Title: Hardyharhar Heels
Post by: tower912 on February 24, 2021, 08:02:19 PM
1.   8 players.   Two over 6'9.   One Jose Perez.    Going into Chapel Hill.    And getting it done.
2.  For all of the Nojo's, take heart.   Some ACC team saw Wojo bring a small, undermanned team with a losing record into Chapel Hill and take down UNC.    Probably thinking they want some of that.
3.  BTW, anybody still saying Wojo has lost this team is an idiot.   Full stop.
4.   UNC should have pressured for 40 minutes.
5.   Apparently, Garcia is going to be OK.  Double double for a freshman in Chapel Hill.
6.  Love watching Greg when he is hitting 3's.
7.  Koby might need to try some CBD edibles.   So jacked up.   Ah, well.   His manic play will probably pay off in a different game.
8.  I see that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. says he has lost 42 pounds.
9.  Give credit where it is due.   Wojo had his guys doubling the post hard in the first half and it disrupted UNC.    The shorthanded and undersized team fought their butts off.    Hat tipped to all involved.  The seniors now have a memory that no one can ever take away from them.    The young guys, if they stick around, have something to build on.  And this is why you play the game.
10.   I am going to sit back and enjoy this one.   On to Connecticut with a winning streak.  Another stop in the endless road trip.

11.  I still hope Lewis and Oso can play again this season.

Happy for the team and good for the BEast.

I was way wrong about this game and I am happy about it.

Maybe Big East basketball is tougher than I thought it was this season.

Does anybody else think Perez reminds them of Wardle? Similar size for sure.

Let's not get ridiculous here. They'd be middle of the BE. 1-6 against Q1 teams.

Great win for the program because it's UNC, but this isn't typical UNC

That's why they play the games.  A lot of people didn't want them to play because they thought they'd get embarrassed.  That's the difference between fans and athletes

Heel yeah.

Following along in the game thread, I would've thought we were losing by the 25 points many predicted here going into the game.

Great gameplan defensively.  Offensively we got whatever we wanted when we were able to get the ball across half court.  For as much as their size might've been a mismatch, they couldn't guard anyone.

Maybe this game didn't hurt the rest of the BE with our NET dropping after all.

Some MU fans lost money.  Sad.

Great job Boyz.
TAMU was correct...that UNC team is not good.
More unforced turnovers than I can remember.
Great to see everyone step up...except for Koby.

not typical because they arent ranked? UNC's roster still has way more talent and better ranked recruits than MU.

Nice to see the team play confident, aggressive and like there was nothing to lose. There wasn't. MU wanted it more. Kudos to the entire team and staff for that.

Anyone that doesn't press MU from the jump is crazy.

Huge lift from Elliott for the second game in a row. Not just making shots either. Got a lot of loose balls and brought some swagger.

Nice memory in a tough season for the team. If you can't enjoy a win like this why be a fan?

When we're 8-10 in conference again 3 years from now with a 2 seed in the NIT - I hope we all still think this win was worth it. UNC is awful and may not have made the tourney regardless of this game.

Major props to Wojo and the team for getting it done.  UNC is ass this year, but that still felt good.  And if what Herman's said about this game is true, and Marquette has been trying to schedule a home and home with the Heels for a few years but Roy was above it, then fook Roy and the horse he rode in on.  There is zero chance they'll ever give us a return game, so it's pretty cool to hand him and his arrogant program a bad loss.  Here's hoping this starts a slide for them where they lose out and miss the tournament.

If you told me Jamal Cain would have 3 points, Koby and Carton have 9 turnovers, MU would have 13 turnovers in second half, Symir would make a three point shot, and that they won, well good for you.  Crazy.

Perez is not bashful, is he?  Made a clutch three to keep momentum going

Have to work on that inbounding the ball thing.  Four times lead to four turnovers and a fifth time lead to a timeout.  Sort of an issue all year, don't get it.

ESPN guys kept saying all game that this would be a bad loss for UNC, all game.  Then with two minutes left, hardly mentioned a good win for MU and Wojo.

Great win, players were really happy.

Terrific win for the players and coaches.  In a season full of emotions, this is one to definitely celebrate.  I'm sure this was very satisfying for Wojo, not just getting a win, or getting a win over a top program, but beating hated rival UNC.  I'm sure he will be getting a lot of congratulatory texts and calls.

It's easy to complain about the past and worry about the future.  Tonight is a great night for MUBB. I'll just leave it right there.

They were out rebounded by 1 overall but UNC got 13 offensive boards.  The Tar Heels historically dominate the offensive glass.  It probably went as well as it could have in that regard

1. Garcia was the best player on the court tonight. Their bigs couldn't stay in front of him, his offensive game had nice variety, and he battled for 11 boards.

2. DJ was one of the two best players on the court in the first half, Garcia being the other. He clearly ran out of steam in the second half, and I'm glad it didn't cost us, but it was a joy to watch him go wherever he wanted to with the ball in the first half.

3. Loved Greg's energy and, obviously, his 3s. He was active on D, too. He can be an important player for us next season ... and for whatever is left of this season.

4. Enjoy the win, folks. Obviously not a great UNC team, but still athletic, tall and healthy. And still good enough to have defeated Louisville by 45 points a few days ago. If you can't enjoy a 13-point win in the Dean Dome, why even bother being a Marquette fan?

5. That goes for even the biggest NoJos. This didn't save The Evil One's job. If Lovell & Co. were gonna fire or not fire Wojo, IMHO, they already would have made the decision. Enjoy the win, and hopefully a few more to come this season. Why? Because competitors play to win, and fans should enjoy it when their favorite team wins.

6. Those thinking that we're gonna suck next season even if Garcia, Lewis and DJ all come back really don't know much about college basketball. The two freshmen will be better, and so will DJ. They will be one of the best trios in the Big East, and hopefully Wojo (if back) will surround them with good role players.

7. Koby had a rough second half but he made a lot of nice passes in the first half, really helped us build our lead. Just saw he finished with 6 assists, and I thought it might even have been more.

8. The guys definitely got tight when UNC cut the lead under 10, but I really like the way they got it back together.

9. Our press break really, really stinks, and that's a bad look on the head coach. That could be an entire thread on its own, so I'll just leave at that here.

10. Everybody who played contributed. Even Torrence and Perez stepped up with 3s. Torrence's, in the second half, was really big.

11. It's gonna be a beautiful, sunny, mid-60s day here in Charlotte tomorrow, and I'm going golfing. I will be fully decked out in my Marquette shirt and hat, wearing the blue and gold very proudly indeed!

Great team effort. It would have been easy to mail this one in but Wojo had the guys ready and they executed pretty much from start to finish. Only quibble - we have to stop inbounding the ball into the corner against the trap/press. I was tearing out what little hair I have left.

But we hung in, and beating Ol' Roy and North Carolina at the Dean Dome is a great accomplishment. Way to go, Warriors!

Forty-four years between wins against the Tar Heels is a long time.
But I'm glad that Wojo did it in the Dean Dome.

Garcia is a gamer, D.J. Carton is getting more confident and Theo is a Warrior. Theo knows he has no backup, and yet he leaves everything on the floor.

While it was a turnover fest (MU 18; UNC 19), MU was able to finish a second straight game. A sign of progress.

Still need to clean up the turnovers and the in-bound plays.

Go Warriors!

I'm stunned with how this one went. The first half was a thing of brilliance. We pounded the defensive glass and did a great job using the length of guys like Dawson and Jamal to mitigate their offensive rebounding. DJ and Greg could get to the rim at will. And we were shooting well. Didn't turn it over too much in the first half either that I saw.

Second half...well, adjustments usually aren't our strong suit. Not sure why UNC didn't just keep pressing us until the end of the game because it was killing us. Dawson seemed huge every time I looked and seemed to settle us when we needed it. Disappointed by Koby. He was our MVP for about the first third of the season but has been really poor since. At least DJ constantly has the ball in his hands as an excuse for the turnovers, Koby less so.

Great performance. Team was ready and showed up. If they can do that again on Saturday, they can creep back into the bubble conversation, which looked impossible a week ago. Gotta win out and make some noise in the Big East Tournament, but for those that believe in Miracles, there is a path...

Hey it was a good win against a team with a winning record on their home court and it's Roy and NC -  that is a good win.  I liked our aggressive double taming in the paint.  We did that earlier in year but always backed off a guy. Tonight we created turnovers with it.

So, this aggressive play I like.  Still miss Lewis and OSA.  Wish we were going to the tourney.

Garcia and Wojo postgame.

Roy said Wojo outcoached him 3 times in his press conference along with a "God almighty if I knew we'd lose I wouldn't have scheduled them."

It sounds like this team is ready to make a run here, so excited for the game on Saturday.

Wojo is very well respected down there and I personally think he'd be a steal for a team like BC, NCST, or wake as he would be a much more natural fit in the ACC.

Was reading UNC's newspaper article on the game. This line struck me. A very different view of Marquette's handling of the pressure:

When UNC went into a press to control the pace, Marquette broke through half court with ease.

If that was with ease, I'd hate to see us having difficulties with it.

As I've said, Wojo seems like a really good guy and runs a good/clean program. I would love for him to be able to turn it around and have a successful career here. I just don't think it's in the cards.

Great first half, more specifically last ten minutes of the half which was our best stretch of the season. Our great interior defense won this game. Garcia was awesome on both ends.

Most of 2nd half looked like the bad MU we have grown frustrated with--the turnovers. But nice moxie to hold onto the lead and build it back.

Anyone miss an entire crew of BE officials? I bet Theo enjoyed this crew.

Wow.

That was the worst we've played against the press in years - which is saying something given that it's hardly the first time we've struggled.

They have such a strong bias against him, and it drives me nutty.

Was reading UNC's newspaper article on the game. This line struck me. A very different view of Marquette's handling of the pressure:

When UNC went into a press to control the pace, Marquette broke through half court with ease.

If that was with ease, I'd hate to see us having difficulties with it.
Didn't we throw the ball directly to UNC under our own basket like three times in a row?

For all the talk pre game about UNC's offensive rebounding, we did a pretty good job. Held them well below their usual rate, and it felt like a decent number of the ones they got were long rebounds/bad breaks.

Garcia and Wojo postgame.

After watching this presser, I'm willing to forgive Wojo for any of his "past sins".

Wondering how many of their rebounds are just because their misses are so brutal. I think there was a free throw that Theo got tied up on because the rebound was so high and deep.

Man, now that was fun to watch last night. Didn't think we had it in us. Let's run the table

That was awesome all the way around.  Only frustration is "what might have been."  Great job by the coaches and the team!

They were #27 in Kenpom before we beat them. They're a great team.

you definitely have a different definition of "great" than most people.

Gonzaga, Baylor, and Michigan are "great" this year. You could probably put OSU and Nova in there too. UNC is decent - only one win against a Q1 team.

Great teams are competing for the national title, UNC isn't even a tourney lock right now.

ESPN guys were indicative of just how much we have fallen off the radar. Nationally we have little respect.

It was a Quad 1 win.  Whether you want to call it good, great, mediocre, average, whatever, it's a quadrant 1 win.  Take it and run all day.

I think the most promising piece was seeing Garcia finish with contact.  That is showing growth & development.

It's ESPN.  They're falling on hard times and have an East cost bias.  ;)
