Passing up or missing so many open looks already

Why would Garcia come back down with that ball instead of just putting it in off the rebound?

And a Dawson shot blocked that he should have just put back.

Ughh.  Dawson should have caught that reb and in one motion throw it down with two hands.  Two point blank whiffs for the Warriors.

Title: Re: MU/Nova Game Thread

MU has talent but it is difficult for Win the way they play passing on open shots for turnovers. No court presence or awareness.
Improved but bad defense.

Did you hear that 6 layups missed by MU so far. Some were nova contact but some were MU beating themselves.
Title: Re: MU/Nova Game Thread
Post by: MarquetteMike1977 on February 10, 2021, 08:28:59 PM
A big difference in teams are the teams that are allowed to walk into shooters with their hands up. Nova is one of the best. MU is one of the worst.

For every Carton awesome play, comes dumb turnovers. How many does he have in the first half? MU can play with these teams if they make plays. Elliott again pathetic, 2 wide open shots missed, turnover and D, lack of that. Very frustrating team

8 turnovers and many other missed opportunities by freezing and not making the right play, or shot with no court presence or awareness. Talent is there, Smarts are not, confidence does not seem to be there either. That said Go Marquette!

Disappointing. Looked pretty solid the first 16 minutes or so.

DJ is so careless with the ball. 3.7 turnovers per game over the last 7, including 6 today.

Additional observation:
Ohio State was 13-7 with him last year, 7-7 vs high-major teams. After he left, OSU finished 8-3 (all HM opponents). OSU is 16-4 this year, 12-4 vs HM.

The kid is talented, but he isn't a point guard.

I used to be the biggest projo ever but the biggest thing for me is this...
1) There are teams that put you on edge and make you uncomfortable while you're on offense because they're so solid defensively and pressure and switch well (St Johns for example).  We don't do that which is why we are awful at creating turnovers and teams score at ease against us.  Also, we get in foul trouble every game because guys are constantly out of position and nobody is helping until it's too late.
2) There are teams that put you on edge and make you uncomfortable while you're on defense because they attack and move off of the ball (think Creighton).  We don't do this either and consistently get pushed off of the 3 point line and get forced into making terrible passes that end up in turnovers.  Also, we end up with terrible shots while the shot clock is winding down because we don't know wtf is going on because 3 dudes are standing around the majority of the time.

These are coaching issues.  I really don't think the talent on this team is THAT bad.  I like a lot of the game in a lot of these guys.  If they had the right coach I think they would be much better.  There is no aggressiveness or toughness in Wojo's teams since he's been here (how many charges do we ever take?).  I miss the days when we were known for our toughness and fight.  Now, the only time I ever hear about it is when we're down 10 points with a couple minutes left and we're fighting to make it a game.  It's a joke.

You’re absolutely correct.  Guys with less talent like even Mike Anderson for example.  He has a scheme in defense with the press and trap.  There is just not “it” factor in any facet of Marquette’s game with Wojo.  There is nothing specific that Nova or any of our opponents are afraid of when playing us.

Hopefully MU can cut it down to 12 with Jays bench playing.  That will show effort.

Do you think they practice pressing??  Lol when is the last time Marquette pressed when they weren't down double digits at the end of a game?

A lot of them know how to play... it's more about being guided in the right direction as a TEAM to play TOGETHER
Agree with you that is what I meant when I said We.

Believe it or not, Marquette didn't lose this game because the refs blew 1 call on Theo John.

I honestly feel for these players.  I don't blame them nearly as much as the coaching staff.  Preparation breeds success and I feel as though we lack in that category very much.

Nailed it.  I know guys who played under Buzz and thought he was kind of an pretty boy but said that he worked them like crazy.  You need to be an pretty boy at times to be a good coach.  The only people Wojo is an pretty boy to is to reporters who ask uncomfortable questions.

Agree with much of what has been said.  These players are too good to be playing this bad and that is all on the coach.  Need a coach with an identity on the floor.  We are randomly chasing our tail on both ends of the floor.  It’s a method that at times has some high risk high reward to it (eg, close first half) but totally not sustainable (eg, lose by 30).  Such a waste of a season.  Wojo has to go.  Sooner the better.
