Title: Zone
Post by: Matt Heldt The Milk Man on January 02, 2020, 01:52:02 PM
When a team comes out and shoots over 50 percent from the field, why not go zone. We clearly could not match up with creighton man to man. Blow-Jo had a big man in until it was too late. While it is logical to go big when the other team is undersized, it doesn't make sense when your big men cannot score and then are a liability on defense when going man to man against a five out five guard lineup. When Theo is guarding alexander on multiple possesions we had no chance. Plus when creighton is incredible in pushing the pace and transition why not slow them down by going zone.

Oh and by the way, what happened when we went zone in creighton 2 years ago when they had a similar shooting performance and we came back. ZONE

Whenever something works, wojo goes away from it. This goes back to posting up the Hausers last year on the blocks or even going zone or even just mixing it up occasionally.

I went to dave and busters for the talkshow last year and asked rob jedson the same question, "Why not go zone", his response was, "Wojo is from Duke so he has a duke pedigree and that he doesnt like to do that

The answer concerned me, when i saw duke going zone in the tournament last year. This was unbelivable that wojo cant mix it up occasionally. Maybe a hard press or trap, not our weak fullcourt trap occasionally. This could cause a lot of problems for teams with greg and jamal.

Overall, Wojo <Buzz

good when we ran it lol. Until the end when we stayed in it for the whole time. Maryland also has a bigman in jalen Smith. While this poster clearly resembles a classic scoop meltdown he has some points

Well as long as Markus wasn't one of the two guards up top.

I'm all for playing zone, especially when nothing else is working(Wojo just seems to have a blind spot to it) but it can only be deployed when Markus isn't on the floor. To a certain extent the match-up against Creighton was a mini-version of the season long dilemma when Rousey and Markus were playing together....do you maximize your offense at the expense of defense or vice versa.

The 2-3 zone needs to be in the bag for MU in a couple of the match-ups but it means taking Markus off the floor for it to be effective. Wojo maximizes Markus when he gets in a pickle.

Taking Markus off the floor is not an option.

Taking Markus off the floor is not an option.

It is on occasion, especially when he doesn't have it. Wojo defaults to optimizing offense over optimizing defense, don't think that's the right strategy all the time.
