Yeah of all the crap in these threads I think we can have an OT thread on the Volleyball team

Especially when it's good news on a slow Labor Day weekend.
So glad this was posted here as I would have missed it!
We've been rocking a volleyball thread in the superbar for quite a few years now.
Marquette volleyball is really good. Most consistent team at MU over the past decade and coming off a S16 appearance last year.
Marquette will be on national tv, this Thursday at Wisconsin on FS1.
The board is called Hangin' at the Al. MU volleyball plays at the Al.
Works for me. And congratulations to the ladies!

Unfortunately my fear is it might go the other way Thursday. Last year's match at Marquette got very ugly the second and third sets, but Marquette is better this year than they were last year so they could at least compete this year. Hoping for the best, but Wisconsin volleyball has been on a completely different level than Marquette. Marquette has been moving the right direction for the last decade or so though.

In the Boise St. game, the team was mediocre...yet they still swept—a sign of a very good team. Against a highly ranked BYU, they dominated, especially in the serve...and I think they started to find their block game.
With Lines, MU may have three AA candidates. But, Wisconsin is so dominating at the nets. In the end, a big week for MUVB, but great to see this team do well. Lots of upside from a fan perspective.

Ok I don't know if you all were bashing on this idea, but I was trying to suggest a compromise between "Hanging at the AL is only for men's hoops" and "it's nice to hear about the sports teams at MU sometimes.
Too bad that the volleyball game on Thursday is up against Bears Packers. I'll try to check in during commercials.
Get the two tv set up. Or stream it on a laptop or phone.
MU women's soccer took down Michigan yesterday after losing in OT earlier this week to Wisconsin

There is NOTHING about "men" in this forum's description. You are being sexist. Shame!
11th in rankings. Highest in program history.
Marquette host Syracuse on Saturday and #17 Baylor on Sunday.

Currently on FS1 vs Bucky
Repeat of last year. Control most of set one but bleed it away down the stretch. Sets 2 and 3 got ugly last year. Hopefully that's not a repeat.
Lines is small in person. She's going to get exposed by bigger right side blocks.
And Barber needs to stay tall and hit high hands. She could tool the block every swing, she's stronger than any block against her, but she loves to pull the ball down into the middle of the giant block.
MU is a good setter away from a legit Final Four contender.
Libero is the best player in the match on either side. Very impressive. 8 does a nice job defensively as well.
Nice, not a sweep
I was at the game for sets 1 and 2. Was the call legit that MU challenged?

Huge challenge. Serving for the set.
Wow. 2-2. This is fun.
Going to set 5! Nice comeback for Marquette.
Better than the football game. 😬
Cannot believe we won that challenge. Our serving at clutch moments has been awful, but the defense fantastic. Why to scrap ladies. Let's do this!
Rooting against that Haggerty girl feels wrong but right

Incredible effort. Not only to force a fifth, but to expend all that energy and rattle off an 8-1 run to take control.
That fourth set was really exciting. I don't think I could have handled another close set in the 5th.

That 4th set was so nerve wracking and then the 5th set was kind of anti climactic but that was fine by me :). They showed some great resilience tonight. What awesome back to back victories on the road versus top 10 teams. I'll have to see if I can get down to the Al this weekend - this looks like it's going to be a fun season...

Good news though between Bond and Ryan, it shows potential coaches that you can indeed win at Marquette.
Was sitting dead center of the UW guest pass section with all the team's parents. Oops. Reverse sweeps are sweet.
Even sweeter when it's against Becky.
Wow. So lesson learned, setting the DVR for an extra half hour was not enough. Saw the first three and most of the fourth (to a UW match point) before it shut off. Checked Anonymous Eagle for the final. Early on, reminded me of last year in that they have great hitters but are weak on blockers. Man did they overcome that, however. Wish I'd seem it all, but great result.

Haven't basketball games that were aired on FS1 originally ended up online at some point? Maybe this match can be found online?

Not even close. I learned that a long time ago. I set it for an extra hour, but when I saw how the match was going (I started watching at about 10:00 EST) I changed it to two hours just in case. I've missed the end of more than one good volleyball match.
And, sadly, therein lies one of the key reasons that live volleyball will never be popular with the networks. A match might be a quick 3-set blowout that is over in 80 minutes, or it might be a fantastic 5-set battle that lasts three hours. It is really difficult to effectively plan. They need to have plenty of filler for the quick matches, but there is also a significant risk that the telecast will go long.

That was a fantastic volleyball match...just really gripping to watch. Marquette is really, really good this year. I hope they can keep playing at this level. Konovodoff is just outstanding and a joy to watch.
I really hope Marquette can go 28-2 in the regular season this year. ;)
Martha is a very good libero. My son (also a libero) is friends with her....she plays that position well. Spark plug.
Marquette might jump a lot in the rankings...but they still have to beat Syracuse and Baylor at home this weekend. I have no idea what Syracuse lost from last season but they made it to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament last year so they're no pushover, and Baylor has played UCLA (not as strong this year as they are historically but still UCLA), Creighton (they only other good Big East program), and Syracuse (last night in Madison) and smoked all 3 of those teams 3-0. This is still a tough weekend for Marquette. I will be very interested to see how Baylor does at Wisconsin tonight, particularly since they had an easy sweep earlier in the day while Wisconsin played a grinder of a 5 setter late into last night.
Great effort by the women! Incredible performance

WHY IS THIS IN THE DAMN AL FORUM?
(Twins game had ended -- great throw by Eddie to win it!... football game was horrid.. I put it on during the 5th set [that's what it's called, yes?]... quite enjoyable to watch tbh... go MU)
Baylor beat Wisconsin last night 3-1. Marquette and Baylor should be a great game on Sunday.
Was a little worried about a trap game with Syracuse today knowing Baylor is coming up tomorrow. So far MU is taking care of business.
Baylor is a tough matchup for Marquette. The game plan has to be serve tough. Baylor's weakness was passing but their pins terminate much better than Wisconsin's.

Very nice, thought they'd probably only move up about one spot. A couple tricky games left in the job conference and I'd expect a loss to Illinois but other than that MU should rack up a bunch of wins.

Uhm, ok....
Marquette just won an epic match with UCF. Took the first two sets 29-27 and 27-25, then UCF came back to win set three 25-23 and set four 25-19. The Knights took an 11-3 lead in the fourth before a 4-0 run to get close and 6-0 run to win the match 16-14. UCF was receiving votes in the poll, so another quality win.
Never have seen a team score the last 6 points to win when facing match point in he 5th......
Didn't think MU played well until the very end.......but somehow pulled it out anyway.
Amazing
Big opportunity for Marquette tonight. Illinois has a ton of injuries right now and is 2-4, with their only wins coming both against Tennessee. They also had to play this morning, losing to UCF son 4. They started the year ranked in the top 5 and if they get healthy they'll make some noise in the Big 10, so a win over them could look a lot better by the end of the season than it might look tonight.
MU won first set against #14 Illinois 27-25
MU wins second set 25-12
IL wins third set 25-22
IL wins fourth set 25-21
MU loses set 3 and 4
Rerun of last night.....hope it turns out the same but all momentum is with Illini
Reverse sweep....MU loses in 5th. Totally fell apart.
Really played poorly after blowing them out in set 2
Huge missed opportunity

Up 7 to 5 in 5th, thought we were up 8 to 5, but challenge reversal made it 7 to 6. Illinois went on a 7 to 2 run if I recall....final nails in the coffin.
Ladies pull out a 5 set comeback win at Illinois state.......down 2-1 they blow them out in the 4th.....take a 14-9 lead in the 5th......gag away the lead......face multiple match points against.....and solehow pull it out 21-19.......
Take care of business at home and they'll have a real shot to get one of the top 4 seeds in the NCAA Tournament. They aren't a top 4 team in the country but if you go into the Tournament with only 4 losses in a schedule that included Illinois, at Wisconsin, at BYU, Baylor, Syracuse, and quality mid majors like UCF, UWGB, Illinois State, and Northern Iowa you have a case you doubt.
Northern Iowa and UWGB are a couple more teams similar to Illinois State and UCF. No cakewalks.

Wow. Stanford just won at #1 Nebraska.
Crazy match tonight against Northern Iowa as Marquette drops the first set 25-20, and wins the second set 25-22 and prevails in a close 3rd set 28-26. So then I'm expecting a close 4th set. But Marquette just ran away from UNI from the get go and were up 9-0 to start the set and won the set 25-6 - wow!
Baylor honestly deserves to be ranked number one in next week's rankings. I don't think (though I'm getting less and less confident) they're the best team in the country but they've played at number 9 Wisconsin, at number 8 Marquette, neutral vs. a solid Syracuse, "neutral" (in Lincoln) against number 15 Creighton, neutral vs. an okay UCLA team, and hosted number 17 Missouri and number 13 Hawaii and have dropped a total of 2 sets all year.
