I know comments are scattered in the game thread and others, but I was encouraged by the contributions of both of these guys last night. Ed with some nice inside moves and big boards (6 pts, 6 rebs and a block in 13 minutes), and especially JC with some solid D and great passing (5 assists, 2 steals and 0 TO in 19 minutes).
As we move into March, we will likely need contributions from one or both and last night bodes well....
Thought they both played really well. Joe looked much more sure of himself to me.
Ed was erratic on defense. Hence Matt subbing in for him. Ed worked harder after that and was a contributor on both ends. Joe played well. 5 assists, 0 turnovers in 19 minutes. Hauser the younger was not good.

To my eye (maybe advanced stats will prove otherwise), Ed is always erratic on defense. However, I thought last night he was the first player to match STJ's intensity and was a critical factor in getting the comeback going. You could see he was really fired up on a couple of those rebounds and I thought his attitude spread to the rest of the team.
Agree with above. Joe looked confident and Ed played hard but in control making lay-ups he has bounced off the backboard in the past. We very much need both of them playing well. Play solid and two or three good plays from each in a game will be the difference. All players on this team contribute and the fans appreciate their contribution. They both have a chance to be something special and make this team very special.

When Joey is forced to guard guards on the perimeter....bad things happen. Same with Ed and Theo. When you have two rosters that are as mismatched as SJU and Marquette, the team that wins is the one that makes the other pay for being mismatched on defense. In the first half it was them, in the second half it was us. Unfortunately they made us pay a little more.
We are seeing the same thing.

IIRC, Joe also had a couple nice passes that did not count as assists because others missed open shots. I was really happy to see Joe play well last night.

We have trouble with them because they control Markus with their guards length and athleticism. Most teams get them back by scoring inside, forcing interior help and opening things up on the perimeter. We don't do that. So they negate to a degree what we do best, and we don't make them pay for exploiting what they don't do well.
