Yah ...

I don’t think MU is having much luck selling tickets.  Lots of “ specials “ and lots of years of Apathy.

Here’s an example:

Last week my wife and I tried to find taker for MU v UCONN.  It was a late start, but very good opponent.

We tried 12 to 15 people... alums,
Random people... fans ... but
No Takers for 2 good lower level seats.

That’s a sad commentary on where
MU hoops is these days. #fact

Yeah, it will take some time and some winning.  Much easier to be motivated to go if you think your team has a pretty good chance to win.  Hopefully by the end of the year that will be the case.  Right now not so much and with Covid, even less.

I can tell just from the number of empty seats around ours that they must have a lot fewer season ticket holders than two years ago.

I don’t think it helps that so many games are at inconvenient times, like 6PM and 8:15 on weeknights, which are either too early or too late for working people, including my 2 alumni daughters who usually alternate going to games with me.

11 AM on NYD isn’t the best either. I’m not sure if we will be going tomorrow, but I wouldn’t even waste my time trying to find someone to use them if we don’t go. (Anyone who might be interested in two free seats in section 222, row 5 (upper mid court) if we decide not to go can send me a PM.)

As much as we have enjoyed going to games for the last 20 years, we are talking about giving up the season tickets and just buying for some single games.

Build that 10K on campus arena baby.

Defending national champion and current #1 team in the country Baylor is building a new arena that holds 7K fans.

7 PM on weeknights would be nice.

I understand that times  are now dictated by TV networks because that’s where the money is. The people in the stands are secondary.

If all games are televised and are played at odd times, more fans are going to choose to watch more games on TV.

Perfect. Weed out the fake fans.

I have been at every MU home game since the 2003-2004 season (including those bunny OOC buy games) except for a handful when I have been out of the state. Our 3 daughters went to every single home game (with rare exceptions) while they were students,  and the 2 who live in the area still go to games with me.

If that makes us “fake fans”, so be it. But, if I were in the MU Athletic Department, I would be concerned that some of the “fake fans” who have attended games almost religiously for the better part of 20 years are thinking about cutting back on the number of games they attend. They might be seeing the attendance at some of those games with announced crowds of 13,000 (where the number of people actually there is substantially lower than that) drop even further.

Here is the 2003-04 game schedule.

https://gomarquette.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule/2003-04

Home game start times:  8:00, 8:00, 8:00, 8:00, 7:00, 5:30, 7:00, 8:00, 6:00, 11:00, 7:00, 8:00, 12:00, 6:00, 12:00

IMO people aren't going to the games for a number of reasons....television...Covid...apathy of some sort.  But game times doesn't look to be one of them.

Of course it isn’t the main reason for most people, but it is a significant factor for some. It isn’t going to affect students, who stay away for a lot of other reasons. And I don’t really care much myself because I’m retired, though I prefer 7 PM starts over sitting around in the early evening waiting to go to the game.

But game times can be important for people based on where they live and their work situations, and 7 PM seems to strike the best balance on weeknights.  I would assume that’s why the Brewers start their weeknight games at 6:40 or 7:10, and MU and the Bucks  to start their games that aren’t on one of the national TV networks at 7.

I can’t imagine that MU would ever schedule a game at 11 AM it weren’t for national TV considerations and/or needing to finish a game in time to get out of the way for the Bucks to take over.

BTW, I note that your list of start times includes several  Friday and Saturday nights, where later start times are not a factor for people who are otherwise concerned about having to get up early for work the next day.

Every game has "national TV considerations" because every game will be televised nationally when all is said and done.  But when it comes down to it, willingness to go to a 7:00 game, but not an 8:00 game because it's too late is a bit weak.  Brewer games routinely last past 10:00 with a 7:00 first pitch.  An 8:00 tip is likely to finish earlier.

I will also point out that declines in attendance are happening all over college basketball.  This isn't just a Marquette trend that can be attributed to apathy.  Average attendance saw a more than 10% decline between 2009 and 2019.  My guess is that the pandemic accelerated those declines both because people don't want to go out, and because people didn't go last year and didn't really miss it.

Is some of this due to lack of recent success?  No doubt.  But these are issues that college athletic departments are dealing with all over.

Maybe you should talk to my daughters who get up at 6 AM to go to work.

They are often “willing” to go to 8 PM (really 8:10 or 8:15 games) but they much prefer the 7 PM starts.

They don’t go to weeknight Brewers games either, which is why we get a weekend 10 pack.

Maybe we are the only group that is considering cutting back on full season tickets and just buying single game tickets with more attractive opponents and start times. As long as tickets with decent seats are so easy to come by I suspect that we aren’t alone.

Lol. Guy can’t get rid of tickets in December for CBB and he thinks #mubb has a problem. Did you see some of the promotions the Bucks were running the past 6 weeks?  Did you check Seat Geek for Bucks games?

I assure you MU Athletics knows where it is.

Game times will be dictated by TV.  If an hour later screws up your bedtime so much, well sorry.  If you’re in a job where a 6pm start a few times a year is impossible, I’d recommend going to MU for college next time.

As I said and recognized several posts above.

I’ve been around and going to MU games a lot longer than 2005. I also think the NBE contract with Fox led to many more games on national cable channels.

In the 90’s I worked downtown and went to a lot of games right from work. I wouldn’t have been doing that for 8 PM starts.

I wonder how some of the season ticket holders who live farther away from downtown feel about start times, and whether some of them have caused them to miss games.

I think I addressed all of your concerns about my personal situation in earlier posts.

I appreciate your suggestion that I go to MU “next time”. But, my alma maters (which stack up favorably) prepared me very nicely for my career and at 70 I don’t anticipate going to college again.

Yeah our car was stolen today right out of the Fiserv lot.  And our Uber was shot at 6 times on the way home.  Then we were car jacked just before we made to the Shorewood city line.  And we can’t identify the car jackers bc they were wearing N95 masks.  It’s a whole thing.

Hopefully we can recover our car by Tuesday.  Also anyone know if you can bring in pillows and sleeping bags. Those 8pm tips are MURDER.

Fairly empty arena today.

I imagine a fair amount has to do with COVID and a large number of no shows have to do with the state of the program and its losing ways. Likely to continue for a while.

I would personally love to go every week, but driving 2 hours makes that difficult and I'm not going to be driving to Milwaukee if the team isn't going to be competing for anything meaningful.

I’m not down on Shaka or the team at all.  I anticipated this losing and am still watching every game On TV live or after the fact (even after a loss). But your second paragraph rings true to me because if the team was winning I would be much more willing to drive 3-4 hours to a game.  It’s just the reality for out of state fan's.  I would go to 3-4 games a year with my family or friends during the Buzz years.  That has slipped to 1 or maybe two a year during the Wojo years.  I plan on attending 1-2 this year.

I’m confident there are many fans like me out there.

Don't forget Winter Break.  The arena was missing a couple thousand students who are on break (not in town), and the ones in town decided 11:00 am is too early to go to a game most of their friends were missing after staying up half the night celebrating New Year's Eve.

MU had a similar situation on New Year’s Day in 2011 (which was a Saturday as well) against West Virginia. That one started at 10:00 AM!! Streets were empty with virtually no traffic that morning.  Was a good win for MU that day with a nice performance from Jae Crowder in his first BE game.

We went a stretch where we played BE games at home on January 1 three consecutive years.  The one you mention was the first, and the only with a pre-noon tip.

This was the last.

They beat Nova in between.

11 am, definitely, especially for two CST schools. But that's on Fox Sports, not MU.
Bucks were at 5:30pm at FF on NYD. MU had to play at 11am.

About 10,000 people made it through the early alarm (and the gun shots & car-jackings and the communist mask policy) on Jan 1 to enjoy a Double OT Big East game.  And while 10K is low for MU, that's a really good crowd for a lot of Power 5 teams and at 11am on NYD, that's a good NBA crowd.

Fox Sports pays us a lot of money and that affords us private jets, unlimited recruiting budgets, constantly upgraded facilities.  For those of us who made it out, I know we all enjoyed a fun game and even better post game.  Buck Bradley's was festive and packed.  By 3pm it had the feeling of good old fashion mid February Saturday.

We're never going to fix TV, might as well order a Bloody Mary and enjoy it.

The gametime had been TBA since the schedule was announced.  Just happen to be looking at the schedule today and noticed that the time had been set.

The original Big East schedule in September said 7 or 8pm. 9pm. Holy crap!

That's pretty much a guarantee of weak ratings. It'll end around 11 pm for most MU fans, and midnight for most Nova fans. Stupid.

It should be a solid lead in on FS1. US vs Honduras for WCQ match. Yet, 9pm still blows.

I bought the $20 tickets before seeing that ( I don’t know when it was changed). Not sure if we will go, that’s a late night for driving back to Chicago.

At least we don't have to worry about the game before going long and delaying the tip.  Soccer games (that aren't knockout stage games in tournaments) are always done under two hours from the opening kick.

As long as 7 CST or earlier is the opening kick and not the start of a half hour of pregame chatter and analysis.

For those trying to get X tickets for Sunday, I had no luck on Fevo, but after 10 minutes on hold w/the ticket office, all is well.  Got my three, sec 114.  Try that if the promotional site is giving you fits.

Side note.  Judging by the guy's tone at the sales office, there's just a teeeeny bit of pent-up demand for a winner.  Nice problem to have.

I'm hung up with a stress fracture in my foot so can't make it up for the game on Sunday.

If anyone wants 2 uppers (221, like 5 rows from the top, aisle and the seat next to it) I am willing to part with them for the price of free.

PM me.

When I purchased the student section tickets to upgrade my seats over a break it took a day or two but they were there in my ticket account before the games.
