Title: Bill Walton
Post by: Galway Eagle on December 01, 2020, 03:57:02 PM
Anybody watching Stanford vs UNC where he's literally talking about doing Mushrooms and touring with the Grateful Dead. Has he always done this and I never noticed? How is he still on TV?

He's ridiculous.  I would invite a maskless Dickey Simpkins to provide commentary in my living room over listening to Walton.  (And I'm not that picky about announcers either.)

EDIT:  It's just ESPN schtick.  They did the same thing with Vitale, whose genuine enthusiasm was turned into an act.  And with Madden, but at least Madden got to finish his career at NBC which showed everyone why he was popular in the first place.

The stories are fine if you seldom listen to him. Those that listen often hear the same thing over and over.

The problem is that as an analyst, he doesn't analyze. Tony Romo, meanwhile, goes off on a tangent now and again, but he is as good as it gets as an analyst.

when he's doing a Pac-12 conference game do a shot every time he says "Conference of Champions." If you're alive the next day you've won the game.

1. Yes
2. Name recognition

Almost impossible to listen to.

I turned it on with about 6 minutes to go, muted the volume after the 4-minute TV time-out.

It's neither funny nor informative. Just bad.

Mad props to Jason Benetti for hanging with him.  The guy's terrific on White Sox broadcasts and will probably be getting more national games in the coming years.

Benetti is incredible with him. Especially since he doesn't have the hours and hours of experience handling him like Pasch does. He was great today when Walton was going completely off the range by letting his bizarre thought hang in dead air and then pivoting, not trying to interject and allow him to keep roaming. I mean the dude talked like 2-3 min straight about LA area mountain ranges.

Jason Benetti worked with Walton last year in Maui. Plus, they did a Angels game in 2019.

I think Benetti is head and shoulders above Brian Anderson.  Benetti is witty, cultured, and also comes off as a very warm person.  BA seems nice enough, but he's very vanilla and wouldn't know a pop culture reference if it took a dump on his forehead.  Would like to see Benetti get more love nationally.

I wasn't suggesting they were strangers, but that's a wild and difficult personality to wrangle if you've only done a handful of games, like Benetti, and his ease and skill in doing so speaks volumes.

I don't disagree at all. I admit to having a bit of a bias against Anderson cause I always thought he was crap with MU calls despite being local, but while he's competent and versatile, he's just very generic.

Benetti reminds me of of early Matt Vasgerian when he did Brewers games. You just knew he was bigger and destined for more than just local coverage of a single team.  Benetti is a bit older and already a bit more established than similar stages, but I'd be shocked if he doesn't move on from the Sox in the next few years cause he's a top tier PBP guy at ESPN. He's fantastic.

Agree 100% about Vasgersian.  Unfortunately, his act has devolved into schtick over the years and he now seems to think people are tuning in as much to see him as to watch the game.  I don't think the same thing will happen to Benetti.

If you want a great laugh, though, look up "Drunk Rick Sutcliffe" on YouTube.  Vasgersian is absolutely priceless trying to reign Sut in.

my favorite Vasgersian moment was his first season (I think 1999):

Bill Schroeder: "Don't forget to sign up for the Brewers fantasy camp, coming this February."
Vasgersian: "is that baseball or any fantasy? Because I've got one with that Britney Spears."

silence from Schroder and then after 5-10 seconds Vasgersian says "yeah!"

Bennetti reminds me of Dan Schulman, who was able to reign in Vitale too.

Bill Schroeder strikes me as a humorless oaf with a PG sense of humor, which is probably why he co-exists so well with BA.  I'm guessing he didn't enjoy working with Vasgersian all that much.  Only in Milwaukee could a guy like Schroeder have a job in TV for 30 years.

Brewers figured a forgettable catcher named Bob Uecker became a legend, so that must be the formula, hence Schroeder. Fans can look forward to Chad Moeller taking over when Schroeder retires

Anyone else hear Walton ask during the UNC/Stanford game (when Butler U. came up in the conversation) "Brad Stevens isn't still coaching at Butler, is he?"

I'm showing my age with this one but waaaay back when Roger Staubach was QB at Dallas, Brett Mussberger's co-announcer, a former FB player, commented on the way Staubach returned to the huddle, saying "Roger runs like a sissy."
Long pause. Mussberger finally replied "WHAT did you say?" The guy repeated it. Another long pause. Then Mussberger asked "When you played football, did you wear a helmet?"

It's just ESPN schtick.  They did the same thing with Vitale, whose genuine enthusiasm was turned into an act.

I was the mascot at the 2006 CBE when Marquette played Duke and Vitale and Shulman were on the call.  They called me over to sit behind them in the stands as they recorded a segment.  Vitale was a regular guy and talked to people like a normal human being but as soon as those lights came on he turned it up to 11 with all of his yelling and over the top nonsense.  Once they stopped filming he was back to his normal self.  It has to be exhausting doing that act every time you are on camera.

It made him a ton of money and got him into the Basketball and College Basketball Hall of Fame.

I remember seeing an old ESPN Classic broadcast of a game Vitale was doing in the early 80's. No screaming, no catchphrases, just analysis, and observations.

Bilas is great. He can get on a high horse at times but overall he's informative and entertaining. Lavin is solid.

I just hope these guys can do it from the arena. I'm assuming they're doing it from somewhere they do not need to travel far to? And that travel is the reason they aren't doing it from the arena? Otherwise I'd think they could very easily call it from 20 rows up and be plenty distanced. It was brutal having them call it from outside of the arena on Tuesday. And it's really not their fault.

I was watching W.V. vs. Gonzaga tonight and Bilas was doing an actual play by play.  Refreshing.
He was remote and there was no fake, distracting crowd noise.  You would think the young producers would be against 1960's canned sound tracks.  Perhaps they have watched too many sitcoms or game shows.

Agreed, not only is the vibe off, but they miss blatant plays and call fouls the wrong way cause they can't see or hear the referees. It's jarring. It's inconsistent cause some games have them in person, others don't, they should be able to be there.

That's not the producers or the network, the crowd noise is pumped in at the game to try and make it sound or feel a bit more normal for the players. It's been true across sports.

1.   Tune DOWN the fake crowd noise.
2.   Tune up the play by play.
3.    Use the arena announcer, with the loud reverb if you must, to highlight plays and give credit for plays.
4.    It's a learning curve and not as easy as it looks.
5.    I agree, it's producers not yet knowing what they are doing.

I don't mind having something to cover the squeaking shoes and such, but it'd be nice if they could do better than a mostly constant din, and turn up the cheers when the home team goes on a run or hits a big shot. It's 2020 - I can't believe Fox, ESPN and the other big networks couldn't do that with a simple soundboard....

Ha, that reminds me. Back in high school, had a volleyball match against a school that played classical music when it was our turn for warmups.

Next time they came to play at our place, coaches had a special soundtrack lined up for them. The only song I remember from that list was the one they opened with, Old Man River.

I liked Roger Staubach a lot, but I do understand the comment from the former player about Roger sashaying into the huddle. Never quite understood how such a manly man had that one less than manly aspect.

I saw him at Dead and co. at Wrigley a few years back. Look at his left hand.
If you bring up Bob Dylan you'll never get away from him.

was he trippin'?

I was not a fan of Walton as a player, but he's really grown on me as an announcer over the years to the point that I'd call him a National Treasure.

Having said that, I prefer to listen to him when my team's not playing because his tangents too often obscure the game.

It has become borderline impossible for me to watch a game with Walton as "analyst," and that will be doubly so with Marquette playing.

I'm good for about half the game. Then he will annoy the living sh!t out of me to the point where I will probably have to mute the audio

Normally I'd change the channel or turn the TV off if Walton is doing a game.  This time I had to resort to muting.

SO bad.

Unmuted the last 2 minutes.  When he actually should pay attention to the game (and he mostly did).

Bill was great. He knew more about MU history than almost any other announcer. Yes, rando tangents.

Also, him putting officials on blast by name was fantastic. Pac 12 refs are brutal all the way around.

Go eat some brownies and mellow out.

Not Walton related, but I will watch many games on mute. Sound is fine, but I don't have to have it. Sometimes if there is a play by play person or analyst, whose work I don't care for, it'll be a mute game for me. (any sport) And, there are "lower sound" games too. Sound on, but not at a normal or higher level. It depends on the game. And of course, there are many others, whose work I enjoy and appreciate with sound up. It depends on the play by play person and analyst. (I don't watch much pregame, halftime, post game, sideline etc but I do pay a lot of attention to pxp and analyst and my sound viewing varies.)

Why do I care if an announcer knows the history of Marquette from 40-50 years ago?

I actually didn't do it last night. That was the "good" version of Bill Walton. Actually talked about basketball 95% of the time. Where he loses me is when the random thoughts start taking over.

I can't think of another announcer team where the color guy talks more than the pbp. He is good in doses and he calls them like a fan. But he is a color guy not an analyst. I would not enjoy him during conference games but he was very good in this historic match-up.

I'm wondering if ESPN tries to have him go off topic more in order to go viral. Or if he's a bit different calling a UCLA game.

ESPN did the same with John Madden so that's definitely a possibility.

I usually can't stand him. I didn't mind him last night because while he rambled, at least it was rambling about how much he loves Marquette! Would hate if he regularly announced our games.

You'd lose the bet, Mr. N. I mute it quite often. Muted it last night because I'm not a Bill Walton fan, and mute it every time Dickey calls one of our games.

Like you and most other Scoopers, I am plenty knowledgeable enough about basketball to know what's going on without announcers -- especially those who tend not to tell me what's actually happening on the few plays that matter.

I mean, in non-COVID seasons, I often get together at bars with friends to watch Marquette play, and they usually don't have the volume on. We enjoy it just fine.

If Robinson and Walton were great last night, well, I guess I missed their greatness.

For the portions I had unmuted - he certainly waxed poetically about Marquette.  So in that way he wasn't bad?

But he certainly didn't do any research into the current roster, previous games, know names, or even pay any attention to the current game.  So that part was just as usual.

Walton can be very annoying and even more so without someone skilled like Schulman to pull him back in, but it was cool to hear someone without any ties to the university speak so glowingly and articulately about the program and it's history. It wasn't media guide stuff either, or the standard National/Dickie V "oh my good great friend Al McGuire", it was Major Goolsbys, the student seating at the Mecca, the people MU has put in the pros, etc... For a PAC 12 broadcast, he put a near excessive amount of respect on Marquette's name. And it was clearly from the heart. I honestly would think that UCLA fans watching the game were like "enough about Marquette already".

If your preconceived opinion of him is beyond repair, that's totally fine. But as someone who wasn't looking forward to hearing him spin off the face of the earth like he normally does, I was pleasantly surprised and appreciated his perspective and respect. I also disagree with Rocky, he had some good points about the freshman and Carton and Koby that showed he did some homework. There were a few points where I was like "dude knows basketball and can be really insightful when he's not getting distracted into a story by literally ANYTHING"

+1000. To those who had made up their minds BEFORE the game, he sucked. Rocky panned his performance without even listening!

Those who actually tuned in (other than our resident sourpuss - Fluffy) were generally pleasantly surprised.
