Title: Too many open jobs?
Post by: Heisenberg on March 20, 2021, 12:10:44 PM
MU is looking for a new coach

So is ...

DePaul
Indiana
Minnesota

And the ND boards are saying that Brey's future has not been determined.

Is this too many Midwest jobs ? Is MU going to have pay up for a "brand name?"

Marquette isn't losing anybody to DePaul unless Tommy Kleinschmidt decides he wants to try his luck in college again.

Side note, I think Kleinschmidt would be really good on DePaul's staff in some capacity.

Brought Gordon Tech/DePaul Prep back from the dead and he recruits anyways soooo...Maybe an assistant.

Highly doubt this becomes an issue

Safer job (lower expectations) is to coach DePaul, which might make it the better job.

If you don't want Marquette because something else is "safer," I don't want you.

Every job has its own attractions and demands to candidates.  Frankly, there are only so many head coaching jobs in D1, even fewer in the high-major level, even fewer at a basketball-first school, even fewer than that which is not a long-term rebuild.  Marquette's allures are different than that of Minnesota, which is different than that of DePaul, etc.

So, no, there are not too many open jobs right now, and, personally, I think Marquette is the #2 job open right now behind Indiana (and I'm getting the sense from writers that they agree too).  Marquette, unlike 2014, is an opportunity to win now (especially given immediate transfers and possibility to bring along own recruiting class).  Marquette continues to be in the top-20 for basketball spending, plays in brand new NBA arena for a basketball-first athletic department in a large metropolitan city.

Personally, I do not think there will be any shortage of successful head coaches that express interest in the job, and I, again personally, have a lot of faith in Scholl finding a right fit, given his past head coaching hires.  Indiana appears, once again - like numerous times in the past - to be on candidates F, G, H and I.  Stevens isn't going there.  Drew isn't going there.  That, to me, is both the biggest and most complicated opening on the market.  Demands are huge at IU, but for competitive coaches it is always attractive.

Following this line of logic, every job in the Horizon League is better than the Big East.

Don't you dare insult the Horizon League by comparing it to DePaul!

Marquette is a very safe job with a lot more resources.  We took 7 years to fire a coach who didn't win anything.  That's basically a career.

The problem is with DePaul.....They have scared the program.....

After 30+ years people move on.....

We have had spurts since our glory days with O'Neil (limited), Crean, and Buzz.....That is why the change was important.....

Wojo was at the point where he was "scaring" the program.....

The Marquette job to Moser would be higher on the list than DePaul

Here are some tidbits why.....most will not be aware of......Moser is from the Majerus coaching tree for several years.....Majerus loved Marquette and the glory days while being the second assistant......Moser really likes the Jesuit school vibe.....I heard him say so on Chicago radio a couple years back after the last run.....The grinder jobs at the "big schools" were not his cup of tea.....Really really likes the Jesuit school atmosphere.......He is a devout Catholic.....

Obviously you can see he has his teams play tenacious defense......Looks to be a great steward of his program.....Recruiting at MU is not known......But with another run.....Recruiting will take care of itself......It will be more "system players" that fit his system.....

I would be surprised if Shaka Smart will move after finally getting past his growing pains at Texas.....But you never can tell......He might be sick of the rednecks.....

Porter Moser to me.....Seems like the perfect fit.....

I really like the idea of having a tenacious defense again.....

DePaul, lol.

Minnesota, unless they are ready to spend $4MM+ a year (Pitino was making $2.4MM) I don't see a job in the bottom half of the B10 for desirability as a wildly competitive draw.

Indiana is the clear top job, but it's clear some bloom is off the rose. Expectations and facilities and the difficulty in fully putting a fence around Indiana has it likely closer to Marquette than we'd think

He might be sick of his bosses.

Texans are football fans. They usually don't come close to selling out basketball games. Their two favorite sports are football and spring football.

My father-in-law used to get tickets from the visiting teams contingent and we would always go to one of the best ND football games.....(helps to have political contacts)

I have sat in the Texas fan section at ND games.....

I stand by my opinion......
