Chicago had a great idea when they were going to build a temporary stadium for the opening ceremonies and track and field events. I guess it wasn't enough of a grift for the IOC though. Same for FIFA and the World Cup.

I think Boston was planning the same, a lot of temporary stadiums that could be taken down after the Olympics.
They do it with swimming pools all the time for international events.
You can set up a world-class pool (in terms of speed) in a parking lot and take it down when the event is over.
