I think we have a better chance of winning our way into the NCAA autobid than getting an NIT at-large.

I'll guess Pfizer. J&J for a Cinderella story.

If Marquette Wins the next 2 feel they are a maybe for the NIT and if MU wins the next 3 feel they are in the NIT. If  the NIT goes back to only taking teams with 500 and above records which DRating NiT Bracketology seems to suggest with all 500 and above teams in their NIT bracket.

The NIT sucks and is a loser's tournament.  Mike Deane got fired because he said MU should be satisfied with the NIT, hey?

At this point with wojo, it's less being satisfied and more of an achievement.

The NIT isn't the goal for the Marquette program.  Under most circumstances should be seen as a failure.

However under normal circumstances, playing in the NIT is better than nothing especially when you have a young team and want more experience under your belt.  This year though, I wouldn't blame any team for turning it down.  It's been a long road for these student athletes.  Packing it in for the year is probably for the best.

Marquette currently isn't in any NIT Bracketology I've looked at. If they win to the Big East championship game (including tonight's must-win vs Xavier) then maybe they make the NIT. Maybe. I still think Marquette is more likely to get into the NCAA through the autobid than the NIT. 16-14 (8-11) is not close to a sure thing in a smaller NIT field.

Does anyone think MU making the NIT in 2018 really helped them the next year?  We ended up collapsing and getting our asses kicked in the real tournament.  I'd argue it didn't matter at all.

Really not provable either way.  Wojo wanted to play.  The student-athletes wanted to play.  Good enough for me.

Wow.  And I thought the program highlight of beating DePaul the other night was a low point.

The NIT field is all at-large, so they're not beholden to regular season champions.

That being said, if MU can win 2 more games, I think it's possible.  MU still has name appeal and will attract some eyeballs.

I'd bet no team is turning down the NIT this year.

Did MU not go NIT during Ellenson's season by choice, or not invited?  They won 20. Ellenson was BE freshman of the year. Marquette is a brand name. MU won the preseason tourney in Brooklyn. Wojo certainly had notoriety. Always wondered what went down...or, no bid offered.

Nothing "went down".  In fact, MU was pretty much begging on social media to be let in (a far cry from when we fired Mike Deane because he said we should be satisfied with the NIT).  Twenty wins doesn't mean stink when your schedule is trash, which is why we didn't get a bid.

If we don't win the BET, I can see MU lobbying on social again to be let in the NIT.

Not invited. Their non-con was straight trash, and losing to Belmont & DePaul were resume killers. I remember at one point saying they would need 22-23 wins just to get on the NCAA bubble, the schedule was that bad. 20 just wasn't enough for an invite, though they could've done a pay for play tourney like the CBI/CIT (whichever takes high majors).

I would rather we stayed home than play in the NIT. It is the Not Invited Tournament.

We lost to DePaul, gang. That alone disqualifies us from any post-season where a tournament is not obligated to take us.

In Wisconsin perhaps. The rest of the country is back to thinking we are in Michigan.

That was a long time ago.

The fact that Wojo is still here is exhibit "A" that the current admin is ok with the NIT.

I am pretty sure Michigan St. will not turn it down if they missed the NCAA tournament. UNC was in the NIT a few years ago. The goal is the NCAA tournament, but any fan that does not want to accept an NIT bid is a loser as a fan.

I think there is almost zero chance we get a bid to NIT. With only 16 teams they are not likely to take more than one team from a conference. Assume the Big East gets 5 bids, which I think is unlikely we will not be the next team on the list for the NIT.

Marquette's Final RPI that year was 111 and the NIT said at that time they went by RPI and Marquette did not make the cut.
