Title: Depth Chart
Post by: wadesworld on April 15, 2020, 08:04:59 PM
1 - Carton, Symir
2 - Koby, Greg, Dexter
3 - Brendan, Cain
4 - Garcia, Osa
5 - Theo, Lewis

Mane would be the dream add but I’m not counting on it.

Add a guard that can knock down the 3 off the bench and either a backup 5 or best available sit transfer.

Comes down to whether Koby can perform better in a position off the ball.

Potrykus is writing the Marquette stories with Ben Steele out and dropped a note in the JS piece that if he doesn’t get a waiver, he may go pro.  It comes from a SI article

Consider the source. I’m sure that’s his wish.

Don't think Lewis will be a Theo backup. Per Stan he is as much as an offensive weapon as Markus. If you trust Stan's recruiting he won't be Theo's backup.

You can produce offense from the 5. Both Luke and Ellenson at times put up numbers from there. Physically, while I could see Garcia getting some time there, Lewis has the best frame to compete down low in the Big East when Theo isn't on the floor. That said...is Theo ready for 30 mpg? Because unless Wojo embraces some Creighton-style small ball, we're headed in that direction.

I think we'll be 5 out most of the time depending on matchup. All the nee guys can handle the ball for their size, nightmare to guard and all can shoot mid jumpers or outside

How I feel. I think Lewis is the second best option at the 5 on the roster in a Jae Crowder light role. I think Lewis will play some 4 next to Theo as well.

My very rough first impression (assuming a waiver for Carton):

1: Carton 25 Sy 15
2: Greg 20, Koby 10, Carton 5, Dexter 5
3: Cain 20, Koby 15, Bailey 5
4: Garcia 18, Bailey 17, Lewis 5
5: John 25, Garcia 10, Lewis 5
Redshirt: Oso

Totals:
30 Carton
28 Garcia
25 Koby
25 John
22 Bailey
20 Greg
20 Cain
15 Sy
10 Lewis
5 Dexter

Add Mane to this roster and we can really have some fun

Oso redshirt?  I don’t see it happening at all and think it would be a very bad idea

Oso better be part of our rotation from the word go. We’re not returning any all conference performers, some have been major disappointments.

I can’t imagine anything other than all three freshmen being counted on heavily.

Oso is a strong defender. Defense tends to translate. We will need his height if no grad transfer bigs come in

Can Oso stretch to the 3 as well?

I think if Koby is playing 25 plus on this team we are in trouble.

I don’t like the idea of Oso redshirting, but it will be interesting to see how Wojo uses the three freshman. It doesn’t sound like Lewis or Oso really have the ability to play on the perimeter (as a bigger 3/SF) as of now.

Lewis is a solid 3 point shooter and has a mid range game. Not much info on Oso but I don't think he has much range.

You do not bring a kid in from Arizona and not play him, I expect him to get 15-20 minutes a game, so will Lewis

If we have 11 scholarship players or more, Wojo will redshirt one of them (which I think is wise). Oso makes the most sense to me. Lots of potential but is skinnier than a hipster's jeans. I think he could use a year to bulk up. Plus Bailey, Cain, and Garcia are all likely above him on the depth chart. I'm not sure any other player redshirting makes sense.

At the expense of? There are only 200 minutes to go around. If we are expecting 15-20 minutes out of players ranked #81 (JL) and #111 (OI) then either they are lot better than their rankings (which is certainly possible) or we are a much worse team than I think (which I hope isn't true).

I agree with you, but I think it's understandable that someone could see Oso's 247sports rating of #61 and expect an immediate contributor.

I think Lewis and Garcia are more game ready, but if Oso has the lateral quickness to guard wings at 6'10 he could see minutes even if his offensive game isn't developed.

All three forwards should play as frosh and develop together, let them go and compete and see what happens in the normal progression

Exactly.  But come the start of the season, Wojo will have a pretty good indication of who is going to be able to legitimately contribute.  If he thinks Oso should redshirt at that time, he get's the benefit of the doubt about it.

We need the Marquette social media team to get a picture of the whiteboard of truth

I agree, there are only so many minutes to go around.  I highly doubt Stan and Wojo said come to MU and redshirt.  Kids come to play and he will unless he is not very
good.  I am not sold on Bailey, he was just OK at times, many times he disappeared, played soft.  Cain will get 10-15 minutes a game, he deserved it.  So if Oso is better than Bailey, he will get time there.  One thing about freshman, you never know what you get.  Is Garcia the man or is Lewis, or maybe Oso, it will play out in
practice.  At least with Carton, you can play Koby at the 2 exclusively, which will take the ball out of his hand.  Koby is a physical guard who can rebound and defend,
he should be much better now.  Now if Elliott can get stronger and be healthy, he can get more time, but his D at times was weak.  Competition for playing time will
be competitive which is good.  Best men play.

It currently says:

Mane (lock)

It's entirely probable that this has been mentioned in one of the hijacked threads and I missed it, but why do people expect Carton to get a waiver for immediate eligibility?  What's his reason for transfer and when will we find out if the waiver is granted?

Will have to appeal with the NCAA, but moving closer to home due to mental issues of some type.  Much like many kids around the country, ie. Heron of St. Johns.  Much
different than the Hausers and Potter.
