Longtime head coach Mike Nelson departed the program Aug. 12 to become the director of cross country and track and field at Monmouth University, a Division I school competing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Nelson had been head coach since 2007.
The announcement left MU without a coach with the start of the season fewer than three weeks away.
Bill Scholl promoted volunteer assistant coach Sean Birren to interim head coach Aug. 14. Birren coached at Division II Lindenwood University prior to joining Nelson's staff in 2012.

Not a great look
Wouldn't Wojo look good prowling the sidelines for Monmouth, hey?

Maybe we should just trade Wojo for the Monmouth coach King Rice. He's doing a bang-up job.

I mean it's cross country. 99.9% of Marquette and Monmouth fans/alums/students/faculty don't even know this happened.

This was a promotion. Nelson was the head cross country coach and assistant track and field coach at MU. (Bert Rogers is the head coach) At Monmouth, Nelson will be head coach for both.

You aren't wrong. But still not a great look.

Actually to the MAAC. But I don't think you understand some of the dynamics here. He likely got a nice raise and is now the head of the entire track and field program.
This is no different than Brett Nelson leaving to be the head coach at Holy Cross.

Maybe 100% don't even know there is a team.

East Coast elite, hey?
Someone is going to blame this on Wojo.
Hard to keep coaches when deep pocket alumni from "just win, baby" schools like Monmouth come a'poachin'.
