I'm actually surprised there's not many (any?) conspiracies that the Russians started this.
1) They have very few cases.
2) They have everything to gain by taking down China, Europe, and the US
Maybe they unleashed it in the manufacturing center of the world on purpose. This way they can rise again as a global power, and their "strong leader" will receive all the praise.

"A flurry of new national polls released this week reveals that while anxiety about the disease is rising on both sides of the partisan divide, Democrats consistently express much more concern about it than Republicans do, and they are much more likely to say they have changed their personal behavior as a result.
Government responses have followed these same tracks. With a few prominent exceptions, especially Ohio, states with Republican governors have been slower, or less likely, than those run by Democrats to impose restrictions on their residents. Until earlier this week, Donald Trump downplayed the disease's danger and overstated the extent to which the United States had "control" over it, as the conservative publication The Bulwark recently documented. Conservative media figures including Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity likewise insisted for weeks that the media and Democrats were exaggerating the danger as a means of weakening Trump. Several Republican elected officials encouraged their constituents to visit bars and restaurants precisely when federal public-health officials were urging the opposite."
"If the virus never becomes pervasive beyond big cities, that could reinforce the sense among many Republican voters and office-holders that the threat has been overstated. It could also fuel the kind of xenophobia that Trump and other GOP leaders, such as Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, have encouraged by labeling the disease the "Chinese virus" or the "Wuhan virus."

All of the above is true, but JFC!
Some of the craziest ones I've seen on either social media or overhearing conversations.
1. Deep state conspiracy, this is a ploy by the Obama people to take down Trump.
2. Released by Trump, long term plan to use martial law to take control of the government. Deaths amongst elderly Supreme Court allows him to stack the court to allow it.
3. Massive media hoax.
4. Released by the CIA in China to prove that domestic production needs to be kept at home, at to weaken Chinese power, but it got out of control.
5. Intentionally released by the Chinese, who had a vaccine (hence low infections), to take global economic control.
6. Aliens, well I haven't actually heard this one, but it is more rational than any of the ones above.

Can't believe this hasn't been brought up yet: Bill Gates quitting Microsoft to focus on ID 2020, which would get the 1.2 billion or so unidentified people in the world some form of working identity. Many feel that RFID microchipping via nanotechnology is the most efficient way to make this a reality. One way of implementing this and delivering an ID chip is a mandatory vaccination against SARS family viruses. The religious right sees this as Mark-of-the-beast stuff, and I'm not sure they're wrong. They claim that people will be effectively barred from participating in the world economy without taking the chip. You thought getting the sweater-vests to go cashless at FF was hard?! Would pay to see the Natl Guard pull into a rural Texas neighborhood with mandatory vaccination kits in hand as they knock on the door. It would make the 1990s Clinton-Reno ATF/ Branch Dravidian Waco stand-off look like a game of tiddlywinks.
At first blush, I don't see why getting people "some form of working identity" would be the top global priority for Gates (or anyone). What am I missing? Why is that particularly important?

The 5G conspiracy people are the kings of the tin foilers.
Russian based 5G conspiracies have been around for a while.
Been seeing some conspiracies out there that the whole COVID-19 pandemic has been engineered by Bill Gates. His global health initiative will soon come forward with a vaccine that's been secretly embedded with nanotechnology to track all of humanity.
I'll put this one in the Conspiracy Thread.
Welcome to the Trumpocalypse

I have read a LOT of scary shyte over the last couple of months, but this one takes the cake. Thanks for posting.
It doesn't belong in conspiracy theories, though. It is filled with facts, the biggest being that the administration is chock-full of folks looking forward to the End Times.

That article is aggressively presumptive and offensive. I know you're a loud and proud atheist, but you can't be stupid enough to believe that many Christians, bible thumping or otherwise, actively cheer for and breathlessly await the end of the world. Tossing in Israel policy as a sweetener was a nice touch.
Pretending thats anything other than a loose theory and actually totally factual is just agenda driven. There is a HUGE gap between "evangelical that believes in the Book of Revelation" and "actively looks forward to end times and make policy decisions to hasten it". The article takes politician pandering to be absolutely literal. The same people that say "Bernie isn't a communist, its just references" have no issue saying Pence is a David Koresh-level religious wackjob based on a few statements.
I think Pompeo and Pence have personal viewpoints that are extreme and obnoxious, but lets have some grain of salt here.

Wags, there has been a subset of evangelicals that have been up front about working toward the rapture for decades. I remember discussions about that when I was at MU in the 80's. I remember evangelicals that I worked with celebrating the invasion of Kuwait because it was the first step toward biblical Armageddon. I will grant that it is a small subset and a fringe group.

Oh I absolutely know and agree that they exist. And they are disconcerting. I just object to the idea that their ideology is widespread and commonly held or accepted in the "Christian right", much less driving the boat when it comes to policy and pandemic response.
Despite being a Christian and leaning a bit right of center, I have issues with the super conservative Christian right and think their viewpoints on LGBT issues, womens health, etc... are toxic and counter-productive, but I can recognize the difference between that and a theory that borders on a plotline from a horror movie.
I think we are relatively close on this one.

I actually am not a "loud and proud atheist." I am not ashamed of my atheism one iota because, for me, disbelief is more logical than faith in a supreme being. But I only bring it up on Scoop when a handful of folks here try to use it as an insult. Also, I didn't post the article in question.
As for the point you are making, no, I don't "believe that many Christians, bible thumping or otherwise, actively cheer for and breathlessly await the end of the world." Almost everybody I know identifies as a Christian, and I don't know that a single one of them has such a belief.
However, I do feel (and I think evidence supports) that this president -- who actually has referred to himself as "The Chosen One" -- HAS brought in just those kinds of extreme, dangerous people to serve as his top advisers. Many of them DO look forward to the End Times, and just about all of them actively hate the very groups you mentioned to tower.
Even those who, for some reason, don't think we need separation of church and state ... I hope they at least do believe we need separation of state from extreme, dangerous, bigoted people -- regardless of those people's faith or lack thereof.
I wish you good fortune.
Bunch of YouTube videos out there now of idiots visiting hospitals to "prove" they are really not that busy. In some they show how busy hospitals where in like, 2019, and comparing to now.
So all non-life threatening surgeries have been re-scheduled. Idiots who would normally show up to the hospital for nothing, are not showing up for fear of getting the virus. There are no family members/friends of patients milling about anymore. Many hospital office worker staff working from home.
It is sad that most of these videos are from Americans. A few Australians but mainly Americans.

Get this: I've seen a few videos on YouTube describing thousands of kidnapped children being freed from their underground cages over Easter Weekend where they were held for years (or decades) as sex slaves and to provide adrenochrome for the worldwide pedophile network. These underground tunnels are under Central Park, under the Denver Airport, and all over the world. The COVID-19 stay-at-home orders are in place so that the children can be freed without opposition and so no mass shootings can be false-flagged as a national distraction because no large groups are gathering anywhere. Once the children are freed, all of the pedos will be arrested, from Bill Gates to the Clintons, Bush, the Pope, and many Hollywood elites.
I did not make this up. But apparently some people actually believe it.

Quite scary.
And then, as the theory goes, after the arrests we will all be free to go on with our lives, because the whole virus thing is a big hoax in order to execute the plan.
If they were held for decades, they are no longer children. And it has been fairly clearly established that there is a lot whackadoodle out there.

Not only believe it, there are folks pushing this. Remember Pizzagate? This is part of that.
"Throughout October and November 2016, WikiLeaks had published John Podesta's emails. Proponents of the theory read the emails and alleged they contained code words for pedophilia and human trafficking.[2][13] Proponents also claimed that Comet Ping Pong was a meeting ground for Satanic ritual abuse.[14]
"The story was later posted on fake news websites, beginning with Your News Wire, which cited a 4chan post from earlier that year.[12] The Your News Wire article was subsequently spread by pro-Trump websites, including SubjectPolitics.com, which added the claim that the NYPD had raided Hillary Clinton's property.[12] The Conservative Daily Post ran a headline claiming the Federal Bureau of Investigation had confirmed the theory.[15]
The story was picked up by other fake-news websites like InfoWars, Planet Free Will,[10] and The Vigilant Citizen,[16][17] and was promoted by alt-right activists such as Mike Cernovich, Brittany Pettibone, and Jack Posobiec. <snip> Members of the Reddit community /r/The_Donald created the /r/pizzagate subreddit to further develop the conspiracy theory.
Some of Pizzagate's proponents, including David Seaman and Michael G. Flynn (Michael Flynn's son), have evolved the conspiracy into a broader government conspiracy called "Pedogate". According to this theory, a "satanic cabal of elites" of the New World Order operates international child sex trafficking rings.[27]"

While walking my dog every day, I witness people driving their car by themselves wearing a mask, or walking their dog in a quiet neighborhood wearing a mask, or taking out the trash bin wearing a mask.
Depends on your definition but I'd certainly categorize that at conspiracy theory-level (at least extreme disinformation & hysteria)... This is not The Happening, the virus is not just circulating with the breeze once you exit your house.
Not only that but cloth masks only provide about 3% protection from GETTING the virus... So even if it was circulating in your car as you drive alone, you'll be losing your sense of smell (or walking backwards?!) in a few days anyway.

Went for a walk in NYC the other day, along the Hudson. Low traffic, people are single file more or less, VERY easy to stay 10 feet from others, much less 6 feet, and I saw 2 separate people verbally chided for not wearing a mask by others. I was baffled.
Then again, we have people being pulled over for "non-essential driving" cause being alone or with a family member in a car is pumping the virus out into the ether I suppose. When you get large concern with an often uninformed populous, you get silly season in some ways. Both overly cautious and overly reckless

While you are correct about the silly behavior, in their defense they probably just put the mask on when they leave home and don't remove it until they return.
I want the person walking their dog to wear a mask. On more than one occasion, when I am out for my daily walk, someone else will turn a corner without taking a look first, or suddenly walk out of an alley without looking, and I might be right there. And sometimes they will make the turn and keep walking towards you even though they see you. Or they will come up from behind and pass me close by without either moving or giving warning so I can move.

Many people driving with a mask are going to the store. Better to have it on the whole time rather than forget to put it on when you get there.
Many people wear the mask to protect other people. Due to no worldwide testing, one may be asymptomatic.
I would never mock someone who is wearing a mask.

Although I wouldn't go this route. For those that are at risk, wearing the mask the entire time is the correct thing to do.
Mishandling of a mask, and/or improper technique of putting it on/taking it off are one of the common ways of being infected.

Also, major discovery is likely a significant overstatement. He was a computational scientist. That type of work rarely makes major breakthroughs, as it is all in silico, and purely theoretical.

I would go with certain "elements" in the government want more people to die from COVID, or for the epidemic to continue for control reasons or what have you.
Or China killed them because they don't want someone a cure yet. They want Trump to lose the election and have a more "China friendly" president in place.
Or maybe they were Chinese agents.

I made it longer, but not much. There is so much that is demonstrably false in that video. What an absolute lunatic.

YouTube/social media shouldn't be censoring things like this. Dangerous precedent. Everyone should have access to misinformation
You joke, but that guy is going to find some other site catering to whackadoodles to post it and they are all going to sit around and circle jerk each other about their versions of conspiracies and alternative facts. Better to have it out in the open.

Agree to disagree on that one. Misinformation that gets people killed has no place on the most widely viewed video platform on the internet. Better to have the true whackos have to hunt it down on a different place than where your mother might find cooking tips, and your child finds cartoons.
Simply having it on YouTube lends it an air of credibility.
I saw a great video of Alex Jones saying that after his food supply runs out in a couple of years, he and his family are going to start eating their neighbors.

LOL, he actually said he and his daughters would eat the neighbors but he never mentioned what his own son would get to eat.

I disagree with the premise of the title of the article. That is actually pretty normal for Alex Jones.

If that was just some other moronic source, I'd agree with you. But that is the source that a large segment of our population now deems most reliable, and that our Commander in Chief says is the real news.
They even get one of the few valuable seats in every press conference.
Being disruptive is more important than facts. Character revealed. But it is myopic to hide from that stupidity. Look it in the eye.

In the spirit of transparency, it would have been nice of 60 Minutes to provide this additional information. He may be right, but he is a heavy partisan. Donated to Hillary Clinton 13 times in two months - not in a year, but in two months. I would want my viewers to know that information for completeness. My wife and I often watch these things and ask what axe does he or she have to grind? Are they legitimate, is there some past history they aren't telling us that might change the tone of the story or at least require the viewer to pause about the credibility of the subject or their personal bias? This type of information should be disclosed to the public when highly partisan situations are reported. Start the segment with Dr. Daszak was a strong supporter of candidate Clinton, donating 13 times and has often been at odds with the President. Despite that, he says ____________________ Get it out of the way and don't open yourself up when the internet hounds start to type in names into political donation databases that only call into question your subject.

Science doesn't care who the scientist donated to. It has zero relevance to the science. Reporting that he donated to Hilary's campaign is about as relevant as to whether he prefers Arby's to Wendy's.
Actually, in my opinion the latter is far more relevant and important, as it goes to his ability to recognize quality.

Really? Been hearing the same thing about "mark of the beast" since credit cards came out.
As far as the Gates accusations? Every rich Lib is somehow behind the world's biggest evils according to these people. I'm surprised there wasn't a George Soros reference here.

Yeah if you believe in his "science" like the rest of the sheep!
This one rolls a whole bunch of existing insanities into one. COVID was developed by a group led by Bill Gates. To force you to get a vaccine with a chip. So they can track you and ultimately control you by the 5G towers. 'Some people say'
COVID-19 falsely linked to bacteria
https://www.factrakers.org/post/covid-19-falsely-linked-to-bacteria
"A tabloid and Facebook groups in the Philippines have been sharing a false claim that Italy's health ministry has discovered that COVID-19 is caused by bacteria—not a virus—supposedly amplified by 5G radiation.
The erroneous claim, which began circulating in the Philippines on May 24, also says medicines for pain, inflammation and blood clots, including aspirin and paracetamol, are enough to cure patients who purportedly die mainly of thrombosis or blood clotting."
BTW, unnatural carnal knowledge Facebook, which has made the intentional decision to look the other way and allow this and other divisive crap to circulate on their platform because it fills Fuckerberg's pockets.
By now everybody knows that COVID-19 was cooked up by Morning Joe and Crooked Hillary at the Comet Ping Pong pizzeria.
I mean ... Duh!
Not a COVID-19 conspiracy, but wow. At least this place won't be able to blame the lockdown when they go out of business.

They desperately need this conspiracy theory. His emperor is publicly (and racistly) calling it the Kung Flu. They need to somehow convince the very few independent voters who have not yet decided between the two candidates that evil China cooked up COVID in an evil lab to screw the noble truth-teller, President Pandemic.

Navarro in a normal time has an unhealthy focus on China. The funny thing is he is so focused he can't see that China likely prefers a Trump admin. Breaks up the international coalition allowing them to be more bold regionally and drives more countries into their arms beyond Asia.
