Title: Orlando Invitational Tournament Thread
Post by: Herman Cain on November 23, 2019, 08:53:08 PM
Looking forward to the Orlando Invitational. There are some solid teams in the tournament. Would be great if we could make it to the final and face Buzz and TAMU.

Made this thread to discuss the various teams and games.

Here is the bracket:

We needed a near-miracle to beat Davidson last time. Don't know if this squad has demonstrated that it has the stuff. They are not a weak opponent. Hoping for the best.

Given how A&M is playing, I wouldn't count on them being in a final.  Decent chance they don't win any games.

Hope our guys can get to to the final. It'd be a good accomplishment to beat Davidson and USC. Wouldn't expect to beat #6 Maryland. Expecting 2 wins in any case. Beat KSU and the rest of the cupcakes and I'd say that's an acceptable Non-con.

The last time we were in this tournament we won two games when I was expecting no wins. One game Carlino scored over 30 points and the next Duane Wilson scored over 30 points.

I suspect we will not win any games in this tournament, if Howard does not put up 30+.

North Dakota State is not a cupcake in my book. Top 200 per KenPom. We should win at home but that could be a good game.

It had been over 20yrs since KO left and we'd surpassed his heights plus the program got major. Buzz would be different as he trashed the program and conference, and failed his last year.

O'Neill left trashing the program.   And there wasn't really that stark of a deference between major and mid major back then. In fact I'm not even sure the term "mid-major" existed.

The difference was O'Neill was a fun dude who had time for everyone. Buzz was a weirdo.

Outside of Fairfield, this whole field is in the Top 100 for T-rank.  Lose to Davidson, beat Fairfield and then play Harvard or A&M won't be a total killer for our resume.  Of course, beating Davidson, beating USC and playing Maryland will do wonders for the SOS.

Yes. And they would meet in the 7th/8th place game if both teams lost their first two games. Unless Fairfield gets a major upset in their first two games, the only way for TAMU to lose all their games would be to lose to Fairfield.

Agreed. I feel the exact same about this game vs Davidson as I felt going into last year's Louisville game.

Davidson has had a couple good games this season and a couple real stinkers. The latter surprised me, as they have a veteran team with several good players and an outstanding coach. If we get their best, it will be a VERY tough game. We are more athletic and should control the boards. I just hope we close out on their good shooters and take care of the basketball.

Per Kenpom, we have roughly equivalent offenses with Davidson, but our defense is miles better.

AdjO: Marquette 107.2 (33rd), Davidson 107.5 (30th)
AdjD: Marquette 89.8 (39th), Davidson 96.9 (123rd)

For comparisons sake, here are the AdjO and AdjD ranks for our other possible opponents:

USC: AdjO 48th, AdjD 77th
Fairfield: AdjO 290th, 245th
TAMU: Adj) 135th, AdjD 66th
Maryland: AdjO 9th, AdjD 37th
Harvard: AdjO 78th, AdjD 112th
Temple: AdjO 120th, AdjD 69th

One could say the same about last year's Louisville game. I, for one, happen to think it set the table for everything else that happened in the non-con part of the schedule, which in turn set the table for our 23-4 start.

Yes, I'd "choose" beating Nova if one asked, without context, "Who would you rather beat, Davidson or Villanova?" But losing to Davidson and then having to play Fairfield would put us in dubious NCAA position a month before we even get the chance to play Nova.

You're allowed to disagree. These are all only opinions.

The Marquette version of the 31s?  Mine have to be casual shoes now as the right baby toe side of the right shoe is ripping as a result of playing ball...I hope the players' versions have held up better, although they probably wear a newer pair every few games.

This team should not have a loss to Davidson putting us in a dubious position with the NCAA.  If that happens, the season is a failure regarding of whether or not we make the tournament.

It appears some people here may not keep up with some of the MU opponents out there. Davidson is legit. They are off to a bit of a a slow start but sleep on them at your own risk. They return most rotation players from a team that won 24 games last year and finished 2nd in the A-10. Taking them lightly would be a mistake. MU will if MU plays well. But let's have a healthy respect for capable opponents.

If we get into the S16 as a 12 seed, it would be a lot of fun.  But it would also mask a lot of the team's issues.

I have a pair of those and didn't like them for playing ball.  The grip wasn't good and they slid around too much.  I wore them outside for the first time a few weeks ago so they're officially casual shoes now.

Normally always the case on ESPN owned events. Worst case in some, it is online only. Not in Orlando.

Thursday:
Early games from Orlando (Temple/Maryland and A&M/Harvard) are Dave Feldman/Dan Dakich. Late games (USC/Fairfield and Davidson/Marquette) are Ted Emrich, Andy Kennedy.

OK everyone, here's the deal...  Thanksgiving dinner is at 5:30pm sharp tomorrow.   In order to fully watch and appreciate the game, I'm going to DVR it and watch it later.  Problem is, I can't help but to check scoop about 783 times an hour.

So here's the deal, I need everyone to stop posting once the game starts unless it is not basketball related (that should be easy for some of you).  I'll log in after I've watched the game to let you know that you can discuss it.

I appreciate your help on this.  Thanks everyone!

I, for one, don't go anywhere near Scoop once the game starts.

Sometimes I like to read the game threads later, especially in situations like the Purdue game, when we're down early and come back to win. All the usual suspects either proclaiming, by name, every player who sucks and will never be any good or seemingly celebrating an expected Wojo loss (or both). Then most of them mysteriously disappear after the win. It's pretty top-notch entertainment.

Obviously, the solution is to grow some stones and insist that dinner be either at 3:30 or 8:30.

We are having another couple over and they happen to be big Cowboys fans. Here in the Eastern time zone, that game starts at 4:30 and the MU game is at 6:30. I told them we are eating at 3:30 and they are welcome to stay as late as they want, but at 6:30 football is off and we're watching the Warriors. They will be leaving at halftime so they can go home to watch their 'Boys play the second half.

Regarding the bolded, in reality I do the same!  Too much negativity for me.  Even reading later can be depressing.

I'm curious now what most people are doing tomorrow.  I unfortunately have no choice, but are others changing their plans to watch the game?   Will you have to argue with family regarding football vs. MUBB?

Wellsstreet, I don't do blue or teal.  Anyone who doesn't understand my jokes for what they are sort of become the joke to me.    ;)

So is it Espn 2 or EspnU tomorrow?
I assume if USC will be Espn/2
If Fairfield the U?

It's not decided yet (presumably) because ESPN wants to see who is in the losers bracket of the battle 4 atlantis at the competing time slot. I'd guess if Michigan or UNC are in that game, it'll be on 2 and we'll get the U.  (Michigan currently winning their first game)

But on the plus side, the B4A bracket shows that game on ESPNU, so likely expect our game to be on 2... But not guaranteed.

That's a great top-end lineup with some quality mid-majors. Tough ask for Xavier, but they do return most of this year's team.

Seton Hall is the real deal. So far we are not in the same league. Reality will slowly set in or maybe a miracle will happen. It will take a miracle and if it does I will be the first to give Wojo a big fat raise.

Myles Powell is. Not convinced the rest of the team is.

What I've noticed is teams look like the real deal for stretches and then they don't look all that good for other stretches.

19 point lead down to 5 now for the Hall.

Powell is carrying them..... they will go as far as he can take them.

Lol.

Trying to extrapolate an entire season based on watching a half of basketball is usually a bad idea

Lots of big leads lost already this season.......no loss should surprise anyone.

Saw at least twice Powell go to ground after a missed layup. Surprised the game wasn't stopped for 15 minutes to check which Oregon player should be ejected.

If you were a betting man, put money on Howard scoring well over 30 against Davidson.
Hope you are right. This team directly needs Howard to break out of his offensive funk.

Sorry, it was supposed to be FFS. Also, deleting that part of the post so I dont contribute to the issues plaguing the board.

I need to take a break from here so I can just enjoy Marquette basketball on its own without all the stuff on this board dragging it down.

Happy Thanksgiving all. Go Marquette.

Ah. That makes sense. So does leaving this board today. I will be doing likewise shortly, resurfacing sometime after our win over Davidson.

Free From Crean (diversions).

How about Temple at half over MD? Tough seed but I expect MD to storm back.  They have been settling for threes.
