Let's go now! I fully expect a W tonight.
Getting early high end potential Omax
Early on Justin is in Creighton mode
Drives to the iron - what the h?
OMax came to play.
Glad we are taking in in the paint
It's the hair.
The dunk accentuates the hair!
BAM!! Maybe that awakens JLew.
All day!! Attack, Attack, Attack. Lewis should plant his ass inside.
They have really gone away from just launching a three every time down.
JLew rocking the Sideshow Bob. I don't hate it. New 'do, new 'tude.
OK let's play like this the rest of the night. What a start, looking hungry for a win
Love the attack in the paint. Have we crap anything outside 8 feet yet?!

Yes, and this offensive style is much better suited for this collection of players.
The way they are playing today will open up good looks from the three
OHHH....YESSS!! And 1.
Fantastic start for the boys! Justin being a dude helps
Greg not puking on the bench tonight.
First fast start of the year. Hope the first of many.
Prov went zone and Greg got to the middle and found Daryl for a step in shot.
Good offense right now
Superb start and energy on both ends of the floor. it's as if they have read my posts refuting Tower on launching indiscriminate triples.
OSSA!! Patience works.
Not sure if it's just me but it seems that slower paced offensive MU >>> run and gun and shoot quickly with a ton of 3s MU
Just seems more organized with higher percentage shots, even though they are mostly twos
Providence looks like what Marquette usually looks like, scoring 10 points in 9 minutes. I like being on the other side!

Of course the driving lanes may only be open because teams are playing us to shoot the the three based on the film. Gotta find a balance.
Starting to force a couple 3s now.
Predictably not going in.
Keep pounding paint
I kind of would like to see Ellis get some of Mitchell's minutes to see if he can do something
Don't stop doing what got you here!
C'mon Stevie!!
Two silly fouls on jump shots. Can't lose focus.
The Stevie freshman mistakes are too many and too disproportionate to freshman positives
Is Kam supposed to be out long?
I do know why Shaka does not sit down a player after a stupid 3 point shot?
We are great for bailout fouls to ruin a great defensive possession at the end of the click when it was apparent they were in trouble.
Let's see what happens vs. the zone.
Nvm there's Kam
So much for that start.
We seriously cannot have 1 game where the officiating is even 50/50.
Everything on us and nothing on Omax blatantly getting bumped to the ground?
Cam and Greg should be shooting 3s if were shooting 3s!!

Prov went to zone, when MU up 14, MU has since clunked four three pointers.
Also fouled on three point shot and Prosper with moving pick and turnover.
So much for 14 point lead. Back to normalcy.
Good coaching job by Cooley going to zone.
Those darn refs again and again.....
Waiting too long to take a t-o. Got sped up and making terrible decisions after an excellent 8 mins. Move the freaking basketball, value the ball, and exercise patience. We can still attack the paint va the zone.
No movement against the zone, what do they work on after last game?
Every game MU has one guy who just kills them.
disapointed in the t shirts these guys are wearing. wear some darker shoes. dress like ball players. look ur best play ur best
That Kolek 3 was a puzzler.
Are the calls as bad as they seem to be in person?
Prov goes zone. MU is clueless... tons of turnovers. Just gave back the entire good start.
And, I can see no reason that Shaka recruited OMAX.
MU starts shooting three's and their lead evaporates. They were so much more efficient early. Stopped moving the ball.
7 to 2 in the foul department.........

Great defense!! They're under 5 on shot clock often
That was a good TO huddle
PG.....good to hear. I didn't see that but glad to hear. I couldn't stand Wojo not getting on the refs.
Holy sh it. Ref waited til Justin got wacked 3 times to finally call the foul

Hoping they realize that D was what got them in command, and can keep it up.

8891 is not someone I would recommend to learn the game from. Lot of negative guys getting excited tonight.
Finally, a game where we can put our collective feet on the neck of an opponent and not let them up. Can Shaka get done what Wojo couldn't? Seems like the past few years, big leads would get blown.
We got this.
Two nice dimes by TK.
I think Nate Watson played with Austin Croshere on the Providence team that beat MU in the tourney in the 90s

So we've got our best distributor with 8 assists,

our best shooter with 14 pts on 4/5 from 3,
several other guys filling their roles admirably,
and our best defensive effort of the year.

This is as good an overall team performance as we have had in quite some time. Great cohesion on both ends of the floor and tremendous unselfishness. It was very frustrating and always made me wonder "why not just slip a pass there Markus?!?"
Then I realized he was a very very tiny dude. I've never played basketball at a high level but I can imagine that it's very hard for a little guy like Markus to be able to have the vision and ability necessary to make those passes like Kolek can.
Markus was clearly wired/taught/gifted to score, not to find the open guy.
We've got another little guy coming next year and we will see how his passing on drives to the paint compare to Koleks, but Tyler's vision and ability to make those reads and the perfect pass are an incredible gift

If Shaka saying "Don't foul, don't give up offensive rebounds, don't give up threes" is "talking strategy" then you and I actually agreed for years!
There was nothing slow about the offense tonight. Over 80 possessions this game (would rank #1 in the country if that was our average). We were a lot slower in our three most recent losses. Difference was that our guys were able to beat their defenders both on and off the ball and get into the key for easy shots and kick outs.
Edit: Whoops. I did the possessions calculation in my head and messed it up. The actual number was 64, which would rank towards the bottom of D1 if we averaged it. I'd have to watch the game again but my recollection was that we weren't playing deep into the shot clock that often. We did make Providence play deep into the shot clock often which may have driven the possession numbers down.

Efficient and in control for sure. I think that was what felt like a "slowdown" for lots.
The offense sure does feel a lot different, that's for sure.
Apparently it wasn't "slowed down" in terms of possessions, but last nights offense just seemed so different. Maybe it's just because it was working, but I feel like Shaka has tweaked some things with regards to shot selection and playing more in control and thru better passing more interior play.
One example I can give us that off the top of my head I don't really recall more than 2 really bad and rushed 3P attempts- one was Kolek that he really rushed and wasn't opened, shouldn't have taken it. Another was Kam from way downtown and he's allowed to do that every so often, he made it.
Doctor
The big difference was making the shots. Once they started making the shots the game got easier. They have been so tight shooting the ball that I am surprised we have not blown out in ten games. For the first time last night they started quickly, and the game slowed down for the guys.
MU focused on getting to the rim, both off of the dribble, and off the pick and roll. Providence was a step or two slow all night, both in P &R defense and recovering to shooters. Maybe staying in the Midwest after their Depaul game left them flat. Who knows? MU attacked from the start and Providence had no answers.
Nolongerwarriors didn't post in the game thread 😂

The pace yesterday was 64. MU's average is 73. The D1 average is 69. MU made a concerted effort to feed the paint in the half court where they outscored PC 38-28. It was just more efficient (1.37). As Badger Butch pointed out, MU was running their offense more with a purpose.
Granted, part of this slower pace was driven by PC's tendencies and MU's defense, but MU was much more patient offensively (with a few exceptions like when PC switched to a zone in the 1H). It was also MU's lowest turnover rate and highest OR% rate of the season.

I would love to see what our average possession length was last night. We've taken so many shots this year with less than 10 seconds off the shot clock, I feel like we're better in that 12-18 range. I think much of the low possession total last night was Providence playing slow both because that's what they do (#305 in average offensive possession length) and what we force (#320 in average defensive possession length).

Granted, part of this slower pace was driven by PC's tendencies and MU's defense, but MU was much more patient offensively (with a few exceptions like when PC switched to a zone in the 1H). It was also MU's lowest turnover rate and highest OR% rate of the season.
So it seems my eye test was accurate then, after all.
