Title: [Cracked Sidewalks] Wee Morning Hours Update
Post by: brewcity77 on March 11, 2020, 01:33:13 AM
A few auto-bids punched last night, nothing of significance changes. If wins over the field matters (doesn't hurt, but doesn't feel too important) then Marquette was a beneficiary as non-con opponents North Dakota State and Robert Morris both claimed auto-bids.

I must admit it's pretty neat having two so called cupcakes as most would say made the big dance in North Dakota State and Robert Morris that were at Fiserv Forum.

4th NCAA trip since 2009 for Robert Morris

5th NCAA trip since 2009 for NDSU

If there's a MOP for this season it's Mike Broeker who put together a fantastic schedule.

Schedule was solid this year.  Just wish we'd start playing the 13 non-con games we're allowed to play.  No reason for us not to play one of UWM or Green Bay each season.

They can only wreck our season, almost never help.  And those two teams will always get way up for Marquette.  It's a challenge, but it's one that the program has shied away from.

Both were not very good this year, I will give you that.  Generally Green Bay is at least decent.

In any event, punting a non-con game remains extremely stupid, and I will die on that hill.  Hopefully now that we're going to 20 game conference seasons, Broeker is able to fill the schedule with 11 non-con games.

It's possible the marginal impact of a game like that is negative. Look at the Ellenson year where we played such a week schedule. We might have been better off playing 5 less games than all those 300+ teams.

Marquette took their maximum allotment this year. They didn't punt anything. They were not given a campus game by the Orlando Invitational so 12 became the maximum.

Would rather it be a Loyola Chicago or SLU than UWM or UWGB

Thanks for the clarification.  Any indication as to why we didn't get a "campus game" for the Orlando tourney?

4 of the participants did get that non-bracketed game with Fairfield playing at USC and Temple playing at Maryland.  Wonder why the others did not play non-bracketed campus games?

PS, brewcity has answered that now.

I believe it was scheduling. Orlando was contracted with certain teams and none were available on the days we had Fiserv access.

I did ask Broeker about that specifically during the off-season and remember he told me they tried but 12 was the maximum they could schedule for this year.
