You have to admit it is better than the Billiken, which is #2 on this list.

No chance Golden Eagles is better than Billiken. At least Billiken has a bit of uniqueness to it.

Bleuteax flopped, but the blue blob is a hit. go figure.
Where would Willie Wompum rank?
1,000,000,000 on a scale from 1-27
I'm surprised creighton's SID hasn't freaked on this yet. They tend to get up in arms when people spell in Blue Jays when it's Bluejays.
Sister Chick,
It is a Furry Bird, for heaven's sake. I'm surprised they didn't rank some high school mascot ahead of it.
Birds don't have fur. They have feathers. Until we dress our eagle in a complete feather costume, it will still be an unauthentic furry bird. What a furry bird has to do with Marquette is anyone's guess.
Maybe if the group that wanted to go back to Warriors had put another zero in their offer, the Jesuits would have listened.
Golden Avalanche would have been near the top of this list.

I preferred the Marquette Inquisition, after a part of history brought about by the Jesuits!
Jumping Jesuit's, eh?

Absolutely. Not as high as Warriors, but right behind it.

Not picking on you, Wades - I've seen "unique" qualified (more unique, e.g.) here often by different posters - but either something is unique or it's not. Kinda like pregnant.

True. I just meant to put emphasis on the fact that the "Golden Eagles" is about as bland/boring/common as it gets in sports mascots.
"Marquette was the first Catholic university in the world to admit both women and men."
The mascot argument gets very tiring, but we should go back to Warriors and make Joan of Arc our mascot. Embrace the fact we went co-ed first.

Co-sign.
LMU gets extra points for naming their lion "Iggy."
So it's an article about mascots, but Detroit is 11th out of 27 because of its logo?
Someone might wanna tell the writer that logos and mascots are not the same thing....
Its the most boring mascot ive seen. Just scrap the whole thing. We didnt some dude in a cheap chicken suit runnin around fiserv

Mascots are for kids. Well, unless you're a UW fan and you think Bucky Badger (which is a awesome mascot) is something more than a student in a costume.

They're better at thinking their mascot is more than a student running around in a costume?
Yeah.
When asked for my input I suggested keeping Warriors and substitute a Norseman for Old Willy
Still amazed at the lack of imagination from a UNiversity

I liked someone's suggestion of Joan of Arc. Just think how progressive we would have looked to have a female mascot for men's sports.
Does anyone know of in college athletics (No cheerleaders don't count)?

Nice try, but Delaware Blue Hen is actually a breed of gamecock.
And this mascot is definitely a dude.

UCLA, NC State, Arizona, Akron.
Pretty sure Bucky has been neutered. Does that count?
at least the author tells ya right off the bat where he stands politically-
"Marquette and Seattle are to be commended for team nickname changes that the Washington, D.C. pro football team should take as instructive. But they could've picked something more interesting."
too bad santa cruz ain't jesuit-my all time fav-banana slugs- could have a lot of fun with that one as well as wichita state's, as they already do ;D

maaaaaaaaaaaaybe it has nothing to do with politics, and everything to do with respecting other human beings and their culture.

ok hards, my man...what iffffffffff the author said marquette and seattle whimped out to the minority viewpoint instead of "commended"? would that still be respecting other human beings? in this instance, the ones who disagreed with the name change and felt the name "warrior" did not necessarily refer to native americans as it once did
he finishes with a statement that i am very much in agreement with-"but they could've picked something more interesting"
all i'm saying is, at least the guy revealed his persuasion. that's all. i'm not criticizing him for it. it then allows one to better understand the lens thru which he generates his rankings. that's it. no dog whistle. not trying to create something where there is nothing
