I briefly thought the same thing because it is inevitable.  But, it would take away from the other Seniors and Markus would not want that to happen.  Many fans will also need to see post season success to really get behind it and/or gain some perspective regarding how great he was for MU with time.  Give it a few years and everyone will be behind it.

We are fortunate to have such an incredible young man as a representative of our university and basketball program.

I thank Wojo and Stan for bringing him to my alma mater.

Interesting point about stealing the oxygen at senior night.  That is going to happen anyway.

What I'm afraid of is the decision to have his number retired will be based on his NBA career?  That is a bad idea.

Wes Matthews did not have a distinguished MU career especially the first three years when he did not start.  He did better his senior year.  But he had a great NBA career so watch how people will stand in their head to argue I'm wrong and Wes was an all-time great. In other threads, some list him in the top 10 of MU players.

Conversely, Lazar Harward had a truly outstanding MU career.  He holds the record for games started and his combination of rebounds and points mean he should be considered to have his number reitre.  But he was a bust in the NBA so watch how people will stand on their head to argue he was not really that good.  Or that Wes was a better MU player than Lazar.

The decision is about what you did at MU, not after.

I understand your concern but he will have so many college accolades by the the time the season is over, including being a first team all American and multiple all time records for MU and the Big East that his accomplishments will not be overlooked based on professional career failures (if that is the case).  A banner is inevitable.  Everyone knows it.  Even the most ardent critics would reluctantly agree.

Huh?

Wes started every game his last three years. Is 10th all time in scoring. Won 94 games in his career, four NCAA tournaments.

Class act on and off the court.

We are very lucky to have him as the face of Marquette to many people throughout the country.

Doc Rivers would beg to differ.

As great as a career he has had thus far on the court, he continues to impress me with his off-the-court representation of himself, the program and the university.  For a current 20-year-old, he has simply been amazing.  Regardless of what his future holds, I know he will be successful in whatever pursuits he chooses.  Stand-up young man.

It will be a strong adjustment not having him on the court for Marquette next year and beyond.  Big shoes to fill for the the program moving forward.

We should all be thanking him.

I'm sure Markus wants to cap his wonderful career with a nice run in the Big Dance.

Go Markus!

Go Warriors!!

Never thought of that comparison before, but that is a great call.

Pretty impressive combo between what Markus has done on and off the court in his four years. He certainly appears to have made the most of his college years. What a great representative of Marquette, and we sure have been lucky to watch him develop over the years.

In a good way or bad way? To me, Russell Wilson seems kind of a scripted phony, Markus seems legit to me.

I was certainly thinking it was intended in a good way. I know people who went to Wilson's high school, a high level prep school, and he is revered there to this day. I've read and heard many stories that suggest he has remained grounded, sincere and an incredible leader since then.
