I was curious if any scoopers invest in art or antiques? It has piqued my interest for some time but I'm always a little hesitant.
How much do you have to "invest" to make it an investment?
My wife and I have bought a select few pieces of "not cheap" art that we enjoy. No originals, but some rare-ish prints, or giclee's directly from the artist. Though again, we're not doing it necessarily as an investment, but rather because we enjoy them.
But that's really they key. Unless you're putting together a museum or collection to pass down to family, it's not a "good" investment - in terms of buying/selling for a profit (unlikely, unless you've stumbled upon an cheap amazingly rare piece).

I dunno. I own a few pretty valuable paintings and lithographs. I also own a 1st edition Ulysees which I would categorize as a "amazingly rare" item. I can't imagine this book ever losing value....it's too bad it's not signed. Anyway, for the fk of it let's say you invest 100K in art vs stocks?
If you've got a $75k+ book, you're out of my league. And don't share your address on here :)
But I guess that's what I'm saying, if you enjoy having it, then it's not the $, it's something you appreciate. I think art investors can make some good coin. But then you're an art dealer. If you buy and don't sell, it's not an investment.
Now, do some start as collectors, and move to become a dealer? Probably. And it's like most other jobs, if you're good at it, and/or work hard at it, you can be successful.
So I guess to your original question, I don't invest in art/antiques, I only buy some.

It's not worth that much. If it was in perfect condition it's conceivable at auction it would be in the 75K+ range. If it was signed? Perhaps 600K. I will forgive my grandma for reading it and giving me a substandard and unsigned copy. WTF? :)

I celebrate the entire Hunter Biden on coke collection.
In a previous life phase with a previous wife we collected art and antiquities as a hobby. Gave it all up (save one painting) in the divorce without complaint and much prefer a clutter free life. Probably the most we ever spent on anything specific was $5k, but the total collection would have been over $60k. I don't regret doing it and don't miss it.

Are you saying I should not buy his collection Ziggy? I thought he was the next Van Gogh?
