The shiftiest player in HS!
I don't see any vitals. Is he a thin man?

Fantastic news. Expecting him to make a big impact here. The fact that's he under 6ft and still in the top 100 leads me to believe he is very talented.

I think the difference between Mr. Jones and the previous 5'10 PG stories at MU is that he is known as a defensive plus whereas the the ones under Wojo were known for their offensive prowess. That doesn't make him better or worse (though I seriously doubt he'll be as good as Howard or Rowdy), just different.

Peach Jam highlights from a few weeks ago. He's very quick and good handles. As an added bonus, he destroys a guy in a man bun at the 10 second mark of this video.

I like kids with prime-time quicks, handles, and what I would call overall bounce. What's with the pessimism?? The young man appears to check these boxes and will only add to his current arsenal.

I think the era of recruiting just combo guards is over as well (excluding The Engine). Now, let's get a shooting guard and a big.
Looks like a talented, exciting PG. Thrilled to have him at our alma mater.

The way Shaka is building the roster, defensively I think you can get away with a guy like Jones. Strong enough to hold his own through screens, and with the rest of roster skewing switchable there should be enough help if needed.
If he can get that outside shot cooking it could be a lot of fun.

All I care about is if the guy can ball Scoop Snoop. I am not really biased towards shorter players. Believe me I would like 12 Dwyane Wade's every year. What bothers me are those that besmirch diminutive people for no reason whatsoever or automatically assume they can't play.

No offense taken at all! We also shouldn't pigeon hole players based on size. Mr. Jones plays a much different game than say Rowsey, Howard, Acker, or Hutch. I like quickness and blow by speed. The ability to create, and at the same time disrupt defensively, can lead to tremendous success . I see a young man with excellent handles and comfortable attacking downhill. We haven't had this in awhile scoop snoop. :)

You hit on quite a number of often missing things that drove me up the wall during Wojo's reign. If, despite a solid defensive effort, an opponent scores on Marquette, at least make him
earn it! Although I remain very cautious in my expectations this coming season, it is going to be fun to watch the team gel, especially the defense. I think some fans view defense as boring, especially if the final score is low. I love great defensive teams. Remember Chris Beard's TT in the NC vs. UVA? They were ferocious!

Ferocity a.k.a. tenacity pumps me up on the defensive end. I wish there were more videos of the real Muggsy driving guys nuts when they brought the ball up the court. Rex Chapman said the only guys he couldn't guard were Magic and Gary Payton. :)

I admired Derrick for his attitude and hard work during his time at Marquette.
I look forward to seeing him play at MU. He seems like the kind of dynamic 2 way PG that has been absent for some time.
His size makes me wonder about big picture things like how Coach Smart is going to defend the high pick and roll. And whether young Mr. Jones is going to be able to fight through a Villanova pick to stay on their next Brunson and not switched on to their next Robinson-Earl.
I am looking forward to it. He looks like a Warrior.

Two in the NIT. That's fair. But a doughnut in the NCAAs. I should have asked the question more specifically.
You are correct on Markus being only one player in a team sport. No doubt. But a lot of that goes to coaching, as Markus was made THE one player on the team by Wojo. That said, be it one player or a floor full of them, being able to shoot the lights out but not stop anyone, has not usually been a successful strategy. Again, very fun to watch but not a strategy that is the foundation for winning. My opinion.
https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/markus-howard-1.html
Markus Howard DRtg improved 14 pp100 once Rowsey left. Rowsey was a bad defender, Markus got a rep as a bad defender because he was of similar stature and played with Rowsey for two years. Once Rowsey was gone, Markus was more than serviceable on that end.
IMHO, major difference between Markus and Rowsey on D.
Markus became a decent defensive player. He usually stayed in front of his man, he became quite good at drawing charges, he had deflections, he closed out on shooters, etc. He was limited by his size; when he closed out, it wasn't the same as a 6-7 guy closing out. But he was a willing defender who didn't embarrass himself on D, especially as a senior.
Rowsey? Loved watching him become a dangerous offensive player, but he barely even bothered trying to play defense.

That's not a Markus Howard problem. That's a Wojo problem. You can definitely "build a winner" on Howard with the right coaching.

To be fair he had one opportunity as "the player". It's disengenuous to say he was the go to guy on the 2017 year. That team collectively got there and collectively crapped the bed.
So as "the guy" he went 0-1 in ncaa tournament appearances

The biggest problem with Rowsey and Howard was Markus ended up defending the opponent's best guard every night. That's not a recipe for success.
Though "not a recipe for success" describes Wojo's tenure on the whole.

Kind of in line with your thinking, but I think that a huge problem was that Wojo never really figured out that your couldn't play both of them together for an extended period. To some extent you can hide one sub 6' player on defense, but if you roll with two of them together for 25+ish mpg, you're going to get burned.
Would have been somewhat difficult to justify at the time, but I really wonder how that 17-18 season would have gone if instead of them both playing 30+ mpg, they each would have only played 25 mpg with 5 together. I also think that if Haani doesn't transfer midseason, we're a tourney team that year, but Wojo had more than enough time after that transfer to figure it out, and he never did.

The sum total of his strategy was to get highly ranked recruits and extort them to play hard. That was it. He didn't figure out because that was the beginning and end of his strategy.

From the little bit we saw on film, our new PG is quicker than Derrick, and with a far better handle. But yes, I definitely see some similarities, too.
There are some similarities, but unlike Derrick (or Junior for that matter) he appears to be able to go to his left when the occasion calls for it.
