Compare Tyler Kolek to a player of the past. Only criteria: It can't be a white guy.
His number one frosh comp on KenPom was Mike Hughes of Georgia Southern
Brunson.

Jeremy Lin, Harvard.
Can't be a white guy, eh? Um ... Eminem?
Seriously, Brunson was the first guy who jumped into my head a couple days ago, and I posted a photo of him yesterday in a Kolek discussion.
Heady, athletic enough, in control, looks for others first but willing to take the big shot.
If Kolek has 75% the impact on our program that Brunson had on Nova's, I will be over-the-moon happy. It's probably not fair to ask that of him, though.
I also think Morsell is this team's leader, but a very good team has more than one leader, and Kolek seems to have those traits as well.
I still like my white chocolate comparison, but I'll go with a bigger Mo Acker for this excercise.
This was the official Mr. Dodds blender :

That's racist. ^^^^^^^
ND sucks
Cassius Winston
He has a touch of Ed Cota in him with the vision and methodology of the passing.
A very poor man's Ed Cota.
I thought this was going to be a thread about a projected increase in Tyler's NIL revenue after last night's performance.
Obviously, Kolek has a looooooooong way to go to be anywhere as good as Brunson.
But the comp is great. Their styles and game very similar. Even ignoring the lefty part of it.
Since we're talking about a lefty point guard, I'll say Goran Dragic.
Ners
I usually end up comparing Ja Morant to Tyler Kolek.
Kyle Lowry
Diener chimes in but with a white guy ;D

Brunson comparison not bad, but he also had strong post-up game, terrific in the lane with the classic nova jump stop, and had an effective teardrop floater, none of which I have seen from TK.
Lin comparison solid, though, again, Lin was finishing at the rim more than TK.
Best non-white comp I can think of is Sui Generis.
I should have said 70% of Brunson. And that isn't bad
Pacers George Hill.

Illinois version of Deron Williams
Deron was a brute who could bully opponents, especially by the time he was a junior. But yes, similar games. The sophomore Deron usually preferred to set up his teammates but also could score when necessary, so that's similar to Kolek, and Deron wasn't a freak athlete either. But he was thicker for sure.
As long as we're talking former Illini PGs, Frank Williams had a fairly similar game, though Kolek looks a little shiftier so far.
Obviously Kolek isn't as good as Brunson was, at least not yet, and Wright ran a different offense, but I still like that comparison. Lin too. So far they're my two faves.
Yeah, I'm liking this comparison with the Heady Steady Brunson.
The first name that popped into my head was Levance Fields from Pitt. Tyler plays more downhill but both were/are less than elite athletes that really set up their teammates well. It's been a long time since I watched Levance Fields though.

Not even Jo Jo White?
OK ... how 'bout Mo Cheeks?
We can only hope!
Tony Miller with a better shot.
Once played pickup with Tony and a bunch of pro's and retired pros. Went to set a screen for him and he waved it off... he said "one less guy I can pass it to". All he ever did was hit the open man.

Two-plus years later, and I'm feeling pretty spot-on with this comp.
I am pretty proud of my Brunson comp, as well.
I guess my Darryl Dawkins comp was off base.
Johnny Dawkins would have been closer.
Has anyone said Butch Lee cause I'm saying Butch Lee.

Isn't "grit" one of Kolek's main attributes? Or is "plays with chip on shoulder" different than "grit"?
Or maybe one has to enjoy cheesy grits?

I was in Radio Doctors in the 80's when the New Jersey Nets walked in in their matching sweats. Being even more of a basketball nerd then than I am now, I recognized who they were, not just that they were NBA players. Kelvin Ransey, Michael Ray Richardson, Mickey Johnson, Buck Williams. But nothing prepares you to see Darryl Dawkins walk through a door. The largest human being I had seen in person in the real world. Not just on an NBA floor. Just immense.
I let them all be and watched amazed from a respectful distance.

Largest human being I've ever seen: Mark Eaton.
In addition to being 7-foot-4 and 300-ish pounds, he had a massive head with a full beard.

Very different players. But they're both white guards.
There's no perfect comp, obviously, but Brunson has been the best comp all along IMHO.
Jimmy Jackson has used the Scott Skiles comparison more than once.
Yes I know Skiles is white..........but sometimes it's ok to compare a white guy to a white guy.......if the pigment fits wear it!

I do see some Skiles in TK's game. Don't see any of Gillespie, Arcidiacono, McConnell.

Sure, but he would be a lottery pick if they re-did that draft knowing what we know now. If you're an NBA front-office and you think TK is going to turn out like Brunson, you draft him a lot higher than Brunson originally was.

Steve Nash
I've thought this too, but I'm always reluctant to make comparisons to an all time great.
Tyler and Nash are similar size and similar in terms of athleticism. I think they have comparable basketball IQ and court vision as well as passing skills.
I saw Nash play in person when he was on the Suns and watched him drain 31 3's in a row during warm ups. I don't think he hit the rim with any of them. Just pure, it was incredible. Tyler doesn't have anywhere near as pure a shot as Nash did. Doesn't mean he can't improve and develop his shot, but it's not there yet and probably will never be.
This is as good a place as any to ask this. Has anyone noticed the national media - namely ESPN - has a couple of talking heads who pronounce his name ko-LEK? I've heard it on two different occasions now by two different people. National player of the year candidate - get it right.
How about F-em to Damon Stoudamire and Kam to Salim Stoudamire.
