A week ago today I felt really bad for the University of Illinois.
I also felt really bad for Loyola Chicago.
Completely egregious seeding error the likes of which I don't think I've ever seen before.
If job #1 of the selection committee is getting the correct teams into the dance, job #1A is correctly seeding those teams based on their resumes.
There was no one in their right mind that thought Loyola deserved an 8 seed, they were 3 seed lines under-seeded.
The team was 10 in the NET!! The metric that the NCAA calls their own metric. They were ranked in the top 25 and in KenPom top 10. They were a metrics darling.
They deserved better and Illinois deserved better for a second round game.
Today we see the result of such a mistake by the committee- Illinois season is done before the sweet 16.
Completely dismantled by Loyola

Agreed. An 8 seed was a joke for Loyola-Chi.
Said this right after the bracket came out. They should've been a 6.

Illinois is was a 1 seed. From an overrated conference. No sympathy for them.
They are supposed to win no matter who they play

So much for management by metrics. Vietnam was decision making by body count, when will we ever learn?
And most of you think Marquette is "elite". Just because we are in the New Big East does not make us a "power" program. Loyola is fantastic, I'm very impressed.

Purdue as a 4 may have been a bigger hand job.

Yes. #1 seed should beat a #8.....or a #6. Not crying for Illinois.
The committee has been very consistent when seeding mid majors
They heavily weigh who they beat compared to what the metrics say.
Right or wrong, they've pretty much always done it.
Illinois as a 3 in the NET ranking were the favorites and only has itself to blame for losing.
That Loyola, a mid-major, had a NET of 10 after reaching a Final Four in 2018, speaks volumes about how good of a coach Moser is and that we should go after him hard.

...or due to an extremely limited non-con schedule, they had an inflated NET due to their conference schedule. Colgate had a NET of 9 and got beat down by Arkansas. Drake had a top 40 NET most of the year and lost by 20 to USC.
Moser is a good coach and they dominated U of I but NET is a flawed indicator for a mid major team this year.
Illinois has plenty of talent. They should be expected to win. Loyola is a hell of a well-coached team with some smart players. I don't think Loyola Chicago is feeling all that bad right now either...

For Colgate it was. For Loyola, far less so. The various computer metrics were largely favorable to the Ramblers, far more so than Colgate.
I am absolutely fine with Illinois losing every game they ever play.

Not me, I want them to beat Wisconsin.
