Title: The Standard Of Excellence That MU Seeks
Post by: Herman Cain on March 25, 2021, 07:58:19 PM
Our new coach at MU  has to be able to coach at a level higher than our league competition. I think that is the standard by which we are selecting the coach, all the marketing puffery set aside.

Most major conferences have gone to the 20 game conference schedule. For the Big East , we have the double round robin. Thus teams make or break their seasons in conference play. With the 20 game conference format, the non conference is now 11 games with approximately 5 competitive game and 6 cupcakes or strategically selected buy games .

Wojo actually did reasonably in the non conference part of the schedule. It was the poor play of MU in the conference schedule that did him in. In a double round robin format where every team knows each other inside and out, every possession is a battle and everyone recruits approximately the same kids; it does come down to the on court coaching ability. Wojo didn't have enough of that premium coaching skill set to elevate himself above the 10 non Jay Wright coaches in the league.

The MU Fan base is looking for a team to do well in conference, get into the tournament be a threat for Sweet 16 and occasionally make a deeper run. To get the tournament goodies, we need to win big in Conference. Our new coach is going to have to be able to consistently get to the 12 win mark in conference .

Assuming all the coaches MU is in discussions with, can recruit with the tools that MU provides: which candidate  is the one that can actually in-game coach enough to win 60 percent of conference games?

Wright
McDermott
Hurley
Anderson
Willard
Cooley
Steele
Ewing
Ex-MU Coach
Jordan
New DePaul Coach

So where will MU's new coach fit in among those listed above?  He is going to have to be able to win both games against a couple of them year in and year out to succeed.

I don't think that there are any hot shot recruiter types out there that can bring in 5 star players. So it comes down to hiring the best seasoned professional we can get. That guy also will need to have a lot of get up and go , because the competition in our league is fierce.

I would like to see Loyola get to the Final Four again this year. If Porter is determined to be our guy , it is worth it to wait and let him come in with having two Final Fours on his resume. Will give him some instant cache in the transfer portal to give him the best chance to come out of the box strong.

In the last 24 hours, you have advised you heard chatter that Dewayne Stephens is in the mix for the MU job, have inquired as to the benefit of hiring Jason Kidd and heard chatter that Justin Gainey is a candidate liked by MU administrators.

Do they meet your standards?  Is the "chatter" even real?  Why insinuate such things?

You said in this manifest post, which is all over the planet, there are no hot shot recruiter types that can,t bring in five star recruits.  Not.... let's introduce you to Dennis Gates, the lead recruiter for Leonard Hamilton at FSU for past decade.  Do your research and see how many were five stars and made/or are currently in the NBA.  And the Smart, whose current team is loaded with recruits which were listed in another thread with their rankings. Probably three of them will be drafted this year.

There's more, but I am out......

Look, the reasonable goals should be competitor for the Big East title; consistent presence in the Top 10; competitor for a national title; and, an annual appearance in the NCAA.

Anything less and we should have kept Wojo.

Wojo had us competing for tournament bids. There's a wide range of success you're ignoring there like consistent second weekend appearances, not getting blown out in the tournament. Before we get back to "we should have kept wojo" level.
