Those type of players don't come to the US for college. You're more likely to get an unpolished big man with a ton of potential. Great shooting guards with size play pro there and then get drafted or sign with the NBA. Other than the Aussie guards that went through St Mary's, I struggle to think of any at the high major level

Maybe...I see your point. How do we get to where we need to be by 2022-3 or 2023-4? I will concede one transition year. But we must get back on track quickly and I believe we can. It's been a horror show, no disputing that. It's time to get this program back to an elite level.
At one point in time, the key to that kingdom was Junior College... St Mary's Aussie pipeline has had a bigger impact on their rugby program. They are one of the best in North America every year.

But how many people actually follow collegiate rugby?
Prior to the Aussie influence there, St Mary's had been to the postseason twice in the modern era. Starting with Daniel Kickert (who is still one of the programs leading scorers), then Patty Mills, Dellavadova, Emmett Naar, then Jock Landale, they had a string of stud All WCC imports and it completely changed their program to the tune of 7 NCAAs (including a S16) and 7 NITs in the last 15 years. That's a remarkable change.
Too bad our Aussie experiment wasn't as successful

No...it is way past the time to get the program back to an elite level. Now cue up the "Al ain't walking through that door anytime" reminders. But wait, we did have shlubs like the Lonesome Cowboy and Tom Terrific walk through that door. Sure hope Chief Brodie can turn us around as quick as Al did.

Can we not get to a Buzz like level? Meaning a top 4/5 seed consistently with the ability to do some damage in the tournament? I think we can ww if we construct the right rosters.

Buzz only got a top 4/5 seed twice in 6 years. Two three seeds.

Al needed 4 years to get Marquette to the NCAAT. 3 years to get to the NIT which was more significant back then than it is now. I think 3 years is a reasonable expectation for Shaka to take us dancing.
For every Bogdanovic out there, there are a dozen Harry Froling's, or Andy Van Vliet's. Unless you've got a great international assistant/scout, or a great international pipeline, you're more likely to get the latter.

We'll be dancing in under 3 years. I have no doubt
Hell, I've got numerous bets with friends that we'll be dancing this year and two other bets we'll be in the final 4 within 4
I would like to see Shaka test the waters for a Euro player or two. My favorite Gonzaga player was Karnowski, a huge Pole who had great under the basket moves. His teammates really liked the guy but not his choice of music when he showered. Reportedly, he would blast Polish rap music and sing along loudly, stomping to the beat. Michigan had/has the Wagners and there are players from Africa and other areas in CBB. SH's Mamu is American born but was raised in the country of Georgia. In addition to Africa and Canada, MU could be well served with an occasional under the radar Euro player.
Anyone know how other schools conduct their searches? I doubt that the coaches spend a lot of time there. Perhaps Marquette alums playing in Europe could earn some extra money scouting for MU.
They follow college rugby at St Mary's! On a basketball note, I think that maximizing the transfer portal is the strategy for the future. It would be nice to get a decent foreign player once in a while, but as many have already pointed out, that seems to be a crap shoot.

Shaka will have done a spectacular job if he gets to the NCAAT this season with a young team of not-super-highly ranked recruits. I think it will be exciting to watch how this group grows from November to February.

I really liked Karnowski as well. Unfortunately I think plates (plural) of pierogies ( plural) got the best of him. I have some sympathy because pierogies are awesome, but I think he could have exercised a bit more discipline. But I digress, back to your original point. I feel that we should have a solid Euro/Int scout if we don't already. Lots of good players across the globe even if we can't snag a Bogdanovic level guy.

Look, God and maybe Shaka are the only people who really know what we have for next year. We could be lights out and surprise enough people to make the NCAA. We all hope that's the case. Or we could be flat-out awful because our new guys don't gel.
As much as we all
HATE the Red Rodent to the west -- and we do, we know -- what we have is a team that looks a lot like a Bo Ryan/Greg Gard team. Lot's of potentially over-achieving unhearlded recruits coupled with a few guys who have some experience. The key is to play within ourselves, to play our game and to win the games we're supposed to win.
Look, a lot of you wanted Wojo's head. You got it. As much as I hate rebuilding, that's what happens when you mount a Blue Devil's head above your mantle place.

If pierogies are the reason he could stuff the ball under the basket, Marquette should add them to the players' diets. I loved the way he kept the opponent guessing as he positioned himself under the basket. With his back to the basket, would he spin around and dunk or would he do a quick, perfectly timed behind the back pass to a teammate who ran behind him who scored easily? It was always fun to watch.
Anyway, Muggsy, thanks for starting this thread. I get jealous when I see some of the great Euro players other college teams have snagged.

I felt he was extremely sluggish in the championship game. I forgot what those Polish pastries are called but he may have thrown down 2 or 20 before taking the floor. A few pierogies are just fine Scoop Snoop, I'm just guessing he got carried away. :)

Maybe pierogies, maybe prescription meds- pain killers. He had some serious, excruciating back problems that I believe required surgery.

Sir, this is an Arby's.
I know international recruiting sounds great but there are numerous reasons why almost no one does it
1) Very limited pool of players. Many of the top players are professionals playing for club teams. Most are sign as 14 to 16 year olds.
2) To recruit internationally an assistant needs to go over to Europe/Australia. That's not an overnight trip. Most have to spend at least a week to 10 days to make it worthwhile. Add in at least two days (maybe 4) to travel back and forth that's two weeks away from the program and not working with current players. The NCAA also limits the number of coaches that can be on the road recruiting at any given time and there is a limited window. Do you want to use up that resource with 4 days flying? In addition. You need to have a coach that is willing to be gone for weeks at a time
3) Recruiting overseas is not cheap. It's the basic cost benefit analysis. Is it worth the time and money to get a player who may have a comp in N. America?
4) Gonzaga and St Mary's are the best examples of programs that do the best. Lloyd was the point person for the Zags. It will be interesting to see if they continue although looking at their last couple of recruiting classes they probably don't need to any more. St Mary's has well established ties but again are any of the guys they are getting program changers? Comes back to the same question. Is it worth the time and money to get the guys St. Mary's is getting taking resources from the program that can be used elsewhere.
I should also add. It doesn't hurt the draft stock by playing overseas as compared to playing in the NCAA.
Davidson traditionally is as international as it gets. I think one needs contacts globally. Once a reputation is established for international players, it may gets easier to recruit them.

When Al took over we were coming off of a 5-21 season, freshmen weren't eligible and players almost never transferred. Quick turnarounds are much easier now.

Look at my post. I never said Milwaukee itself is an issue. Just that Euro guards with good size and shooting aren't available to college teams. All the Zags have been big men like Sabonis and Karnowski. Players of the Bogdanovic mold, even if not that good, thrive in Euro ball till they are ready for the NBA looks
