Blue would be better served to play in Overseas. In fact, it might help is NBA career aspirations out even more than the G league. Overseas game is a better place to hone his erratic shooting skills than G league (more stability)- much more money as well. Stephon Marbury is a legend in China - While Vander wants the NBA spotlight, perhaps the spotlight in a different country is awaiting him and will fill the void that he has..

I have been following Vander for some time. Was not aware of the fog machine incident, I think that really explains the downward trend in his play. Thought he was getting a decent chance with the Warriors but when the minutes stopped coming knew it was a matter of time before he got cut loose again.
Hoping he can find another g league team soon. I used to think Europe would be a good alternative for Vander , but they only play one game a week there and I think it would be hard for him to get any kind of rhythm going to build the momentum needed .
He should go to Europe to make money. He's not making the NBA.

Frustrating I am sure for him and for many MU fans. Still think he should have stayed and believe he would have been drafted....I wish him well and hope he catches that star.

Well, good chance your buddy Lars would have restricted him academically so why risk it?

Agreed. I was pretty upset when Vander left. I thought at the time, and still think, that it was a stupid decision. Selfishly, it was bad for us Marquette fans. His departure completely torpedoed the 13-14 season and the program hasn't been the same since. All that said, he's been through a lot, has paid his dues, and deserves a nice payday doing what he loves.

Another choice he made....got to put in the work...one is playing at a university. I wish him well.

Let's be honest with ourselves. Vander never showed he was an NBA caliber prospect while at Marquette. If you put Markus Howard's brain in his body, then you have an NBA all star. It's a shame you can't merge the two because neither can make it on his own.

Yep, he manned up and made a grown-up decision he felt was best for him and his family. You shouldn't second guess him leaving then with the extrajudicial rules imposed.
Still waiting for the NCAA to adopt the Larry Williams Rules he promised us, btw.
Big Vander Blue fan and pulling for him big time. Very impressed by his passion and dedication to chase his dream. I love people that dream big and chase their dreams.

He did that. He could have also stayed one more year, manned up where needed in the academic space and I suspect would have been one of 60 players drafted. We will never know. Lots of ways to man up. I wish him well.
Which Larry Williams rules did he promise the NCAA would adopt?
Please end this myth.
Staying in college does not better prepare you for the NBA. Old white man myth

What on earth does this have to do with race? Absolutely nothing. But let's look at some MU examples alone and how staying four years probably meant a NBA career.
Chris Crawford would have made the NBA from Marquette if he didn't go all four years...LOL.
Steve Novak? Unlikely.
Wesley Matthews....Unlikely.
Travis Diener. No way
Amal McCaskill. No way
Jim MacIlvaine. No way
We'll see about Markus.
Playing 4 years helped get some of our guys into the NBA because of what they did their senior seasons. They were borderline before that, or flat out had no chance.
Stop with the race crap.

about promise rules ncaa adopt Larry Williams. Any suggestions?
Let's be honest..... Vander is 27, has played in the G league extensively and still is inconsistent with his shot. Staying a 4th year wouldn't have helped him.

He likely would have been drafted, and once you are drafted then teams have skin in the game with you. They let you hang around longer, justify the expense of the draft pick taken. Of course there are no guarantees in life, but as shown to you there are many players at MU alone that a 4th year meant getting paid in the NBA.
Oh God.
Instead of talking about the linked article, Cheeks is bringing up THIS dumb argument for the hundredth time in the last five years.

Vander earned his way into the league through performance. The same way Buycks did. Buycks played more games because he had slightly more diversified game than Vander. At the end of the day neither could stick. Buycks has opted for taking the foreign route which works for him. Vander has said he will toil in obscurity and hope for another breakthrough. I will always root hard for a guy like that. Funny thing about Vander is that even in the G League, he plays to win. Interesting how the article pointed out that attitude has rubbed some people the wrong way.

I disagree. The draft in 2014 was much deeper than 2013. That's what factored into the decision to leave early for Blue. Only way Blue gets drafted is if he gets a shot. Still doesn't have one.....
It was never meant to be.

Interview I did with Draft Express back in 2013. They had him as a first rounder for 2014 if he stayed. It's what they do for a living, but yes they are wrong in prognostications.

Should he have stayed? Was he right to go? Nobody knows for sure.
But now that it's done, I am just happy to see the kid fighting and wish him the best.

The correct reaction any reasonable person should have for this young man chasing his dream against the odds. Jeez.
I have always been a Vander fan and wish him success.
I questioned his judgement when he left early and continue to question it. Soon he will realize that he could play 3-4 years overseas before he's too old, make a couple million, and end up set for life if he is reasonably frugal. I hope he does it. Problem is he's never even made it a full season overseas yet and the clock will run out on those opportunities at some point as well.
If his goal is 1-2 seasons or partial seasons at the end of an NBA bench, those spots don't go to 6'4" 27 year-olds unless they are able to play the point and make 3's.
Admire the hell out of Vander's persistence to achieve his dream. Sure hope he can return to the form he had prior to the fog machine accident, and fulfill his NBA dream.
Yet, also hope he doesn't hold onto it for too long, before the 7 figure opportunities dry up.
No one here is wishing him anything but success. There is some frustration, including held by his former head coach, at whether the dream he wanted could have been achieved through a different path, but everyone hopes he catches lightning in a bottle and makes it. Also hard not to argue with those that are looking at father time and wondering if making some money overseas isn't a smart play at this point. Tough call for a tough man who has had his share of tough breaks.
