Title: Marquette Food
Post by: NavinRJohnson on January 26, 2008, 09:40:59 AM
Need a little refresher on some of the more popular food places/items at MU over the years...

Real Chili obviously.
Wales on Wells cheddar fries and double cheddar burgers also immediately come to mind. After that they all start to run together.

The Dogg Haus on the corner of 17th and Wells has pretty good Vienna beef hot dogs. Speaking of Real Chili, got some last night...delicious!

otherwise there's always Jimmy Johns on Wells by campus and any number of places on Water including Buffalo Wild Wings.

Marquette Gyros.  Good greasy food.  Though imo, for some reason Oakland Gyros on UWM's campus is better.

George Webb, another place you never go for dinner but stumble in to at 2 am.

Angelo's.  Especially popular among freshmen.

Ziggy's.  People either love it or want to call the health department on them.

Honestly, outside Chili and Sobelman's there is nothing special on campus.

Webb's, Jimmy John's, Cousin's, and Subway are all there. Nothing great.

Marquette Gyros and Ziggy's are ridiculously overpriced. Food is mediocre at best. Ziggy actually has the better Gyro.

China Garden, don't bother. Everyone orders Chopstix from the Eastside.

Going off campus is the best bet for some good food.

No one mentioned the McDonald's on 25th and Wisconsin.  Mmm.  Just a block from West, I remember $2.05 would get you two cheeseburgers and a small fry.  1988 dollars, of course.

That McDonald's is so poor in quality, even in McDonald's standards.

If we are talking about that far out what about the Golden Chicken across the the US Bank on 26th?
Michael's Family Restaurant?
The Taco Bell is pretty solid.
KFC on 27th and Michigan closed.
Wendy's on 27th and State is always a experience.
No Burger King's near campus. Sad.

Golden Chicken.  Now that was a scary place.  You could get your chicken and pick up a prostitute all in one go.

How about the Arthur Treatures Fish & Chips on 27th?  Hah.

Wow, dod this not go the way I was hoping it would. Jimmy John's? Cousins? McDonalds? Maybe I didn't phrase it correctly. Frankly< I give a rip what's there today, because there is nothing there worth mentioning. I am more interested in what was there - what was good back in the day.

Anyone else ever get the feeling you are the oldest person who comes here?

Hilltopper, I heard there was a dorm @ 27th and Wisconsin, I don't mean to make you feel old, but when was that? Was it as unbecoming of a college campus as it is now? I can hardly  believe that now, I always joked how they should put a freshmen dorm @ 27th and wisc. b/c it would give them character and they would learn the area, but i wasn't serious.
Title: Re: Marquette Food
Post by: mu_hilltopper on January 26, 2008, 11:42:21 PM
Yup.  It was called simply "West Hall" because it was so far west.  It was a former hotel, with a pool on the rooftop.  It really wasn't a bad dorm, decent rooms, a bunch of giant quad rooms, nice ballroom, study rooms, decent cafe.  They stopped putting kids there in the mid-90s and tore the building down 3-4 years ago.

There was a shuttle bus that ran every 20 minutes down Wisconsin .. honestly, the commute to West was easier than any other dorm.  Just had to time the bus right, and it'd drop you anywhere between 12th-16th in a matter of minutes.

The neighborhood was crappy, no doubt.  There were frequent prostitutes hanging right across the street.  But there was a tight community aura at West, since we were so far off campus.

My wife (who lived at West) and I still marvel at the fact that MU chose to put 18-20 year old girls in that place at a time when the crime at/around MU was as bad as it has ever been.

Nothing can top the chimichanga's at Amigos.  They had the best sour cream on the face of the planet.  I think they laced it with some of the cocaine that there were running out of the back.

I still miss Super China. Such a great buffet.

Also Jose's up on Kilbourn (?) and 20th - home of the burita! I loved how he named them each burita after a team in the NFC Central. So good.

Ham 'n Egger
Suburpia (one across from the Gym and one by Schroeder)
Cousins (before being franchised)
Chile Gene's (Real Chili knock-off by the Lanche.  I think the Wales on Wells guy owned it)
Irish Baker (?) on Wisconsin east of the Marquette interchange--served a meal on a baked potato.
Wasn't there a Shakey's Pizza around 20th and Wisconsin
What was the name of the breakfast place in the Valley? Served an omelet called the "Kitchen Sink"

I am SHOCKED and AMAZED that nobody has brought up the BEST pizza place EVER!  I think it was called Gullianos, (and someone correct me if I'm wrong!), and it was on Wells between 16th and 17th, on the same side as Amigos.  To this day I miss the pizza there.  They had great sauce, nice and spicy, and really fresh crust.  We never ordered pizza from anywhere else, and they were quick to give you a beer no matter what age you were (circa 1987).  We went there a lot because of this our freshman year.  I have to agree - some other good ones were Wales (I worked there for a while), Amigos (not my favorite food, but the women loved it- more than enough reason to visit), the diner on what, 23rd & Wisconsin (someone mentioned the name and I forget it offhand).  And what about IHOP?  That was a great place to get breakfast at all hours of the day.  I remember reading a story at one time about a huge guy that walked in and stole the cash register - just tore it right out of the counter!

Saz's in Miller Valley

Leon's over on 27th(?)

Grebe's bakery (used to be across from the Gesu). Loved them cheese danishes. I tried finding one when I went back. Did they go out of business?

The Annex. Ah, no.

Pizza Joe's. DAMN good wings. Then became Pizza Pi's or something like that.

Philly Cheesesteak Shop. People didn't like it...I loved it.

That short-lived barbecue joint in Campustown. One of the best bbq sauces and smoked ribs. I still can taste it in my mouth. Their red beans and pork, too.

There's still one around.  They had stores in South Milwaukee and downtown but I think both of those are gone.  But the main one in West Allis is still there.  Plus they sell their stuff at Sentry, Piggly Wiggly and other grocery stores, and I think I've even seen it gas stations.

I had the same issue with Burger King... but I found one just a lil farther away. There is one on 35th a couple blocks north of highland.

Also a new favorite of mine that I recently found is the Philly Way... its on 2nd and Florida so you won't want to walk it but it has the best cheesesteak I have ever had outside of Philly

Guilianis was great - not so much for the pizza, but b/c you could get a 24 inch pizza for about $10.  It seemed that a couple of guys would get one every night at my floor at Schroeder and then throw the greasy cardboards the pizza came on like frisbees threw the dorm.
I mourn for Chicago's - those were great burgers.  I must have liked Marquette Gyros more than anyone else.

1. Oakland Gyros uses better lamb meat for their sandwiches. I always thought that the gyro meat at Marquette Gyros was always overdone.

2. Angelo's was the only place that served minors. That's why it was so popular with the frosh. You could have yourself a pitcher and a $1 basket of fries.

3. Ziggie's....How the hell has that place not been shut down yet. I can't believe people ate there after watching him smoke his pipe while cooking your food at the same time. As Cleveland Brown would say..."That's nasty!"

Completely agree with Philly Way. Dude actually gets his bread shipped in from Philly.

I do miss Taste of Philly that was on campus. Their sandwiches were pretty damn good. One thing that I am glad that is gone is Blimpy. That place sucked. Except for the Blimpy Bear that would show up at games. I remember my friends and I scaring Joe Chapman during one of his recruiting visits when a friend of mine stumbled up to him with the Blimpy Bear to get a picture. Too bad I had my finger over the lens. Stupid Admiral Nelson.

I've been down to that Burger King, it has been marginal, and the distance just makes it almost a non-factor.

Philly Way though eh? 2nd and Florida? I'm assuming down in the Third Ward? Try anything other than a Cheesesteak?

Definitely Louis D's.  Good chicken sandwich.  Guili's was the best, greasiest pizza ever.  Remember my first week as a freshman, drunk at Guili's and counted out at Angelo's.  Ah, the good ol' days minus a wife and two boys.

Taco Bell on 23rd ish was ok when I lived there, but the bullet proof drive through window was a bit alarming.

Louis D's moved down near grand ave mall I think after they tore everything down.  Didn't survive.  Wasn't the same.

Pretty sure they didn't move.  The owner was offered the space that was Vibe music when MU decided to tear the building down, they even offered him a fairly low rent but he didn't want to relocate anywhere, so he retired and moved out of state.  Too bad, they still had the best cheese fries anywhere.

Oakland Gyros is far superior to Marquette Gyros.

I'll agree that Oakland Gyros has better meat than Marquette Gyro's, but it stops there. Oakland Gyro's is delicious, but the environment at our Gyro's can not be touched. People smoking everywhere, drunk employees, shouting and shoving matches, Janet stepping into potential fights and laying down the law, Gus sitting back and laughing about everything.....absolutely wonderful. Any place where it's possible for a drunk kid to wake up the next morning in the bathroom because nobody checked when they locked up, well that's a place for me.

Besides that, the food is more than good enough.

They offered Louie the old Taste of Philly space, but MU gave him the runaround a bit when it came to discussing specifics, so he bailed.

Louie now owns and operates Niko's Gyros, at the Elston/Western/Diversey intersection in Chicago.

Yeah, I've tried the gyros there, but not since 4 years ago... a buddy of mine walked into my room at Schroeder one morning when I was particularly hung over, saw me writhing in pain, and nuked a gyro left over from the night before in my microwave.  Never again.

i have a story, but it didn't have quite so much to do with WHERE I woke up, but what had happened (that I had little recollection of). It had to do with me discovering I fell into the tub and whacked my head on the wall in my shower, taking out a 3X3 portion of tiles. Damage- $343. No brain damage.

I heard Sal's is like $3 a slice?!  I hope everyone is smart enough to stock up on frozen pizzas that cost less than that, for an entire pizza, and pull one out of the freezer when drunk and hungry.

The over-charging at some of these campus locations is insane.  I swear Open Pantry is owned by the devil himself.

Remember Wales on Wells?  Great burgers, fries and onion rings?

Also, the Zantigo?  We used to see Jerry Taft, anchor from channel 12 go through the drive through and get a couple bags of food and eat it all by himself in the parking lot.

Also, the West Dorm was  nice.  I never lived there, but had some classmates who did.  We lived in a building behind the Boeckl bldg, now known as 2040 lofts.  The neighborhood was fine and we used to walk  home at midnight from the old library.  Never had a problem.  The kids in West could not walk past 23rd street without getting harassed by the locals.

Campus looks much better now, and the fringe neighborhoods seem better, too.

Here's my take of on campus pizza:
Angelo's: the thin crust pizza is gross cuz its sooooooo greasy that the pizza just falls apart, you gotta get reg. crust, which is good.
papa john's: eh, its o.k., its sort of like dorm food though, you never know what you're going to get. the $5 on tuesday is a good deal though, as well as the $7.50 deal for larges for students.
sal's: mb overpriced, but much better than papa john's, i've had it once but it was amazing. they also have what looks like a dinner roll, but is garlic bread and its really good
but the king of them all? JACK'S. even though it's overpriced @ OP ($2.79 a pizza, they used to have a 2/$4.50 deal, now its 2/$5.50) Ok, so maybe its not the king, but its definitely better than PJ's or angelo's.
peace

By the way, has anybody on here eaten at Gyros more than 10 times in one week, or more than six days in a row?  Those are my personal bests

You are not going to have a colon when you are 35.  dang, boy.

Hahah... I credit my rapid metabolism with keeping me in Marquette Gyros and out of gastric bypass surgery.

Also, keep in mind that at the time I set the "record", it was either Gyros, Jimmy Johns (which I quickly tired of), or the O'D cafeteria.  How many grilled cheese sandwiches can a man eat in one year?

I remember when Wales on Wells started to deliver and we used to order just shakes/malts in some futile attempt to address a hangover.

It is down near the third ward, I always go with the cheesesteak. The menu isnt exactly large but Ive heard that some of their other stuff is pretty good too.

Had a cheesesteak today, extremely good.

Sounds damn good right now.

Just reread the 3 pages...

Glad no one mentioned Pizza Sh*ttle.

Man, that stuff was good the next day and they had good deals for the dormheads.

That place sucks. And the pizza is terrible the next day - all dried out and tough.

There wings give you the worst freaking gas in the world.

The bosco sticks are nice but I just by them from Sysco now instead.

I brought some real chili into work today for lunch.... best decision ever! So good.

Sals pizza is really good. I agree it is overprices.

MVIALE------ AngeBLows is still there, making some of the best pizza in the city (second to Zaffiros on farwell).

Did someone say wings???

Points East Pub, on the eastside, near Pick n' Save has the best wings I've tasted in my life.  Fried...soaked in hot sauce for 10 minutes...then grilled.  Awesome!

They used to have 10 cent wings and $3 pitchers on Thursday nights.  You could walk out full and hammered for $10.

Is that hooters still open down on Wisconsin Ave.  Say what you will about the IQ level of the servers, the price of the beer, and questionable clinetele that goes there multiple times a week.

The wings are awesome.

That Hooters is long gone. There's a TJ Maxx in that spot now. The only real non-fast food highlight of the mall is Applebee's now.

BW3's on water is probably the best bet for wings downtown.

Not a chance. Points East are light years better than BBC.

I was referring to "BW3", as in Buffalo Wild Wings. Not a big fan of BBC's wings. Points East's are phenomenal, but last time I was there, I think they only make them on Thursdays. Since the demand is so high, there's usually a multi-hour wait for your wings. They're 40 cents now, by the way.

Total brain fart - I meant BW3's as well. But Points East is still light years ahead. I just BW3's are overrated. The best wings on the East Side right now are Lives. Sounds odd but they are pretty good. Better than BBC. I had Wingz on Sunday at a Super Bowl party and they were pretty good as well.

On a personal note - I really miss WOW on Farwell.

Inflation is a killer.  Can't believe Point's East wings are 40cents on Thursday's now.  I'm not a crusty-old-sweater-vest-wearer either.  I'm talking late 90's they were 10cents.

Even at 40cents and 2 hours wait...they are worth it.

Anyone know what ever happened to Jose's Mexican Fiesta?  The place was at 24th and Wells. Jose lived upstaira and the restuarant was in the downstairs of his house.  Served the massive Burrita.  I always went with the Viking.

I think Marquette may have actually owned the building and it was leveled shortly after it closed in 2000 or 2001.  We haven'te been able to find out whatever happened to Jose since.

Can't forget about the Burrita challenge. If you beat the record each semester, you got your meal for free. The other prizes were either a trip outside to ralph off of Jose's porch, or Montezuma's revenge during the Limo ride back to campus. I think the all time record was like 8 or 8.5/ Anyone know where Jose went?

I loved heading across the bridge to Botana's or La Perla.  Still some of the best mexican food I've had in any city.  You don't get cheated on the margaritas either.

I know this isn't a restaurant, but used to go to Usinger's on 3rd & State and buy food for the week off their second's table.  Pastrami for .99/lb, chorizo sausage for 1.99/lb.  My best was getting a 7 lb bag of summer sausage for $5.  Took me and three roommates a week to finish.  If you're still at school, definately worth the trip.
