Sending him the best. Great kid. Best of luck at your next stop Jamal! You were always one of my faves.
Bummer. But this means he wants to play another year in college. Maybe Shaka can reel him back in.

I love Jamal, but let Shaka do his thing with his own players.
Bummer - he gave a ton. Hope for the best for him.
I think a couple of our players could really benefit from a fresh start. Cain getting the extra year is one.
Smart move to enter the portal and look at all options. Doesn't mean he can't come back.
Where do these guys think they are going that would be better than playing for cash in Europe somewhere? Unless maybe they are just keeping their options open.

This can't be said enough. With any other candidate we hired, including Moser, I would want to keep more of the current roster. With Shaka, I feel like he can take advantage of this years transfer chaos and come out the other end with the players he wants that are eligible right away.
Anyways, good luck to Jamal wherever he ends up
Jamal was a good kid. Wish him the best.
I think another year will serve Jamal well, wherever he lands.
Marquette's guards were turnover prone, not able to create off the dribble often, and didn't shoot from 3 very well. We need a huge revamping at the guard position in order to take advantage of the talent we have up front.
Jamal is a very high quality young man. Sorry to see him go.
Jamal will be an excellent addition for any program.

Maybe they need another year in college to get their undergrad or even graduate degrees. What better way than to be on scholly somewhere, playing the game they love, without the responsibility of having to make a living to support themselves?
As for Jamal, I wish him great fortune.
Seems players have got the message on whether they are invited to stick around or not.
Good luck Jamal.
schools are not obligated to renew the scholarships of seniors who were getting an additional year so perhaps MU and/or Shaka let them know that was going to be the case. We had already signed players to replace them and having 16 scholarship players on the roster would be pain in the ass for any coach so it's best that they move on for both parties.
Really interesting for Cain. If I were he, unless he was smitten with playing for Shaka, I would absolutely put my name into the portal and see what schools bite.
It's not going to improve his "draft position" .. but it'd be an all-expenses paid way to experience someplace new and get a year of grad school paid for. -- And he's not really hurting MU, he did his time.
Good for him.
Was this a decision he made AFTER the Shaka hiring?

I think theres still a solid chance he doesnt even play college next year.
There is no harm in putting your name in the portal for your "bonus" year and seeing what opportunities arrive.

I wouldn't think a year of grad school is worth the opportunity cost of a year of playing professionally overseas? Kids obviously do this type of thing for a reason, but I always think they have a lot to lose when there playing years are limited and the money they make will be minimal.

You can go to grad school when you're 22 or 42. Earning money playing pro basketball has a shelf life.

It was sitting atop the fax machine at The Al, hey?
Good luck to Jamal.
Always felt there was more available to his game than he displayed and never quite got the situation needed to squeeze out all of his talent.
Expecting Greg to leave now. Just seems like it'd be tough to have all of your friends go and there's nobody within 2yrs his age left.
Could be wrong, but just my take
I wish all of the guys well. They did their best for MU and represented the school well. Now it is time for Shaka to fill those holes and upgrade the team. In the long run, this is a win-win for everybody.
With regard to playing overseas, Dr. B made the point in another thread that COVID may still be an issue overseas - especially in Europe - that could limit opportunities and make it a less safe playing environment. Maybe more prudent to play another year in college.

Agree. Banking on the ability to play overseas at the moment is not a great option.
Thank you, Jamal. Good luck.
I think Cain had the most raw talent on the roster. If he had Buzz type coach, he would have benefited dramatically.
I wish Jamal nothing but the best

Completely agree.

Happened yesterday but have yet to see a post here.
Jamal cain enters transfer portal. MU higher ups state they weren't going to respect the extra year for seniors?

But I kept being told these guys are done with college.
I wish Jamal the best. Realistically, no matter what his plans/desires are - putting himself out there is the right decision unless he's already dead set in playing professionally. Which he and Koby clearly are not. Based on the timing, I would guess this means Shaka let Jamal and Koby know they should move on.
I think Jamal Cain was a good and at times a great player and always a great representative for Marquette. I think he has significantly more upside that what we saw developed at Marquette. Thank you Jamal and whatever you do I truly wish you great success! You will always be part of the Marquette family.
Why wouldn't they play the market? If I were in their position I'd do the same. I do the same thing to my employer all the time. I'm always in the transfer portal.
