only to watch the game right now. Sea of Blue at UNC, great energy.

Gotta think the MU alums just are not buying the Gold look.

I personally like the navy blue of Marquette, not the gold.  Gold is a hard color to wear (well I'm speaking from a female perspective).

I don't know, it might be baby blue. It could also be the constant ESPN gushing, Coach K, Roy Williams, Dean Smith, MJ, and on and on. This is Yankees/Red Sox in college hoops and both of these teams get that kind of attention from November until March. If I was a prep star and Duke, UNC and MU all offered me a scholarship it would tough to turn down the first two options.

I personally I don't love the gold as an everyday fashion choice. But, I think gold looks good on TV when our fans decide to wear it. The powder blue at the Pitt game last year was different, but it looked muted and washed out. The gold really pops out. Just my two cents...

I think marquette needs to take a look at duke and how they spread the floor. Yes they were against man to man, but still, I like how Paulus sets up way back and they start moving and then explode towards the basket. I think this is something that marquette really needs to get our offense out of its current standstill.

Yep. There were a lot of things I noticed that Duke and UNC do well that we simply are not. Our biggest problem right now is spacing. We're overloading the ball side, and we're not moving the ball quick enough. Like Bilas said on Monday, too, we have to attack north/south and not east/west. We must find more creative ways to get good looks.

How about the effort in this Duke/UNC game tonight? Both teams left it all on the floor. It was amazing. Too bad we didn't get that Duke win in Hawaii, because they're awesome and it would have probably bumped us up a seed.

i think that coach crean must have sh*t himself seeing how Duke was shooting yesterday. watching it i could only think that that is the offense that crean wishes he had.

MU can't spread the floor the way Duke does b/c no one has to guard us from 21 feet out.  Duke can shoot, we can't.

Watching the game yesterday, I had the same thought about the energy at Duke vs NC.  It was hard not to compare that game vs our appearance on Monday night when there was no energy at all.  But we had a great atmosphere against ND this year and Pitt last year.

In regard to the broadcast, we all know Dukie V loves Duke. But its too much pairing him up with (is it Mike) Patrick?  All he cares about is ACC games and he acts as though the ACC is so much superior than all other conferences that other games are almost meaningless. Its just too much gushing for my taste.

I actually thought the exact opposite. I watched the game and the students were all in Carolina blue. Practically none of the paying customers were. Besides (and not to sound like some of the diehards), but I think for some there is an inherent rejection of gold and anything suggesting support for our nickname.

I also think the reason kids choose NC/Duke had more to do with the weather yesterday!

I didn't get to see the game last night, but I have been to games at UNC, and it is amazing how many people come in Carolina blue -- you stand out if you are NOT wearing it.  Its been that way every time I've been there -- not saying you are wrong, but I would be shocked if that wasn't the case last night.

BTW-- All tix there are season tix, and an alum told me if you don't give 100K (over a number of years I am sure) you don't get season tix in the lower bowl.  Can't verify, but that is what I've been told.  Actually, the student govt was apparently offered the opportunity to get a bunch of the courtside seats a few years ago for a student activity assessment each year and it was turned down -- so the prime tix go to big donors.

-Huge, devoted fanbase that bleeds your colors.
-Electric arena with students ready to start a riot and fans who don't come in suits.
-Coaches who have won a tournament game in more than one season.
-Programs that are used to winning and don't switch to junk brand clothing to get attention because one of their players was successful in the NBA.
-Good weather.
-Hot Carolina girls.
-Campus in the heart of basketball country.
-National media loves you.

Sorry to say, but even though MU is no slouch of a basketball school, any recruit who would choose MU over Duke or UNC is probably not confident in their abilities or afraid of the pressure.

I don't think they were saying that the players chose the school because of the color.  I think they were saying that the fact that the students all dressed in it contributed to an atmophere that was a contributing factor for the players choice.

I think a MUCH bigger factor as to why it seems so crazy  at those games is the size of the arena and where the students sit.  If you put our students along half court in the lower bowl it would have a big affect on the crowd.  Not to mention the fact that they would know they are constantly on camera would effect how they dress and act.  Also the size of the bradly center works against us in some aspects when it comes to crowd energy level.

well, other than white... what other colors are associated with UNC? how many different colored jerseys do they have? 2- white and baby blue. How many different colored jerseys do we have? 4. Do you see where i am going with this?

What also rocks is that the students are always at the game, always to capacity. Also, student have to raise money for charity to receive their tickets and seating for the year. The Orange Krush really is the best student section for so many reasons.

Don't look at Marquette ever changing their system though. Only continuing to raise the student ticket prices...

Maybe if 62,000 kids went to Marquette our student section would always be full. It's a lot to ask 50% of the student body to be at every basketball game. Frankly, things have to be going pretty darn well for that to happen. Since 2002, our students have been great. Could they be better? Sure, but they're louder than everyone else in the BC.

Btw, I sat in the young alumni section last year at the MU/Georgetown game in DC. I wish Marquette would do something like that. I know I got a discount on season tickets for the first 3 years out of MU, but it would be great to group the twenty-somethings together in a section next to the students. It would help with continuity.

Also, the Orange Krush has been pathetic this year. Ask anyone down in Champaign about their attendance woes this season. People aren't interested and that's trouble for Bruce. This was completeley different. It was like the Illinois version of the MU/Cincinnati game in the late-90's.

50% of our student is way too much to ask for, I agree. So why do we give 50% of our student-body a chance at student tickets?

Concerning, the Krush, every game I've seen televised, they've had the place filled. But it is a TV game. I remember when a TV game meant the student section here would be packed.
Title: Re: Anyone who wonders why kids chose UNC or Duke need

I think it would be foolish to limit the amount of students that can attend a game. How often is the student section in the upper deck corner empty and every other seat in the BC full? Never, right? So, why not give us the ability to fill the BC with 4,200 students for big time games a couple times per year. If we sold out every seat in the arena night in and night out, and the student section was consistently half full, then I would agree. But, it's not like there are people turned away at the gate who could be sitting there.

I totally agree about the TV games drawing more students in the past. I was disheartened with the student attendance on Monday night. It was not good for a rivalry game.

It does.  Most of the student section is so far off the floor it feels like being in the parking lot-pretty pointless to make noise.  If there was ever a men's game at the Al (no I'm not suggesting it, I know the Al doesn't have the capacity), 500 students could have the impact of 4000 at the BC; because of the proximity to the floor they would be just go crazy.  Plus no BC security people watching their every move and shooting them dirty looks.

I kinda wish the Al was built to be a 10,000-14,000 seat arena for both the men and women. Thats what makes Dukes place so hard to play at, small, intense with the students court side, not stuck in the corner.

One of the unique things about the BC is it is also a NBA home court.  Not many of those out there (The Garden/St. John's, Verizon/GT off the top of my head) play in a NBA arena.  NBA teams practice at the Al.  For a city like Milwaukee and a private school like MU, this is a major plus for b-ball recruiting.  We also talked about the MU-MSU-NBA coaching connections in the past.

The MECCA was a great venue for a college b-ball game, but it was near impossible to get student season tickets.  You would have to camp out for a week in a tent city for a "chance at half season tickets".  Someone in your group always had to be there in person or you lost your spot.  That situation wasn't very conducive to actually also studying and attending classes--but it was to partying.  It is nice to have the Big House--and it screams big time program.

Pardner, when were you there.   I was there straddling the Majerus/Dukiet eras and always got my season tickets in the student section by simply applying.    The MECCA  WAS a great venue to watch a game.   Use to love to boo the alumni for sitting on their a$$es.   Of course, considering the product they were watching in 86-87 and 87-88, who can blame them?

I love the situation Uconn and Villanova are in with two arenas, which makes it unfortunate that the Al couldn't fit 8,000-10,000 (plus a need for more parking).  Uconn and Villanova can split the home games between their smaller on-campus arena and the larger arena.  That way they pay less to rent out the big building. If the game is a definite seller they can fit a huge crowd into the large building where the size of the crowd and "big-game" atmosphere make it a tough place to play.  For other games they can pack the smaller arena, not have an empty seat, and concession sales go to the school. If the school wants a game at a certain time but can't get the larger arena, they have some flexibility.  Overall, they make about the same amount of money, possibly more than by just playing in the big arena, while making tickets more desirable as half the games are tough to get into, so people will take the games they can get tickets for in the big arena.  The atmosphere at both places provides for a strong home-court advantage.  The full student section can fit into large arena games, while the small arena fits about half as many students, so unused tickets for these games can be sold for a decent price instead of students just not bothering to go to the game and leaving an empty seat.

The Hank Years--rated #1 in the country, with 1977 glory riding high.  It really was bedlam in the MECCA.  Every game was sold out with a person in every seat.  MPD strolled the aisles.  We took rolls of toilet paper from the library to toss after every big basket--it was like a ticker tape parade.  Our games with ND and DePaul were wild--remembering they were F4 teams during this time too--and we played home and home games with them as we were all independents.  Back then, MU games were one of a few where you could buy a beer at an NCAA event because it was a NBA arena (drinking age for everything was 18)...however, you couldn't bring the beer to your seat.  MU had booster and alumni bars set up in the hallways.

I know some of you wonder what the deal is with the Warriors nickname--but it was our identity back then.  The Al years saw a lot of campus, political and social unrest.  Al was this iconoclastic, street guy from New York who would push the system to its edge and would then stick it to them.  Al broke the race barrier, thumbed his nose at Adolph Rupp, the NCAA, and took on social issues in his own way--yet he did it through the little basketball program at a private Catholic university in Milwaukee, WI of all places.  The program was a symbol for much more back then.  That is why the nickname "political correctness" issue won't go away for some, to be honest.

Can you imagine today a tent city for a week on campus with the price of tuition as it is?  Parents and administration would not allow it.  Of course, back then, dorms would only allow five half barrels for floor parties.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, Marquette is the Warriors as much as Indiana are the Hoosiers and UCLA are the Bruins. It's that entrenched and it's why announcers and other media outlets can't get it through their heads that MU made such a ridiculous decision.

Great point, the kids don't choose UNC because of the multiple NCAA championships, famous alumni, great coach, or great campus with nice weather....they choose it because the fans wear blue to the games.

Pardner - love the post.

I enrolled at MU in the fall of 78, but attended nearly every home game throughout all of the 70's - they played in "The Milwaukee Arena" the name Mecca came later - I can't remember exactly when I think it was early 80's.  The old Milwaukee Arena seated 11,229 or some odd number like that and they sold out every game.  (Great concert venue too - saw Bruce Springsteen,Billy Joel, Bob Seger, Supertramp and tons of others in the late 70's early 80's).  The Warriors "owned" that place and Al was the king.

Thanks Romey...found this link on the MECCA on MU Wiki ("MU Wiki is a My Friend").  MECCA was formed  in 1974 apparently.  Loved the JS article on the pop art floor that is linked there.    I remember when they first laid the floor in 1977, the NCAA said it wasn't legal as the half court line wasn't painted through the jump circle.  They had to paint it in.  That floor was another example of an "out there" concept to go with our ever changing uni designs (bumble bee, tuck-outs, etc.)  Always on the edge.

I think Duke and UNC both line the entire floor on the bench side with student seats - so whenever the amera is panning the floor, on a player etc - the wild fans are showing.  Our student section is in a corner.

I think Duke and UNC get the benefit of more noise -the students are closer to the court; and on TV, it looks like energy gone amuck.  We should think about doing the same thing.

Makes the "gold out" look even more like a failure.  But I think Louisville did a better job spreading the word to wear white.  Also, Pitino said that the fans had no excuse not to have white on-they could go to Wal-Mart and get a pack of white Hanes t-shirts.  I don't think they sell gold shirts in packages at Wal-Mart; if they did people wouldn't have a use for them after the game, and if they did our fans would probably pass it up in favor of their black suits and red ties.
