With Villanova on the horizon and looking down the barrel at a 1-3 conf open, I'm getting some 2010 flashbacks. Signs of nice wins, paired with a rough opening conf schedule and of non conf home game (NC State / Okla State) that we all felt we should have won.
And after 1-4, it got worse bc we lost to KenPom's 170th team, DePaul 51-50 to fall to 2-5. But then schedule opened up, 5 games all KenPom 50 or higher, more confidence was gained and wins were acrued.
We finished the season 11-7 in conf.
2010 followed the graduation of Dom, Jerel and Wesley. There were talks on here of building statues for those 3 outside the BC. They were are important to the previous 4 years collectively as Markus (and Sacar). Guys like Lazar (and Acker, and David, and Jimmy) had to step into bigger roles while new talent like Buycks and DJO filled in the gaps.
I am not ready to give up on 2021. I think there's a 2010 stuck inside it, waiting to come out. Let's just hope we don't blow that lead against Washington this time.
Didn't we go 10-8? Too lazy to look it up. But yeah was thinking something similar the other day
Edit: Apparently we did go 11-7. Apparently that season's more impressive in reality than in my memory.

I forgot about that stretch where they beat three straight teams on the road in overtime toward the end of February.
Yeah I can see the similarities between that team and this one. This one doesn't have as good of a coach, and he doesn't have a history as a strong finisher.

Buzz is a better coach than Wojo. But while Wojo has sucked as a finisher the last two years, the two years before that he finished the regular season 4-1 and 5-1.

I think we'll be fine. The opening schedule had all the signs of a 1-3 or 2-2 start after four and a 3-4 or 4-3 start after seven. Still think we finish 11-9 or 12-8.

Maybe, but my recollection is that the Vibe was a cooperation with Toyota, so the sister car is a Matrix.

I'm not really a car guy, but this is something I never understood. You dropped Pontiac but kept Buick? My guess is that it was to appeal to the aging Boomers. But now their add campaigns are mocking the brand. "That's a Buick?"
When GM was bankrupt and undergoing reorganization, Buick had distinctive product in the pipeline. Pontiac didn't. All of their upcoming stuff was indistinguishable from Chevy except for styling. Pontiac was sacrificed.

Buick survived simply because the brand is enormously popular in China. Buick typically sells around as many cars per year in China as Honda does in the US.

I think the actual reason was the for some completely unknown reason, Buick actually sells really well in China. So it was kept for that market.
** Ah, I see it was already addressed. It is still stupid. And Buick seems like a good car comparison for Wojo. Completely acceptable, but in no way cool, great or exciting, other than its proximity to a cooler brand (Caddy). Just competent with an everlasting hope it could be something better. But in the end, its still a Buick.

The Regal GS wasn't a bad car. Now, just SUVs.
It's just incredible that GM lasted along as it did making 5 of the same car + GMC trucks. At least Ford only had 3 versions.

The market for non-performance cars is basically dead. With crossovers getting similar mileage to cars, people, at least here, seem to want the space and height of CUVs and SUVs.

This is what I have always heard, (I am a Mark of Excellence (tm) Buick salesman). The Emperor of China drove a Buick.
They're fine as semi-luxury SUVs. I have a 14, 11, and 8 year-olds and The Wife drives an Enclave and there's nothing wrong with that. The Encore is getting phased out for the slightly larger GX version, but will still sticker around $26k nicely equipped. The Buick Envision is being completely remodeled, (I saw one at a Hummer unveiling), and should actually arrive any day.
Me suspects Lens was responsible for that pos "Gold" car that Crean had ordered up. Pontiac or Buick? And whichever that car company was responsible, they deservedly earned their fate.

First car I 'inherited' from my dad was a mid-70s ('75 or '76) Olds Delta 88 Royale.
It looked like an old man's car and had an old man's car interior, and the steering certainly wasn't what you'd call responsive...but the 455 4-barrel V8 took off like a freakin' rocket. The only downside was actually being able to see the hole open up in the ozone layer as I drove....

My Grandmother had a two door 1972 version of the same car with that huge engine. She was about 4-11 and could barely see over the steering wheel but she loved burning rubber with that car . Those were the days.

I had an '88 Cutlass Ciera in HS... My parents bought it from a granny that never drove it over 40. The first time I got it out on 41 the dashboard nearly rattled itself apart. Eventually, it was broken in and ran for a few years... until the transmission quit. Might have been me stomping the gas pedal whenever I could.
I loved Pontiacs back in the day... Of course they were all tanks, made of metal incl heavy duty bumpers ! ! ! But my fave was my first new car off of the showroom floor. 1973 Pontiac Grand Prix.. The front of the car arrived 30 min before the back of the car. All front hood, with the 400 4bbl ( I got it up to 122 mph one time) under it...Quite the "Cruiser" ! ! !

I had a '55 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible. Leather seats, blankets on the seat, blaket hanging from the convertable cross member, newspapers under the seat. When men were men and cars were cars. Sold it for $25.00 in 1966 when I went into service.
Back to talking MUBB. I would say the Vibe is more like 2006 with Freshman Jerel, DJ and Wes and then anchored by seniors such as Novak and Chapman.
I like the 2006 comparison. We've got some solid and steady program stalwarts helping talented freshmen to find their way.
The only problem with the analogy is this year's returners don't really have a comp for Novak (who put up 17.5 ppg and played a decade or so in The League).
I'd sign up for the 2020 version of the 2006 Team's 4th place finish in the Big East (10-6) faster than 11:15 mass at a seaside resort.
That 2006 team was so Creany. Huge win vs. UConn to open up play and then goes 9-8 the rest of the way. Including losing to a .500 Cinci team at home 3 days later.

Scoop imitates Life or Life imitates Scoop?
I've really enjoyed watching this years team. There is a lot of negativity here on scoop towards this team. Maybe that has to do with expectations. They have exceeded mine. I expect the ups and downs with this team, but like what I've seen and the grit and determination is there that has been missing in recent years (maybe it was there, but some players had such physical limitations that it didn't show).
I expect us to lose tonight, but I also expect us to compete and have a few runs. A few breakdowns as well. But, if we shoot like at UCLA, it could be a long night (4/20 for 3 at UCLA is what killed us - hit a few more and that is a different game).
I had a vibe back in 2013. Got totaled in an accident on a Friday morning during the NCAA tournament. Came home after watching it get towed away to see Marshall Henderson put the finishing touches on UW@Madison, all was not lost that day
