Which would then make you wonder if Stan would at all be a candidate there
I never felt this was a good hire, and always figured it'd be short-lived. I'd feel the same way if MU hired Doc Rivers. Did anyone really think that a guy who's as used to the glitz and glamour of the NBA as Mullin was would be into attending AAU tournaments and sucking up to helicopter parents 12 months a year? The same thing will happen with Ewing. It takes a special kind of crazy to be a college basketball lifer.
Guy, Stan left Bobby pdq to come to Marquette. I doubt BH has warm fuzzies about that. Stan was a Herb Sendak hire at Arizona State and had a cup of coffee in Tempe before booking after Herb was fired.

Agree on Mullin, felt the same way about Drexler.
However, i think Doc would have been different, not today but 10-15 years ago i think he would have been terrific. Very personable nni tjink kids n patents woukd have loved him.
I also think Ewing will be fine, he has a chip on his shoulder. Mullin n clyde had nothing to prove n quickky burned out, the fire burns strong in Ewing.

I think the poster meant Stan to ASU to be head coach, not follow Hurley to St. John's
I think that'd be a giant step for Stan. Great if he gets it but that's a reach
Would that make ASU a mid major since they hired a career assistant?
Who at St John's watched that abomination of a play in game and thought "man, we gotta get that other guy!"
This is 100% going to be Rick Pitino.
Well their new AD is from Duke, so I think it's safe to say the choice will likely be a former Dukie. Saw John Scheyer's name floated if Hurley says no

Johnny Dawkins? St Johns has the Vitamin Water guy to pay a coach's salary, money won't be much of an issue.

Why does everyone keep thinking Stan would be a candidate for every mid-tier top 10 conference coaching job. There's not a good enough track record here for even Wojo to excite any fan base.

You can bet dollars to donuts Stan will apply if the job becomes available. You do know he was an assistant at ASU, right?? I don't think he's ready for a job like that, but schools make strange hires sometimes, especially if they used to work their as an assistant. You see it quite often actually.

It would be like Marquette hiring Isaac Chew when Wojo leaves. I mean anything's possible but it is highly unlikely.

Mike Repole's a big SJU contributor, no doubt....but he's more Thirsty, my friends, on finding a Derby winner (He ran StayThirsty on the road to the Roses a few years ago). He would've had that winner in Uncle Mo if the horse had stayed sound.

Gotta remember to use the teal
This is ultimately a good thing for their program and the conference. Mullin appeared disinterested and apparently was never big into the recruiting aspects of being a college coach. Would not be surprised if he gets an NBA executive role in some capacity.
If St. John's is able to grab Bobby Hurley, it would be a great PR win for the Big East. For a change, the league would be stealing coaches away from other power conferences and not vice versa (Buzz, Holtmann, Mack).

Agreed. Hurley would be a really great acquisition for STJ. I don't love that we'd have to play that sort of team, but it'd be a really good coup for the conference.
Cherokee Parks and his sister
would love to get beat by a good st. john's team for a change....seriously...the BEAST needs Gtown and St. John's to be real programs.
Yes, St. John's superstar coach is stepping down.
Apparently they are looking at Rick Pitino and Bobby Hurley. Watch out, both great coaches. Baggage or not they can coach.

Pitino would be perfect at St. John's.
A lot easier to hate him than Mullin, that's for sure!!
Isn't this the Rick Pitino famous for his use of hookers and pay for play as part of the recruiting process? The one who got fired because of an FBI investigation? Yep, just what the Big East needs. This would lower the recruiting standard to that of the refereeing.
Fingers crossed Rick gets the gig. Puts a tad more glitz on the BE.
Why would Bobby come to STJ? less money..worse facilities..

I didn't use teal for a reason when I posted this yesterday.
There's no way Hurley takes that job.
St John's needs needs a solid coach otherwise they are in a world of hurt and will bring down the Big East brand.
Per ESPN STORY,
——
The coach who replaces Mullin will have a roster in flux. Leading scorer Shamorie Ponds turned pro after the season ended, and Marvin Clark was a senior. The Red Storm's top recruit, highly touted junior college point guard Cam Mack, recently requested his release from the school, and four-star junior Nate Tabor decommitted Monday night. There are no 2019 or 2020 prospects currently committed to St. John's.
Meanwhile, St. John's redshirt junior Justin Simon plans to enter the NBA draft and sign with an agent, sources told ESPN. Simon was one of the best defenders in the country, and would have been a top returnee for the next coach. Additionally, sophomore guard Bryan Trimble Jr. has entered his name into the transfer portal, sources told ESPN.
—-
If all of that holds, they lose 5/13 of their roster and 1 recruit with nothing in pipeline. They could end up with 8 scholarship players. They will have Heron and Figueroa in addition to three transfers. Simon could still come back but if they don't go big they are not looking pretty.
I'd like to see Mitch Richmond in the HC role. It's OK if St. Johns is borderline respectable and not dominant, it'd be nice to go to NYC and get a few wins over the next 3-4 years. He's been an assistant there for 3 years and is definitely a guy I'd listen to as a recruiter.

Looks like they are zeroing in on Tim Cluess anyway. Louisville just got a notification letter from the NCAA, so it's smart that SJU stays away from Pitino.
I think the only reason Pitino didn't get a show-cause was because he "retired." I'm not sure the NCAA would allow him to coach again.

Cluess is a hell of a coach. 6 NCAA tournaments and 2 NIT's with Iona. Has never won fewer than 11 games in conference play, 4 regular season MAAC titles. Not a sexy hire but a very good one, if that's the direction they go.

SJU administration had zero interest in Pitino.
Which shows more sense than I gave them credit for.
Mullins tried to hire Mike Rice a few years ago as an assistant, and SJU said no. If they said no to Mike, they were easily going to say no to Pitino.

Good thing no one cares about the Iona program or else their mailbox would be full of letters.
Things are getting ugly at St. John's. Here's their top minutes getters last season:
Shamorie Ponds: 35.1 mpg (going pro)
Justin Simon: 32.9 mpg (going pro)
LJ Figueroa: 32.0 mpg (transferring)
Mustapha Heron: 31.7 mpg (staying for now)
Marvin Clark II: 30.0 mpg (graduated)
Mikey Dixon: 17.4 mpg (transferred midseason)
Bryan Trimble Jr: 16.2 mpg (transferring)
In addition Nate Tabor their one incoming freshman and Cameron Mack their top incoming JUCO both decommitted.

Yeah they'll be worse than DePaul next year
Man, the bottom of the league is going to be awful next year, and I think that will ultimately help the Conference get more bids as a whole. DePaul loses their top three scorers, and I'm fully in "I'll believe it when I see it" from their incoming Freshman. Whomever gets that StJ job will be starting from scratch. I'm still not convinced that Butler or Jordan are any good, they aren't losing a lot but I also saw very little from what they did have this year. If those three teams combine to only beat each other, the top half of the league could be looking pretty good.
