I was at the MU Villanova game last night. A very impressive win against a solid Nova team. What was way less impressive was the conduct of the student section offering a F..... Nova and later an F....Jay Wright chant. Very disappointing. Jay Wright is humble in victory and gracious in defeat. The vulgar display by MU students is not appropriate for any university let alone a Catholic one. Shame on you
At least they showed up
Maryland fans did the same to Izzo on Tuesday. Kids do stupid things
I didn't care for the F Jay Wright chants, but that student section was absolutely fantastic last night.
Digger had beer spilled on him and had a song in his honor. During the Majerus/Dukiet era.
Loved the energy but expected a little more creativity ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I chalked the chants up to kids being kids, but they could be more creative. That said, the kids brought last night and it looks a real affair between the HC and the student body. Best part, this HC won them over without even trying.
You know what's even worse? Half filled student sections or the PA announcing "the best student section in the country" and lights banning over tarps covering the student section due to low attendance.
Was it a dumb and immature chant? Of course. So was the stupid "Overrated" chant late in the game. But guess what, every university, catholic, Jesuit, or otherwise, has this sort of stuff happens. Whoop de do. Nova students were chanting obscenities at Kolek in Philly.
The student section was loud, engaged, and rocking. I'll take that every day with the downsides as long as they aren't throwing debris on the floor
Glad to see there is broad support for vulgar and unneeded anger. If we as a people cannot conduct ourselves in a respectful way over something like a basketball game how is it possible to do so with things of real existential value? What is the value of education if you return to blood lust to support your side? How does a nation heal if nobody acts with civility??
Good lord.

In these dark times, perhaps the vitriol we spew comes from a feeling of self hate that brews to the surface when we look in the mirror. But we still put on our emotional mask, go outside, and go through the motions--knowing ultimately each decision we make is no decision at all due to the gentle indifference of the world.
But through all of this, we know one axiom rings true above all:
ND sucks
Stupid, but I don't blame them, they were out of practice. Wojo sucked the life out of everyone. I think everyone is trying to figure out how to properly fan again.
I agree it's dumb. I would have hoped for a "good game Nova" chant to end the game. Maybe one in support of Gillespie on being the big east MVP.
Let's not over-analyze this.
Kids will be kids. I'm sure Jay Wright has heard worse.
As a side note, Coach Wright is an incredible class act. It's hard to hate him even when Villanova hands us our heads!

The FU Nova chant is probably why Jay had his players continuing to foul, committing 9 in the final minutes when our odds of victory were 98+%.
I hated the students doing that as well. One can be enthusiastic supporters of the team without resorting to vulgarity.

OK, I'm old, but I disapprove of F-chants. It's not that I don't use the word myself in appropriate circumstances, it's just that it signifies a dearth of imagination and vocabulary in finding ways to express disapproval.
I think F-chants indicate a lack of intelligence and creativity (not to mention civillity). Perhaps it's not so surprising that they are more common of late since the trend in this country seems to be toward dumbing down.

I like Jay Wright. He wins with class and loses with class and never hesitates to give MU kudos when we beat his teams. I definitely agree with your comment about F-Bombing the refs.
I would say he is one of the biggest whiners in the game when it comes to the officiating. Whether he earns that right or not, I don't know, but it drives me nuts for some reason as we weren't 10 seconds into the game and he was crying. But at the end of the day, I don't think he cares if our students shout that stuff out or not, let alone hears it. He has heard everything I'm quite sure.
Not wanting to hear the students continually yelling a vulgar chant doesn't make one a prude. A person can use profanity sometimes personally and still not want to hear it chanted during sports events. And what other teams' fans do is irrelevant, what is this, a race to the bottom?
I'm disappointed. I think we can be more creative and do better.

It's like 3000 18-22 year olds. They have players like Bryce Aiken yelling at them to sit the F*** down and players talking smack to them. Coaches lose their cool too. I get that you don't like it, but it's just going to happen in competition with 18-22 year old kids. Has nothing to do with Marquette specifically and everything to do with College kids.

No, not wanting to hear a vulgar chant doesn't make one a prude.
But calling it "blood lust," suggesting it has some real world implications, and hopping aboard your high horse to say "Shame on you" makes one a total prude.
I know plenty of college students who don't drop the f bomb at every opportunity. I've been going to games for fifty years, and somehow managed to cheer top ten teams as a student without resorting to f bombs. The lowering of standards for public behavior is really disheartening.
And not that it's anyone's business, but I spent a career where crass language was quite common - I realized at some point that I didn't need to let that bleed into the other parts of my life.
But yet again so many people here only see black-and-white - wishing they didn't do it brings sneers.
I didn't like the chant, but not for the reasons listed here. May be a personal thing, but I feel like an "F you *insert school/player/coach*" should be reserved for a true rival, a team that you have earned the right to hate. When the students "F the badgers" I love it. When I was a student the "F the Irish" chants were great.
We haven't earned the right to hate Nova yet. They have straight up dominated us (and everyone else in conference) for damn near a decade. They are not our rivals, they are our superiors at this point. The F you chant yesterday felt amateurish and petty to me (but I'm not clutching my pearls over it either). Now if Shaka does lead us to the promised land and we are regularly competing with the Wildcats for the Big East crown....the hate will come, a rivalry will be born and then by all means, let the F bombs fly.
I remember coming straight from Sunday School to the Wake Forest game in 03 and a packed student section up to the rafters was chanting "F Wake Forest" an hour before the game. I thought it was cool especially since they were just a random non-conference opponent that was somehow on the schedule in February.
As far as the Nova chant goes, doesn't this thread get posted every year? The students always say that from what I recall. I cringe a little bit when I hear it since Nova is in no way shape or form a rival currently, but I'd rather have students engaged and actually at the game rather than the alternative (GeorgetownVsStJohns.jpg).

As a student at that game (and probably joining in the chant) it was the return leg of a home and home that made a nice little mini-rivalry centered around D-wade and Josh Howard. We had lost a tough one at their place in 2001-2002 (at that game too) where we were down by like 20 but we pulled it to within 2 late but Tom Crean inexplicably kept Cordell Henry off the court at the end (IMO lost us the game). Plus, they played pretty dirty on Wade down there - knocking him around quite a bit.
They were ranked when they came up too so it was a pretty important game - I think it was our best non-con win that year - and probably went a good way into getting and keeping us on the 3 line after losing to UAB in the first round of the CUSAT. Probably our second most important regular season game that year after @Louisville.

Right. I mean, it's not great. But it's been happening for years.
College sports isn't fun without a little bit of rivalry and disdain. That's why beating Wisconsin is sweeter than beating DePaul. No one walks away from a stadium saying, "Man, those fans really were respectful and exhibited good sportsmanship throughout the game," because that doesn't add to the experience. But people will notice if the building is rocking and the crowd is fired up. If that comes with some sophomoric humor, all the better in my humble opinion.

The real bush league fans are the boomers sitting around center court who, for as long as I have been attending games, remain nearly silent and refuse to stand up during even the most pivotal and emotional moments of games.
I thought the F Jay and Nova was lacking in creativity as well but what really irritated me was when the cameras panned to the student section and some student would use the obscene gesture of putting the tips of their thumbs together while extending just their index fingers to 10 and 2. Come on...we are way better then that

Refs called a flop on Slater earlier in the game. Complete weak sauce by the refs not to call the T on that play for the obvious second flop.
The whole flop rule is dumb. If refs called it right, it wouldn't be an issue since defenders are the ones being put out of place by it.

Very odd criticism.

You realize that Lenny engaged with Fluffy first, not the other way around? Personally, I'm glad Lenny has found someone to fill the void that Chicos left.

Where'd Chicos go? He was a mainstay going back to the old Rivals site.
What ever happened to "Ners"?

Dang, I was really hoping this thread was going to be a discussion of popular 90s band Bush. "Machinehead" is a pretty good song to get pumped up to

I hated the students doing that as well. One can be enthusiastic supporters of the team without resorting to vulgarity.
We were, guilty as charge, vulgar 79-83. TV had to lower fan volume and announcers did explain in many occasions that it had to be done due to obscenities. I don't recall if it was an editorial or what, but the school asked students to stop those types of chants and then it got worse next game....

Refs called a flop on Slater earlier in the game. Complete weak sauce by the refs not to call the T on that play for the obvious second flop.
Is it a T if the team flops a second time, or just if the same player does?

I thought the F Jay and Nova was lacking in creativity as well but what really irritated me was when the cameras panned to the student section and some student would use the obscene gesture of putting the tips of their thumbs together while extending just their index fingers to 10 and 2. Come on...we are way better then that
WTF was that! I thought the same thing. Totally offensive to make a 'W' with your fingers while wearing a Marquette shirt. Hoping that kid did not understand the effing crime he was committing. Unacceptable!

If anyone on the team does it a 2nd time, it is a F'ing T. Gutless refs call a warning, but swallow the whistle on the more egregious flop.

Yes, it was an obvious flop by Gillespie. And yes, the refs didn't have the stones to call it. And until they call those, it won't change anything.

Not the only student that I've seen either. They should be moved to the upper deck out of camera range

How is this possible?! I was given to believe that this vulgarity was a recent development and portended the fall of our nation.

100%, at least last game. He fell multiple times in the first half and I was wondering if he needed to change shoes.

At the Creighton game I and someone I was with were discussing how often he falls down. He goes down on the baseline just about every time he drives to the basket.

Are Kansas people too polite?
STUDENTS TOSSED FROM KANSAS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL GAME FOR CHANTING 'AIRBALL'
Several students at a Kansas high school were ejected from the school's basketball game Tuesday night for chants deemed to be poor sportsmanship.
Not an obscene chant or gesture, nor a racial remark — instead, it was a word that's commonplace in arenas across the country: "airball." Blue Valley Northwest High School did indeed eject students for chanting the phrase at a Blue Valley High School student-athlete, after he didn't hit net on a free throw attempt.
"A school administrator just came up and told us it was time to go, and we needed to get out," ejected student Chris Daniel said Thursday, via FOX4 News. "I understand what they're trying to do and enforce the rule so it's a friendly environment, but at the same time, I think there needs to be some change."
You wouldn't believe it, but there's actually a stated rule that prohibits the chant of "airball." Per Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) Rule 52, "airball" is one of the phrases that's labeled as poor sportsmanship.
Jeremy Holaday, KSHSAA Associate Executive Director, explained to FOX4 News why the rule is in place and why the chant warrants an ejection.
"If you can see something's brewing here, something as simple as yelling "airball," can set this off to the next level, that could create even worse damage," Holaday said. "We have to be mindful of that and stop it as soon as we can."
The Blue Valley School District released its own statement defending the rule that's in place.
"Students, families and our community are an important part of the "game day" experience for our high school activities and athletics. We expect that our school communities represent themselves and our schools in a positive way during these events," the statement reads. "This includes following KSHSAA expectations around sportsmanship, as well as the common expectations for student sections that Eastern Kansas League student leaders agreed upon at a student summit this fall."

Yep, and Jim Irwin/Max McGee used to take calls at halftime of Packers games, as did Eddie Doucette with the Bucks.
MU fans apparently are angels. From the Duke board.
QuoteI am a Duke grad , lifelong NC resident and lifelong Tarheel Hater. But Saturday and the treatment of Coach K was still surprising with the "F " you and absoltuely no recogniton of his greatness and the rivalrys greatness. . But then again , UNC has been on a moral decline since Dean left. Cheating , fraud - they were lucky to n ot get the NCAA death penalty.. I thought that the rivalry might bring out their better nature. - but it didnot.
When Dean Smith died, Duke held a great ceremony at half court - players , coaches and it spoke so well of the rivalry and of Coach Smith.
Todays Tarheels are the sports equivalent of a sea of Marjorie Taylor Greenes. No class or even shame about their pathetic appearance. Coach K deserved a better send off from his lifelong rival.

Dean Smith dying versus Coach K last game. I can think of almost no similarities but, alas, the poster has drawn them as equivalents.
If I was Coach K - there would be no better send off than for a bunch of UNC fans flipping me the bird and saying F U. Means I've done my job.
Counterpoint: Coach K is an pretty boy.

Yep.
Especially given that K's the one who had the ultimate F U -- a 20-point road victory over his archrival, one that solidified Duke's standing as a high seed while edging UNC closer to bubble territory.
Even if K wanted to respond with something verbal (and why would he?), all he'd have had to say was,
"Scoreboard!"

I'd rather see the Double Bird, than the W.
