Thought Walton was great tonight. He really knows and respects Marquette's history. I know Maurice Lucas was Luke Walton's godfather - sounds like Bill is still a fan.
He's terrible as a basketball color guy.
But I know why people like him as a story teller. Leave it for the documentaries.

Bill is unique. Not your typical color guy. I personally like him quite a bit.
Walton talked a lot about Al on the broadcast, so I can see why some on this board would've hated it. But he respects MU's history, said a lot of great things about the current team, and got on the refs for calling so many fouls on us. *And* he was not particularly a homer for UCLA. He may be a kook, but that's his thing and I'm willing to cut him some slack.

He's a terrible color guy, but I did appreciate the amount of Marquette history he shared. That's the least he's ever bothered me. Trashing the terrible refs didn't hurt either.

What?
Walton is always must see tv for me. He is funny with Dave Pasch on ESPN. Never talks about the game. Gets rough when watching your own team. Great when it's two teams you don't care about.
Much love for Marquette tonight. Heck, Major Goolsbys made it in!
He was right about the refs - they were awful.
I also liked when the PBP guy called out Wojo's ass for never having won an NCAA Tournament game. That was a real nice touch, a salient point that does not get brought up enough on MU broadcasts.

Yeah we always whine about Coach Wojo after a loss...calm down. No one says anything positive after a win.
Sometimes the other team plays better.

Walton is the best...love his off the cuff commentary. You can tell he loves the game and makes you happy watching it.

No he's not....you are delusional. He just as a different take like a buddy watching the game! He is not terrible...he is himself which I think is refreshing and is kind of funny and goofy in a entertaining way and he is spot on when he wants to get technical.
Maybe he would be hard to take seriously if he was your color guy every night...but every once in a while, it's like 'lets see what Walton has to say this game' kind of vibe. I like that. Good stuff.
Besides was a magnificent basketball player back in the day when i saw him at UCLA and his early years in Portland. I saw him when I was in San Diego jogging in Balboa Park and said hey Big Bill and although he was working out hard and sweating too time to say hello, I appreciated that and I have never spoke or bothered a athlete every again if I saw them in public.
Seem like a cool dude that overcame the same stammering issue I had once and is a good analyst.

Once in awhile it is nice to listen to somebody that is different. How many times can you listen to Bilas and Vitale, boring after awhile. Walton new more history on MU
then any color commentator ever. The production was on top of this, with photos of Lucas and Doc Rivers. Not to many young Warrior fans knows anything about, Dean,
Tatum, Lee and others. All they know about is DWade, but he even mentioned Novak and Diener. His stories tonight were interesting, kudos to MU's pr people, I am sure they reminded him about the past. Goolsbys was great, personal friend of owner! Go listen to "Oh Baby" now that is a terrible color guy.
I thought Walton was great. Lots of talk about Al and Luke and other old Marquette players, MECCA and Goolsby's. He was very complementary of Wojo and our current team. And he wasn't afraid to call out the refs when they made a bad call, even if it went in UCLA's favor.
I was expecting total bias to UCLA, but it was not. Credit to Walton, promoting MU basketball. Even he realized that UCLA needs to play more games against better
competition like Gonzaga if they want to get back to there glory, at least west coast dominance. It has been along time for them as well.

I was at the '64 game, before the MECCA we had the Arena. He even mentioned Ed Hickey, the coach before Al. He covered the NIT trip where Al manned up to the NCAA.
The ticky-tacky refs. didn't bother me because Walton called them out with class. Walton gave M.U. (coach, team, and institution) total respect.
I enjoyed it so much I will leave my t.v. package intact for the rest of the season although I will have to watch some more of the clown Cronin.
I don't need someone to wax poetically about Marquette's history. We have the Meat Eaters for that.
I need someone who is going to make observations about the game in which they are working.
He was actually better than I expected. ESPN must try to get him to go way off topic to go viral. He was definitely off topic, but mostly basketball related.

Just because you have a fond memory of him doesn't make him good at his job. He talks history, but can't really talk about the game in front of him. He regularly gets names wrong, often in multiple different wrong ways. He also tends to go down nonsensical rabbit holes that have nothing to do with the game.

South Carolina was a 1 point game with 10 minutes left. We were winning at halftime. Plenty competitive. Just a terrible last 10 minutes.

Yep, the game was "plenty competitive" until, with a lot of time left, we ended up getting curb stomped by 20.

Yeah, when I've watched PAC12 games in the past, I've always been annoyed by how he spends most of the game talking about things other than the game. The PBP guy has to work extra to provide some actual commentary on what is happening on the court.
Though I do think Walton was good last night. Perhaps it was a lot of the love he was showing to Marquette that has me biased towards his performance last night, but I thought he didn't stray too much from game commentary.
I would guess Over half of the color commentators do not add much to the game or actively detract.
Last night wasn't some sort of ideal commentary, but it was enjoyable and relevant to an MU fan.
Would I like to hear that 20 times a season, no. Was it better than the average Marquette game with Simpkins or Elmore. Absolutely.

Games can be competitive despite a lopsided final score and can be blowouts despite a closer final score. We beat Butler 76-57 last year. It was a competitive game. We lost to SC by 20. It was a competitive game. We lost to Murray state by 19. It was not a competitive game.
A game tied for 30 minutes where one team pulls away at the end is more competitive than a game where one team leads by 15+ the entire way and ends up winning by 9.

Sorry if he didn't meet your "needs". Sad that those "needs" involve a college basketball color man.
The people that whine about Bill Walton must be, unfortunately, chronically upset individuals.
Lighten up - he's a color guy and basketball legend with a unique POV. I hope you survived our one game of the year we had to listen to him.

There is definitely a growing hostility towards the Al era on this board, and I think a good deal of it has to do with Wojo's lack of success.

Anyway my "needs" were obviously in the context of what a broadcaster can provide when watching a game. Most people would understand that.
At one point he had no idea who was on the floor. At another he said he hasn't seen anyone on Marquette play.
I expect more than someone telling stories about things that happened 50 years ago. Sorry that you want to live in the past while watching a basketball game. But I guess since your best days were long ago, that makes sense.

Yeah I have no idea who's "hostile towards the Al era." Some things that people make up on this board are just...odd.

Oh I agree with you there. I remember shortly after Wojo was hired somebody on here said that he'd take Marquette to heights not seen since the 70s. No real basis for the statement. It was very odd, indeed. And ultimately false.

So getting something wrong is comparable to making stuff up that was never said. Makes sense coming from you.
I believe that was said shortly after MUWarriorPilot told us he flew a B1G AD that told him Wojo would knock it out of the park at MU.
But please. Tell me more about how ProJos hate Al. Lol. What a nut.

I can honestly say I've never seen something hostile about the Al era posted on this board.
Hostile about posters who were around during the Al era? Absolutely seen it. I think that has more to do with politics and views on the current era of MU basketball.
I said this in the other Bill Walton thread but I enjoyed him last night. It was nice to hear a fan of the program talk glowingly about Marquette (and criticize the reffing)...I would hate it if I had to listen to him for multiple games a season.

Yeah, I think I'm conflating hostility towards the Al era with hostility towards some of the posters who were around then (which absolutely does exist). I tend to share their views when it comes to the current era of Marquette basketball. As for politics, I stopped reading the Covid board a long time ago and wouldn't know about that.
