Title: KenPom After Providence
Post by: TallTitan34 on February 23, 2019, 03:22:42 PM
The win bumped us from 25 to 23 in KenPom passing Mississippi State and Villanova.

The win also changed our predicted conference record from 14-4 to 15-3. Villanova is predicted to have a record of 14-4.

Marquette also rose to the number one defense in the Big East and remained as the number two offense behind Villanova.

I should also note they now have the 19th best offense and 41st best defensive overall per KenPom.

all good news titan-thanks for this

don't mean to pee on anyone's parade, but we still have to play the games-the turnovers drive me nuts!  not all of them as every team makes mistakes, but the stupid, unforced ones.  in order to give ourselves the best chance, especially against the upper echelon(we're so very close) we've got to play as mistake free as possible.  some teams just have a little more room for error

This is why I ignore stuff like KenPom.

I knew we were better than 25th before the game, you knew we were better than 25th before the game...but it took this (hardly shocking) win to turn on the lightbulb in Ken's computers.

Yeah its flawed nonsense sometimes. This team being 25 is laughable. Clearly at least a top 15ish team

But that's what everyone should have** known almost a year ago...

I wouldn't ignore it.  I mean it's accurate to the point where Vegas lines are usually within a point or two of what KenPom predicts.

But yes, I agree that it should be used along with the eye test.  No one system is full proof.

All year it's seemed like our offense has been worse than past years, and to an extent it has been. We're 19th this year compared to 12th and 8th the past two years. Our 3P% is currently up to 5th in the country. 39.9% as a team.

Rowsey loss?

Rowsey loss?

Yes. But I failed miserably to make the point I was trying to make. We started the year pretty poorly on offense but we have been clicking lately and we're still a top 20 offense despite the early struggles. Very impressed with this team at both ends.

Sounds like this was the most important game of the season.  Changed our outlook from a split BE title to an outright BE title.

Weird.

Rowsey loss?

For sure. Teams can focus more on Howard and Sam now. But the benefits to defense outweigh it.

Also of note: #1 conference eFG% (offense & defense), #1 3 point shooting in contact (by 3.1%!)

#18 eFG% defense in the nation, up from #292 (!!!) last year

We are very nearly dead even with Mississippi State. Went from 25 to 23 ahead of them, then results elsewhere swapped us again and had us at 24 & Miss St at 23, now we flipped again based on another set of results. We both had an Adjusted EM listed at 19.57 (which has again changed...).

If you actually look at the raw totals instead of the ranking, the difference between us and #14 is minimal. #1-13 in the KP rankings are where things really start to separate (perhaps typical for KP, I don't know).

Just figured it was worth pointing this out so that we don't get too far into the "KP sucks because it says we're 24th" stuff.

You were absolutely all over it.  Your late night hoops prediction was spot on.  Great job.

FWIW - KenPom's preseason projections had MU finishing at 19-11 overall and 10-8 in the BE.
