i can see the memes now
Ben Gold's 3? Don't want to hear anything about a 'Brick'.
Mixtape or not, the shooting stroke is smooth and pure and he moves well for someone that size. Agree we still need to add muscle to the roster, but the ability to knock down shots is always valuable.

I feel like international prospects are very hit or miss. Arizona is thriving because they found guys few others were in on.
Also, Kyle Smith at Washington State is doing great with international recruiting, so that's actually one of the programs you want to beat out. They were in on Bennedict Mathurin & found some productive, high efficiency imports in Efe Abogidi & Andrej Jakimovski. Seeing Wazzu in there is a good sign.

You're wildly misguided in your criticism.
International recruiting is 100% relationship and trust based. Most times, coaches may only see the guy play live maybe once. Otherwise it's mostly second hand info from coaches, scouts etc.
Most programs don't have international ties so they choose not to blindly go into the market.
Shaka recruited the kid so I'm expecting good things. He's not playing for a highschool team in New Zeland, he's playing for an international team, much of the time in the U.S. He's 6'10. After Kur leaves MU only has 2 players at 6'9". He looks like an 18 year old dorky kid whose never been outside a gym. Shaka will give him minutes and he will develop and surely be a reliable player in his third year.
Is he our first-ever Kiwi?
This dude is used to Christmas being the middle of summer and a generally mild/warm climate. January is gonna hit him like a freight train. Seems like a gym rat so that will serve him well.
My friend Nathan always says "Expect the worst, and hope for the best". He could be Sean Marks (a kiwi at Cal), or he could be Larry Bird. Larry played high school bb in French Lick. I think that's in France, right outside Paris. Not that I was ever good in geography.

- he can shoot from nba range in game action
- he can run the floor
- he can dribble[/il]
Already better then what a majority of our bigs can do. The question will be if his body can hold up vs big east bigs.

Coaches still need relationships for trustworthy recommendations on these guys. Shaka isn't sitting on YouTube watching mixtapes.
Not all coaches and programs have those relationships - Hence why the original poster was misguided saying that we should be dubious on the talent level because of Gold's final 3.

I'm guessing it was a joke. I've been in French Lick, Indiana. There are a couple of resorts there but the town itself is pure Hicksville.
Getting back to Gold- I cannot imagine Shaka would bring in a Kiwi or any other "offshore" player if he did not see something special about the guy. He's got a very good eye for talent. I do not care at all what schools were or were not recruiting Gold.

Nah, French lick iz kinda a sexual thang, aina?
I would estimate that the NBA global academy:
- has some good talent evaluators
- is a good source for overseas recruits
- could be a reliable long term pipeline (this is Shaka's 2nd)
Most of the people running the regional programs are former players or current scouts from NBA teams. The whole idea is to secure the best talent in the region. If the kid got into it and also played for NZ national team (juniors), that's a good start.
Probably he's had better coaching and more discipline than 98% of AAU kids.

From his cold, dead hands.
I think Marquette should find a way to bring on Milwaukee person, Rick Ness from Gold Rush as a sponsor.
If he can play like Bulter's Simas Lukosius of Lithuania did against us, he can contribute.
Move over Davidson, Marquette is going international (or at least trying again).
