Title: Xavier
Post by: rocky_warrior on March 05, 2021, 01:45:08 AM
Copying some of my post from the other night, because I can't really figure out how they're bubble material.  If Marquette wins, MU will have 2 more BE wins than them.  If they win we'll have an equal amount of wins, but they'll have less losses - likely only really because of games they didn't play.

Honestly they're lucky to have avoided Nova twice, @ UConn & @SHU (and potential bad losses to DPU).
BE Wins: MU, PC, SJU, @BU, BU, CU
BE Losses: @CU, SHU, UConn, @SJU, @PC, @GTown

On paper the Ws & Ls look about the same as MU.  They just avoided many games they likely would have lost.

Helping others: Juno Beach restaurant server surprised with $2,800 tip from big-spending customers

On a random Thursday night, restaurant server Kimberly Filion got the surprise of her life, not once but twice: two staggeringly high tips on otherwise modest checks. The tips, inspired by a national tip-off challenge that started among rival college basketball fans in Cincinnati, totaled to $2,800.

Filion, a single mother of four who has worked at Kirby's Sports Grille in Juno Beach for the past six years, had never heard of the Crosstown Tip-Off Challenge that has revved up fans of University of Cincinnati and Xavier University since an Xavier Musketeers fan left a $1,000 tip at a local burger joint in January. Last week, a UC Bearcats fan in Wyoming, Ohio, left a $7,000 tip on a $65 check at a local Italian café.

The Juno Beach server learned about the challenge from a customer on that Thursday night, Feb. 18. Filion was fascinated, not only because she was a struggling server but because she had a personal connection to Ohio -- she is a graduate of Ohio State University. She mentioned that in passing to the customer.

"And then he leaves a $1,300 tip on a $30 tab," says Filion, 45, who also serves as Kirby's bar manager.
The exact check amount was $29.71, but the server's eyes went to the handwritten total -- $1,329.71 -- and the note scribbled beneath it, saying "Go XU!!"

The customer left another note as well: "Five Kelley Boys love Kirby's in Juno Beach, FL! They cook your catch! Let's go XU nation! [&UC] Let's get this to the national level!"

They don't have losses, and they don't have the home losses that kill NET & computer rankings. Right now I think this is a 3-bid league, but Xavier is a lot closer than we are.

Agree. Without Marquette's Villanova games Marquette is 7-9 in the conference standings or pecking order and a different seed. Without the Villanova reschedule MU is 7-10 in conference. If Xavier played Villanova twice Xavier's record is likely 6-8 in conference and Xavier a different seed in conference. Pre GTown cancellation MU was 8-6 and went 4-7 after. GTown was 3-8 and went 6-3 after. Understand Covid reasons but wish MU could of rescheduled GTown instead. Frustrating.

This has been a thing since the beginning of 2021.  Xavier & U of Cincinnati alums have been "excessive tipping" restaurant workers in a friendly rival way to help out those in the restaurant industry effected by the pandemic.

The most interesting NET ranking is 9-13 Penn State @ 49, and not near the bubble conversation, vs X @ 53. SOS can really go a long way to boosting the NET.

FWIW. Bracketmatrix currently has Seton Hall as the first team out. Xavier is currently one of the last four byes. I think both have potential to be left out.

Yeah, potential to be left out sure.  But I think Hall is in with a W tomorrow - I don't see an 11-8 BE team getting left out, down year or not.   X is going to be in a tough spot if they lose to us.

Hall hasn't really beaten anyone of note, and I think that is a problem in a year that the BEAST is seen as a weaker conference.

Not based on their body of work. They're a lot like 2018 Marquette. No signature wins and too many losses overall. Their only win over a likely tourney team is UConn, their next best win I guess is Penn State. They'll be close, but look more like NIT than NCAA at this point. They need to beat SJU Saturday to have a chance.

Obviously things can happen during champ week and in other games this weekend so its not 100% win and in but..

I think SHU and X are both kinda in that boat this weekend.

X vs us and SHU vs SJU. Win those games and they are probably in(forsure in with BET wins).

Lose and I really dont see either making it.

I'm actually working on research to determine if conference tourney wins matter. I've been skeptical for awhile if the Selection Committee cares about Championship Week games at all.

Looking forward to that report.  My initial blush would be conference tournaments have done little to move the seeding needle more than a line up or down.

Hopefully by early next week. I'm looking at records, expected pre-tourney seeding vs actual seeding, and quadrant result value (with the idea that not all conference tourney "runs" are equal).

Honestly, they don't really in my opinion. At least thats how its felt.

I more so made it a forsure. Because it wouldnt be a loss. Since X is currently in and SHU is basically 1st team outish. I think 2 wins would do its job to keep them right on the inside, not launch them up 5 spots.

Getting a win this weekend then 1 more would just create enough of a buffer. Because there will be teams around them that are gonna drop games .

If they get left out then they would be unlucky not to have had the opportunity to prove themselves and win the games. We fortunately(?) had the opportunity...but didn't come through time and time again. Overall though, agreed that it is a weird situation with teams having such a discrepancy in games.

MU certainty doesn't seem to have benefitted from having excellent COVID protocols (with maybe some luck) all season and never having to be shut down during the season.

Would be interested in reading this. If I had to guess, I'd say they mean very little. Wish the major conferences would end their conference tournaments on the Sunday before Selection Sunday and then have all of the small conferences (one bid leagues) be showcased in the week leading up to selection sunday. I think that would give the committee more time to better pick the teams.

And awesome for the seniors.

OT but Koby's conversation with Homer about mental health for himself, athletes and men in general is great. He has a really good perspective and it, along with public statements from others on the team (mental health specific and other), show the quality of people we have in the program.

I'm also impressed with how the program has been open to mental health care and social issues that impact the kids on the team. I don't pay much attention to other programs off the court but it strikes me that MU is much more advanced in the mental health side than most and at least on par, and probably more advanced with the social issues.
