Title: [Cracked Sidewalks] Oklahoma State Preview
Post by: brewcity77 on November 06, 2020, 09:50:37 AM
Cade Cunningham will lead the Cowboys to Milwaukee in Marquette's first high-major showdown of the year. So is this a NCAA contender like some pundits are saying or more of a great talent on a so-so team? Here's the Cracked Sidewalks preview of OSU:

A friend of mine recently asked me what I thought of our chances against Oklahoma State. I made the exact same Ben Simmon's LSU comparison. One future NBA stud surrounded by nothing (Likele is really good but the rest of the roster is nothing).

Agreed completely. They seem to be a consensus top-40 team and I'm just not seeing it. Pomeroy has them as a top-40 offensive and top-30 defensive team when Boynton's best previous ratings are 61 and 46, respectively. Maybe Cade will be so good that they are on the right side of the bubble, but Likekele is the only guy back who's at all proven. They need a ton of contribution from guys that have never contributed anything meaningful at this level before.

Cade is a much more polished player than Ben Simmons was.  Or even is?

Should be a high quality college basketball game . Perfect for early December.  Hard Fought , MU comes out on top due to our teams experience against tough competition.

Two returning starters does not equate to experience.
Oklahoma St. will easily have the best player on the floor.

I might be the only here who thinks Baily is a huge loss. I would feel much better about this team if Baily had stayed. Not a great player, but he had been through a Big East season. Now we only have John and Cain in front line with any experience.

We have yet to see a fully healthy Elliott . However he does have experience and has played well despite not being fully healed from his various injuries.

He is a guard. I specifically mentioned the front line, which in my mind means forwards and centers.

The Athletic's Brian Hamilton (a Chicago guy who regularly writes about MU), says this ...

It's a big, big week for Marquette as it continues life after Markus Howard. The Golden Eagles had the expected easy and uncomplicated liftoff with two games against nonconference chum, but here comes the double-shot of Cade Cunningham and Oklahoma State on Tuesday and then the rivalry game against Wisconsin on Friday. Scheduling two cakewalks to start was smart, to work out the kinks and build a little confidence in the new dynamic. But you don't want to backslide to Square 1 when the competition level increases.
